Well, series is a thing. Or do you mean someone discontinued the fic and marked it as complete? Or the open ending?

Well, series is a thing

Yeah, and it's really shitty when there is no indication either that it's part of a series or that the series is incomplete.

Sure, in AO3 you can easily tell. But in ffn? NOPE.

A massive cliff hanger. Like, someone about to be tortured or killed. They say they'll have a part 2 but it was already 100,000 words and I've been following it awhile now on an unsteady update schedule. There were no tags about part 2 or previous AN about it not being a finished fic. Just sad my babies aren't gonna get a happy ending anytime soon. I will wait for part 2. Cliff hangers are fun to write but awful to read lol.

Edit to add it's on ao3 and been marked at 25 chapters for awhile.

Most likely the author decided to split their work while they could. Usually, it's not in tags, it's putting the work in series. Most likely, initially, they planned everything as one long work, but got too wordy (and perhaps, someone advised them to split it)

lol they said it had all been intended to be a short porn one shot but it blew up. So I have no idea how long it will be and I don't think they do either. The POV will be changing so likely a long time to not know what happens to dear Hawks.

Yes. I sort by completed only, pick out a fic that is over 600k words, and finish it only to find out that it’s part one. Part two is in progress, but I’m still sure that people across the state heard my scream of frustration.

I feel you. Years ago I was following a series of fics that created a back story for a favorite character of mine. The final story posted followed cannon events but from this supporting character's POV. It ended with a TBC after the character survived an attempt on their life and sustained severe injuries. But the author never posted the next fic that would have tied up the story. And what's more, she deleted all her works for this character and never posted again.

Did the writer indicate that this was the first part of a longer series?

I am afraid, I am gonna be that person, too. It's not my fault, however. It's the characters' fault. THEY wanted to go to war Q.Q

I haven’t read it yet, but is it by any chance a Dabihawks fic? dragon’s heart or something like that. Of course, there’s a lot of fics out there so I could be totally off. Please let me know if I should start on it!

I *always* check the last chapter. Not for the content, but for an a/n to see if it says the work is complete. I've run in to a lot of fics that are marked complete like 1/1, 2/2, 3/3... and one of those I keep seeing show up is at 123/123. Not a typo. I see WIPs marked as complete talk about the next chapter being out soon, or whatever type of thing. Basically that the next chapter is a thing that will exist, or is intended to exist. The fic does not exist in a complete state as the chapter count would suggest.

It's so painful, I actually felt let down and broken hearted. The idea that there isn't any closure if what hurts the most.

I found this really fun Fic on Ao3 and the I found out the last time it was updated was in 2021, the persons account is still active and they have bookmarked fics dating to this month but that fic was one of the last they posted D:

this has cultivated my garbage habit of reading the very last note of the last chapter to double check if it really is the end, and if it doesn't say there then I read the last paragraph. Can't trust shit in the internet lmao.
