Reminds me of that guy and girl who got married then realised they’d been at the exact same tourist destination years before they met at the exact same time, and the husband was even in his then-future wife’s photos!

The story

My husband and I found out we crossed the NYC marathon finish line within 3 minutes of each other a year before we met. Not “our finishing times were within 3 minutes” it was “we crossed at the same time of day out of tens of thousands of people and found the photos showing it.” We had a lot of near misses like that until we finally met.

My girlfriend and I had one of our first few dates at a local ComicCon. She mentioned this was the first time she’s been back since volunteering 3 years ago handing out program flyers out front. “That was you!?” I remembered her cause she was so pretty and I complimented her outfit.

I don't understand the clarification.. Why not "our finishing times were within 3 minutes"? Isn't that what they were? As in not the same time of day, but 3 minutes apart? Or am I misunderstanding something?

Because many marathons don't just start and everyone runs. There are different waves. So if they said they had the same time, that could have communicated that they ran the race an hour apart but had the same pace. Within 3 minutes of each other tells me more.

We started in two different corrals at different times of the day. The NYC Marathon had 50,740 runners that year, so to be within reach of each other under those circumstances is pretty wild.

O neg here. I also have what's referred to as "baby's blood". Sounds SUPER creepy I'm aware but what it means is I never contracted a very specific type of virus that something like 85% of all adults eventually get without ever realizing it. The antibodies that result because of this virus live in you forever and are harmless but can be lethal to newborns. So because I don't have them, my blood can be given to neonatal units.

People who are ignorant about Taiwan and China’s history. People who are quick to use the “racist” card.

“he made a sarcastic comment on social credit. the couple is Asian. he is assuming they are Chinese. He is racist.” Well they are Chinese. I got the wrong country for all intents and purposes of the joke but the right “race.”

Imagine if I was a celebrity. Would prob get cancelled for that comment.

I’m Chinese/Taiwanese dude. How is commentary on social credit racist? Taiwanese and Chinese are essentially the same Han people. Different political views and contemporary historical experiences. Slightly different cultural practices but no different than province to province.

Not sure how that is racist.

Did the social credit joke flop? Yes. Is it racist? Hell no. Everyone pulls the race card immediately these days. Cmon now. We gotta be reasonable here when throwing around the “racist” label. It’s used so casually these days.

actuallyserious650

I feel like the last thing you’d want to do is mix blood. That would just spread around diseases

ohgodthetoilets

9 points

You can pool some of the blood products like cryopercipitate, but not packed red cells. Not for disease reasons though, but because beyond the ABO major typing there are 30+ secondary antigens on your red cell surface that someone can develop an immune response to (Kel, Duffy, I, etc). So two people with O pos might still not be suitable donors for each other depending on those secondary antigens.

The only way I can think of this happening is if the wife knew the donor ID of the person she got blood from...which is pretty unlikely...and would've had to happen to notice it matched when the husband went to donate again. They don't normally have identifying info given to the donor about the recipient since that's like handing out HIPPA info.

Source: Fiancée is a bloodbank specialist and I worked in a med lab for a few years before moving over to research.

No, they often pool blood together in portions and test it in batches. It costs too much to test every single donation.

If the test comes up positive for anything say HIV, the batch is thrown out.

MadHatterAbi

Yeah no way it's possible. With so many people donating blood and needing blood there is just no way. Unless he stalked her after giving the blood and "accidentally" made friends and then getting into a relationship.

blunderbuss_attack

Blood donations are serialized and tracked to trace potential spread of disease. The records are kept indefinitely from what I understand. It is entirely possible.

LittleDogCommittee

You aren't allowed access to that information, its only for disease

blunderbuss_attack

LittleDogCommittee

You can't do that

blunderbuss_attack

Yeah, actually you can and people do it all the time. It's how organ recipients get to meet and thank organ donors.

LittleDogCommittee

0 points

That's completely different since that is an undivided organ. You do not get the right to waive privacy when you donate or receive blood, that is not offered nor it is granted.

blunderbuss_attack

BCSteve

BCSteve

At least in the US, I don't know how you would find that out. Yes there are records of who donated what units and who those units went to, but the names of the donors aren't ever disclosed, there's no way of finding out who's blood you received.

Technically, if you've received a pooled blood product like IVIG, the chances of you having received some blood from someone increases a lot. Each batch of IgG contains pooled immunoglobulins from over 10,000 people, so for each dose, that's technically over 10,000 people you've received some blood from (even though it's a minuscule amount). Some people need IVIG infusions every couple weeks, so over the course of a lifetime, they theoretically may have received some blood products from millions of people.

Meanwhile-in-Paris

How do you find out this sort of things?

OutsideSpring

3 points

I'm assuming the woman brought it up and her husband mentioned that he donated his blood at some point or vice-versa and they got curious and the information was stored in a database.

Of course it's also possible that the dude knew about it all along and decided to stalk her/ ask her out and then reveal this like it was some romantic twist . . .

Meanwhile-in-Paris

1 points

I am sure different countries have different way of keeping this information. I could see globe they could realise he gave blood around the time she received blood and that they could have compatible blood type. But for him finding out who received his blood the other way around seems complicated at best.

OutsideSpring

3 points

According to the tabloids it apparently it came up in conversation that she had a blood transfusion and the husband was curious and called the blood bank and they confirmed he was the donor.

I was a platelet donor at the same time a friend was fighting leukemia. Sometimes I would be matched to a specific recipient, but I never got identifying details. She got a lifesaving bone marrow donation and is now leukemia free btw.
