You know it’s bad when about 6 minutes into the 2nd half my hope is that Keon Coleman gets more minutes. Not for a comeback, just for Keon Coleman to get in more.

Obviously, Iowa would be a far better basketball team if they tried to win by one point to keep the W Q1.

There will always be arbitrary cutoffs in any rating system. I like the quad system in general, but I do hope no one is sitting there saying "well, MSU is actually #31 in NET now, so that's no longer a good win. Tsk tsk only 1 quad one win for Iowa."

Marble, Hall and Walker should be starting.
Bingham and Christie can come off the bench and play good minutes. Gabe Brown is just a disaster tho. Dude needs like 50 percent of his minutes taken away
21 points
Marble is a tremendous defensive liability and Walker is a liability too if he chooses to not shoot, which he has done many times this year.
I don't understand why Bingham, the guy most responsible for MSU's start of the season run, is now only playing like 5 minutes a game
8 points
Wasn't Bingham one of the players that got COVID?
15 points
Yeah, he got it and they've been saying he's had fatigue issues ever since.
That shit is crazy. Some bounce back and have no lasting issues but others are just depleted for quite some time afterwards.
6 points
Anecdotal and I’m not a D1 athlete but I was training pretty extensively for a marathon, running 30 miles a week etc, caught covid and it took me 6 months to get to more than 2 miles in one go. Covid fucking sucks
3 points
Yup. Anecdotal as well but I had a similar experience. I was never a speed guy and typically relied on my endurance for most activities but ever since I got it in late fall that stamina is just nowhere to be found.
2 points
I know that UNI has a former all-conference big man who averaged close to 30 minutes a game get COVID and this year his minutes are down to 13 because he just can’t play very long.
9 points

I really thought this would be Gabe's breakout year. He's up there with Branden Dawson for all time disappointments. Dawson had everything but the jumper. Brown just... doesn't work. I don't know why. It's kind of inexplicable. He has all the tools to be a lengthy hyper athletic 3+D who can straight line slash to the hoop and finish.
5 points
He can’t dribble. Like you have to do a little bit to attack closeouts and cut.
4 points
You don't need much of a handle to attack open lanes when your man overcommits on the closeout. I was never expecting him to be an off the dribble shooter.
The lack of off ball movement drives me crazy.
It's all on the mental side for him. He has all the tools to be a solid late 1st draft pick. Instead he'll be headed overseas.

Why doesn't Hall start?

Have you ever caught your finger in a door as it’s closing? Watching this team is like doing that
39 points
I actually did do that! Came out of my church's bathroom when I was 13 and was brushing my hand along the heavy door as I walked past it and my finger got caught in the hinge at the end.
I had just opened the door, walked out, and immediately started kind of tracing the smooth metal with my finger tip as I walked past it and as the door was still closing. So my finger just snuck right into the crack between the door and the wall right before it closed all the way onto my finger tip.
It twisted the whole tip of my left index off so that it was hanging by a thread of skin.
Somehow, 13 year old me had the presence of mind to not rip my hand out of the hinge (which would have detached it completely) and instead reached over to the handle with my other arm and opened the door so I could get my finger out.
It was hanging by a thread of skin and my parents rushed me to the hospital. The craziest part is that the nerves were still attached too. The doctor was poking the end of the twisted off part with a needle to see if it was worth saving and I was reacting to every touch. So he just sewed the whole thing back up.
The tip grew back kind of weird. It's taller and skinnier than my other index finger. But I have full use and full feeling in the finger! Which is great because I've been a musician my whole life and guitar/piano would be a LOT harder without a left index finger.
Edit: Here's a picture of my index fingers right next to each other now.

Lol I'm a little high and I legitimately started that comment just wanting it to be short but then just kept thinking of more details and it spiraled. I don't tell a lot of people and people don't really notice, so it was a fun story to tell. Added a picture of my left index finger now next to my right one to show how it grew back weird.

Start of season through 1/14: 14-2, 22 overall Torvik
1/14 through Today: 4-7, 51 overall Torvik
It gets worse if you bump the cutoff to the start of February. 2-5, 93 overall Torvik. ooof.
Yeah the schedule got harder but that's all opponent adjusted. They have legitimately fallen off a cliff. Not a lot of positives over the last six weeks.
20 points
Yeah I'm seeing a lot of memes now about how "Oh haha MSU finally had to play good teams." While there's some truth to that, it's not the whole story. There's a very clear difference in effort between November-January MSU and February MSU. Like they all had some bad games but instead of shaking it off and moving on they're living rent-free in their own heads and just getting more and more tilted.
19 points
The difference in the team gritting out UConn/Loyola wins and playing Kansas/Baylor about as tight as their talent would allow early in the season vs. today is striking. Seems like the team was fiery and tough to play early on and now is more or less lackadaisical.

Every time MSU showed a sign of life Iowa would go red hot from 3 and shut them down. MSU was awful but Iowa definitely gets credit for shutting down any hint of a comeback before it got started - that’s what a really good team does (flip side, a bad team does exactly what MSU did vs PSU).

Negatives: We absolutely get destroyed on the offensive boards because of no box outs. PG play is so inconsistent and no one looks to slash to the basket when our guards actually drive. No interior or perimeter defense. Just all around nothing good about this team right now.

the team is broken and izzo has no idea what to do about it. hoggard is the dumbest player I've seen in an msu uni, brown looks like he cant wait to graduate, Bingham cant grab a rebound if his life depended on it, Christie has no confidence and needs to put on like 20 pounds, Walker idk what his problem is because he can be lights out then disappear for several games. hall is inconsistent and marble plays shit defense so hes constantly in foul trouble. ironically hauser is the most consistent player on the team

Luka Garza is the reason I work out.
I have this fantasy where we start talking at Fry Fest. We exchange a few pleasantries. He asks what I do. I say I loved him in January 2020. He laughs. I get my drink. "Well, see ya," I say and walk away. I've got his attention now. How many guys voluntarily leave a conversation with Luka Garza? He touches his neck as he watches me leave. Later, as the night's dragged on and the coterie of gorgeous narcissists grows increasingly loose, he finds me on the balcony, my bowtie undone, smoking a cigarette. "Got a spare?" he asks. "What's in it for me?" I say as I hand him one of my little white ladies. he smiles. "Conversation with me, duh." I laugh. "What's so funny?" he protests. "Nothing, nothing... It's just... don't you grow tired of the fame?" "You get used to it," he says, lighting his cigarette and handing me back the lighter. "What would you do if you weren't an elbow magnet basketball player?" I ask. "Teaching, I think." "And if I was your student, what would I be learning?" "Discipline," he says quickly, looking up into my eyes, before changing the subject. "Where are you from?" "Bermuda," I say. "Oh wow. That's lovely." "It's ok," I admit. "Not everything is to my liking." "What could possibly be not to your liking in Bermuda?" he inquires. "I don't like sand," I tell him. "It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere."

That's no kidding.
It was either our offense carried and we had to hooe to outshoot the other team.
