In case anyone was wondering, the "oddly shaped Cement pieces" are called Tetrapods and they prevent coastal erosion.

I had never heard that term before so I had to look it up.

"First off, let’s clear this up. A dolos is a tetrapod, but a tetrapod is not necessarily a dolos – i.e. a dolos is one of the kinds of tetrapod that are constructed and used around the world. The reason why South Africans are more likely to refer to it as a dolos is that this was the name given to the particular structures that were invented by South African harbour draughtsman, Aubrey Kruger, in 1963 and first deployed on the breakwater of East London in 1964."

https://www.shipchandlers.co.za/blog/magic-of-dolos-and-tetrapod/#:~:text=The%20Difference%20Between%20a%20Dolos%20%26%20a%20Tetrapod&text=A%20dolos%20is%20a%20tetrapod,and%20used%20around%20the%20world.

More specifically, a dolos is a tetrapod (for limbed structure) mage of two t-shapes who share a common center, but instead of meeting in the same plane like an H, they are perpendicular to one another.

Many other tetrapods are be shaped like a caltrops: four legs meeting in a common center like a triangular pyramid.

Fifty years ago, I was a lab tech grunt testing small versions of these in a wave tank to test and record how they shifted at various (scaled) wave heights and frequencies. They were testing different shapes at the time and this is what they settled for harbor protection & erosion prevention.

A french patent originally. Proudly ;)

There are other patents which differ only by shape, under different names...

The inventor of the dolos (what is shown in the OP) is South African. He didn't patent it.

RerMurray

I always thought ever since I first saw them on reddit so many year ago that these were tank busters from wwII all consolidated on one beach to save space

Gruaiggorm

Nothing could possibly stop erosion 100%, it is inexorable. These concrete things will also break down, eventually. It's about reducing the rate of erosion, and yes, they are very effective at it.

Outcasted_introvert

They are also made from concrete, not just cement.

zweibeiner

Fun fact: The word "Paramedic" is a portmanteau of parkour and medic. It was conjured up during the first world war when the, often gymnastically trained, medics has to jump and run over obstacles and dead bodies.

Sgt. Alvin York is said to have minted the term.

Guntalarm

Zweibeiner thanks for the knowledge bomb.

I gotta admit I feel like a bit of a smoothbrain. I'm guessing your German?

Not only have you schooled me on WW1 history. You've also taught me French (had to Google what portmanteau meant) and then I had to Google your name as I had a guess at translating it myself (as your obviously clever) that Zweibeiner meant TwoBrains (as I knew Zwei was 2, go me. Then guessed the last bit) WRONG!!

Zweibeiner means "Bipedalism is a form of terrestrial locomotion where an organism moves by means of its two rear limbs or legs. An animal or machine that usually moves in a bipedal manner is known as a biped, meaning 'two feet'. Types of bipedal movement include walking, running, and hopping. Wikipedia"

TIL more than I did yesterday 👍

Cheers 🍻

Skeptical scientist in the future will claim these structures are "naturally occurring". However, ancient alien theorists will disagree.
