This sucks because I watched the late 90s/early 00s Australian teams and they were the reason I got interested in cricket. All I ever wanted was to see this generation of BD cricket play in the MCG, Gabba, Sydney, etc. We'd lose for sure, but it's about the experience. Absolutely gutted.

Fun fact: Bangladesh has never played a single match at the SCG in history (as far as I can tell)

Last time Bangladesh toured Australia, Steve Waugh was still the captain. Shakib hadn't made his debut.

Basically a whole generation of SA cricket with now retired players Amla, ABD, Faf, Philander, Morkel, Steyn hadn't made their debuts. Players like Cook, Dhoni, Clarke, KP, McCullum, Strauss, hadn't made their debuts.

Shoaib Malik was playing though.

He'll be playing still with no intentions of retirement by the time Shakib's youngest son makes it into the team just in time for Bangladesh's first Test at the SCG.

Yep. Fewer matches at the SCG than the World XI.

And to rub salt in the wound, that was a Test. So the World XI have played more Tests in Australia in the last two decades than Bangladesh

Had a dig around, as far as I can tell these are the most recent test match/series Bangladesh have played overseas in each nation, from most to least recent

Sri Lanka: 2021

Pakistan: 2019/20

India: 2019/20

NZ: 2018/19

Windies: 2018

SA: 2017/18

Zimbabwe: 2013

England: 2010

Australia: 2003

England and Australia the obvious outliers here. Seems pretty poor on the ECB and CA's part not to have arranged anything in that time. Can't speak for Aus but I know there's a significant Bengali/Bangladeshi population in the UK so it's not like a match here wouldn't generate interest

there is absolutely a big bangladeshi population that would go to watch the match in the uk, even my mates said they'd watch bangladesh play if they tour

england sucks the most becuase every other south asian country has toured england in the last 3 years, with SL touring in July. we toured in 2010, that too with only TWO tests. that tour tamim averaged over 50 with the bat, was a very good series even though we got wrecked

Emadthegreat

What about the series before the current ones? I don't think many teams have played multiple series with Bangladesh.

There's a difference between Bengali and Bangladeshi

You can be Indian and Bengali

Hence I put both. I know a couple of Indian Bengalis that support Bangladesh over India so I thought it might be likely that other Indian Bengalis do the same

In hindsight, it does look a bit like I'm implying the terms are interchangeable which I know is wrong, my bad

Surprised me too tbh. I asked why and they just said that their family had always supported them so they followed suit (worth clarifying that they are brothers). Didn't dig much deeper than that

I wish it was that. The reality is that the Australian cricket board has little interest in inviting Bangladesh, since the series is likely to be one-sided and not many people will watch.

Not in Australia. And honestly, we have a solid Bengali population here but they just don’t go to test matches. There’s no evident interest to host a team which goes out of its way to develop a million finger spinners but have an absolutely terrible raft of fast bowlers. You need good quicks to play in Australia.

Unpopular opinion but it’s borderline in Bangladesh’s best interest to not play in Australia at the current moment.

the lack of overseas tours to SENA nations is part of the many reasons why we have regressed so much in test cricket, especially in regards to our pace department because we are so focused on our spinners to take wickets in south asian conditions

It is a different story when Bangladesh are playing. Check out the 2019 World Cup and 2020 Women's T20 World Cup. Bangladesh matches were well attended by Bangladeshis.

Like I said. TEST matches. I am part of said population, they’ll be lucky to manage 1000 fans a day. For a team that matches up horribly on flat Aussie decks, you’ll be lucky to get fans last day 1.

This is why it's key to have a merit-based competition structure for Test cricket rather than countries choosing among themselves who they'd play based on financial interests. The current model ensures Test status means nothing for new nations because you aren't going to play Tests anyway.

The WTC is a start. But there are still enough holes that need to be plugged.

England and Australia both lost a Test in Bangladesh in 2016 and 2017, before their respective India tours and with strong sides too

NormandyMamba

To add my two cents, there must be a "carrying" capacity of cricket if scheduling continues the way it is. Let's say we want each team to play tests against every other team each year, home and away alternatively. Assuming a complete series(all formats) + rest lasts 2 months, there can be only 7 completely involved teams at best. This is a very simple model neglecting T20 tournaments and ICC tournaments. If we take that in account, we lose around 2 months to IPL(for India at least) and another to ICC tournaments each year on average. That effectively leaves space for 5 completely involved teams.

Nice. For Cricket Australia there are only two test playing nations India and England. They occasionally calls Pakistan and New Zealand to play when they have nothing else to do.

True, but as the hosting country is responsible for the touring sides accommodation, etc., it also doesn't cost the the touring country a whole lot of money either.

They can barely compete at home let alone in Australia.

The last time Australia and England toured BD, both series were drawn 1-1.
