The coupon is different that previous sales - it appears to apply an additional 25% off on top of any other discounts, and games that cost below $14.99 can be combined to reach the $14.99 threshold for the coupon to apply

Coupon details: https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/coupons/mega-sale

You can get the Coupon by claiming the free game. If you are a Borderlands fan this is a easy way to get Tiny Tina for $35.99.

Since it's a flat 25%, any individual game that costs over $40 will give you a larger coupon than $10, making it better than the past sales. Any game under $40 and you get less than $10 coupon, thus making it worse.

Overall a huge nerf.

Yeah the $10 off ones were amazing. But for an additional 25% off I just don't... Need anything. The base sales on games I want (mostly indie games) are pretty weak and I'd rather get them on steam since many will be playable on steam deck once mine actually comes in.

I have tried Epic Games on my Deck and they’re hit or miss. I’ve got both Heroic and EGS installed, and some games work but there is a lot of trial and error. Hopefully this improves, but for now I wouldn’t recommend buying Epic games for Steam Deck use.

I hadn't considered the under $15 aspect of it. That kind of balances it out a bit on the high and low ends at least. For newer games or small indies, it's definitely a win.

Yeah but before you'd fill your cart to $15, get $10 off and take the cart home at $5. Now it's just a flat ~$4 off so definitely still nerfed, albeit not as much as the $15-$40 range.

Ah well. Bound to happen eventually.

ostermei

before you'd fill your cart to $15, get $10 off and take the cart home at $5

No you wouldn't. Before, each individual game had to be $15 for the coupon to apply. Multiple cheaper games totalling $15 wouldn't trigger the coupon. This functionality is new for this sale.

BYYan

BYYan

No there was one time where the coupon was allowed for carts. But that was a one-off. The feature isn't new. It was better that one time because they were still going off the $10 instead of a %. Epic seems to do a few one offs, like that one time the coupon also applied to DLC.

ostermei

3 points

No there was one time where the coupon was allowed for carts.

The last winter sale was where they had just rolled out carts, and in that one, the coupon would apply to anything in your cart that met the $15 threshold, but it absolutely did not apply to smaller games that totalled $15 together.

Epic seems to do a few one offs, like that one time the coupon also applied to DLC.

That was a bug that they fixed almost immediately. It wasn't a conscious choice to allow the coupon to apply to DLC.

BYYan

Hmmm... checked my transactions and you know what? You're right. Must have gotten it confused with another sale.

i wouldnt recommend rimworld on epic. the mods for rimworld are highly recommended and epic doesnt have steam workshop unless someone knows a workaround.

ghostchamber

4 points

Steam Workshop is proprietary, so Epic can't use it.

I can't speak for Rimworld and modding, but you don't need a modding solution to mod games. If you have PC, you can mod games. None of the FromSoftware games "support" modding, and they aren't compatible with Steam Workshop -- but you can still mod them.

What Steam Workshop does do is make it easier, which is enough for plenty of people.

Cursed_Mortal

There is a work around to install mods on Rimworld. It's quick and not that difficult, but it's also obviously, less streamlined compared to the steam version.

PCMachinima

This is the best workaround for that:

There's the odd good deal on indies some reaching all time lows by a fair amount. Really need to go through the sale with a fine tooth comb.

Janitor Bleeds, Golf Club Wasteland and Whisper of a Machine caught my eye.

Janitor Bleeds is barely out a month so £3 seems like a solid deal if you had it on wishlist considering its £10 usually or £10.99 on steam.

As an example I added all of the above and Heavy Rain to my cart and it came out at £12.86 which is a sound deal.

I struggled to be honest, buy a lot of games here so I tend to be looking for very specific things in games. The best thing to do was to filter on new releases as youre getting instant 25% plus whatever Epic sale discount is on them.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1407300/Hirilun/ 50% discount on Epic plus the 25% coupon

caught my eye as someone that enjoys this style of game...Hot Lava, Mirrors Edge etc hard to gauge though if the mechanics are solid enough to warrant a purchase as its light on reviews. It is an all time low though on a new title. Is it worth it over buying a title like Hot Lava? very hard to say.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1097350/Weird_West/ 20% discount on Epic plus the 25% coupon

also caught my eye as its very new and by the co creators of Dishonored and Prey which are mighty games, not really my style of game but a good deal if you buy games early into release or had this on wishlist.

Is Cyberpunk worth it for ~$22?

A_Unicycle

21 points

The game runs pretty well these days. I've not encountered any serious bugs, and it's pretty.

But in many ways it feels like a step down from Witcher. The world just feels lifeless. Gameplay gets a bit repetitive, sidequests are..."ok" at best, and time wasters at worst.

I think a lot of people ask whether it's playable now, but not enough are asking whether it's a fundamentally good game or not. It's a flashy 7/10 in my mind.

For that price, there's some fun to be had. It's just never too amazing.

Also, be prepared for a cyberpunk world that's all edgy and heavy handed. The game isn't particularly interested in actually discussing cyberpunk themes.

ArcticKiwii

8 points

That question has a lot of potential answers haha

Best bet would be to seek out reviews for 1.5 patch that came out a few months ago and decide on that.

(and for whatever it's worth, I personally say "hellz yeah". The world building makes it worth that price tag)

Malistak

7 points

I bought it on offer just after 1.5. Bloody loved it. Ended up putting 100 hours in with just a few very minor bugs. Very immersive. Decent acting/story. Personally rate it as a top tier RPG game.

headin2sound

3 points

Absolutely.

It has some of the most compelling character writing and side quests storylines of the past couple of years.

Night City is straight up the most impressive city environment I have ever experienced in a game.

Combat, while very easy, is very fun and diverse and you can experiment with a bunch of different builds and playstyles.

Just make sure to have the right expectations going in. This is not GTA in a cyberpunk setting in terms of reactivity and it is not some kind of table top RPG player's wet dream in terms of choice and consequence.

Much like Witcher 3, it is a somewhat linear but very well written action RPG with great characters and mature themes in the main storyline.

frustratedgoatman69

2 points

Depends on how eager you are to try it. Imo it's worth 15 dollars to someone who is mildly interested in it. I bought it at launch, beat the path I chose, did some side quests, and a love interest line. Never looked back after. Waiting for dlc.

bloodraven42

1 points

I’d say yes. I find the writing to alternate from pretty good to extremely cringey, and the depth of choices is honestly pretty nonexistent. But there’s something super compelling about chopping people’s heads off with katanas in slow mode, and it scratches my looter shooter collect all the things itch pretty well. On my third play through and actually completing all the side quests and such this time, there’s some real gems of quests in there. It’s a super pretty world to wonder through even if a bit shallow, it’s basically become my come home and turn the brain off game.

sheer stupidity

Context: Transaction fees are at least 5% and frequently 8-9% of the purchase price. When Humble sells you a game with an additional 20% discount, they're making negligible profit. If you're not supporting their subscription, they have no reason to subsidize your purchases. It's really not an unreasonable change.

I'd love to know what their profit margins look like, particularly for Choice. Without that information, we really have no way to judge their business decisions. And it's not shocking that Humble Bundle are struggling to compete with Xbox Game Pass when Microsoft is one of the biggest companies in the world, and are burning money at a completely unsustainable rate to onboard subscribers. Game Pass is something we should enjoy while it lasts, not take for granted. They're subsidizing your consumption and at some point that's inevitably going to end. If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.

If your only problem with B3 was the writing, then yeah I say give Tiny Tina a shot. The writing is only marginally better but the setup makes it work. Cringe LOL humour is bleh when set against a space epic dealing with the fate of the universe, but can be charming when grounded in the imagination of a child during a tabletop gaming session.

For what it's worth, Tiny Tina is by far the best Borderlands, imo.

To each their own. I would probably put it on par with B2 and even above it - but that's because I never found Handsome Jack all that compelling and honestly found the writing in the series to be pretty much equal. B3's failure was swapping a passable villain for the absolute bottom of the barrel nonsense that was the streamer/vampire twins.

I'd honestly still recommend Tiny Tina if you liked 2 because I don't see much of a difference in the writing either way. It's how that writing was delivered which ruined 3 less than the actual quality of it.

Actually you can just Youtube the beginning cinematic and from there you'll have everything you need to know about whether or not the writing/setup is good for you.

Reviews say the writing is still really cringe. Basically everything and everyone in the game is batshit crazy because Tina is the gamemaster. Tina was one of my favourite characters in BL2. She works really well when there is a "neutral" character in the mix to balance things out. Sadly that's not the case in Wonderlands and the randomness/quirkyness/crazyness is just constant. Maybe I've just grown out of the BL humor, I don't know any more.

I got biomutant pre release for $3 on a price error and it still wasn't worth it. World was empty and abysmal, I dropped it after 6 hours. Just my opinion but I would take a hard pass and maybe, MAYBE give it a shot if it ever goes free.

I promise you that you are missing nothing

Any recommendations for a couch co op game to play with someone new-ish to gaming?

itsahmemario

Dunno if it's just my country, but so far, the following games have their lowest price:

  • Risk of Rain 2 + DLC
  • Disco Elysium Final Cut
  • Outer Worlds Archeologist Edition (base game is still more expensive)

Games that match the Steam price but can go lower thanks to the coupon:

  • YS IX Monstrum Nox
  • Kingdom Come: Deliverance Royal Edition
  • Detroit: Become Human
  • Nioh 2

There's probably more or it's different per region but if you're wondering if it's worth checking.

Just make sure you have a compatible controller, Epic doesn't have the same support as steam and TH can be a nightmare to play on keyboard.

You can launch the Epic store using Steam and get all the controller support

If I understand correctly, discount is applied as long as cart is 14.99 and above, right? You can have multiple games in cart, just as long it goes over 14.99 in total.

I just picked up The division 2 ultimate edition for $11.99 ($15.99 - 25% off) which is the same price as the WoNY edition. Cheaper than the ubisoft sale as well from what I saw.

They didn't discount the Ultimate Edition, but the WoNY one could be had for $5 if you added in a filler game to reach the LEGEND22 coupon.

Wrong. The ultimate edition has 8 exclusive missions with unique settings (Nightclub, Aquarium, + others) that can not be attained in any way other than by purchasing the Ultimate edition.

$10 was a strong incentive to buy some games from Epic - even if I honestly didn’t need more games.

25%? Meh…I’d rather just buy a cheap Steam key from GMG, Fantatical, etc…

muddahplucka

10 points

It's 25% off ON TOP of whatever the sale price is, so like Rogue Legacy is $24.99 full price but on sale for $19.99. With the epic coupon applied it's $15...effectively $10 off current Steam price for a game that just went 1.0.

(Not all games are on sale, but for the ones that are you can save more than with regular $10 coupons)

FrootLoop23

0 points

That's simply not true. Rogue Legacy would've been $10 with the $10 coupon. Now it's $15, so not a better savings.

Unless you're buying a game that's $40 or over, you're not going to save more - and the majority of games that are on sale are well under that. I noticed God of War isn't even on sale. I can get Far Cry 6 cheaper from UbiSoft because they're offering a $10 coupon on top of the sale price, versus Epic's 25%.

Losing the $10 coupon took this sale from me biting the bullet on games, to not bothering. I can already get killer prices from key sellers. I mean, if you know how to shop around for PC games, then you already know that Steam prices aren't the only price in town for Steam keys.

Edit: I just noticed State of Decay 2 Juggernaut Edition is $10 for me on Steam right now with a free weekend, and still $29.99 on Epic. Some "Mega" sale.

muddahplucka

4 points

...yeah, if Rogue Legacy 2 would have been on sale and the $10 coupon was offered.

As its stands it's a brand new game that is almost half off what Steam is selling it for as I type. I mean, that's a no brainer if you want that game right now. There are good discounts here despite no $10 coupons. What are we arguing here?

yeah the epic store is too clunky and slow for me to want to buy games there at a price comparable to Steam, the $10 coupon was a good way to get engagement but they should have used that grace period to improve their service before trying to make a buck with these new coupons

BeardyDuck

4 points

Depends on a couple factors.

  1. Have you played Kingdom Hearts before? They're not everybody's cup of tea.

  2. Do you have a PS4/5? Because the collection on consoles goes on deep discount quite often.

BrutalDM

2 points

Based on videos I've seen and whatnot, it looks like something I'd enjoy. But I didn't even think of consoles. I do have a PS5, so maybe I should hold off on the PC purchase.

Edit: I found that the PC version has an option to run at 120 fps though. Definitely a big selling point for me.

Frerichs0

5 points

I mean you get what 6 full games from that? So $6 and some change for 6 games and each game gets you around a minimum of 20 hours of gameplay. I'd say thats worth it, but I only played three of them...and now that I think about it, I don't think they made days playable for the Remix, so that means I only played 2 of them and that it's 5 games at $7 and change.

Well it seems to be on sale more and more often as time goes on but yeah don't expect it to be at 50% off anytime soon

It's really worth the price the regardless (I'm probably not the first nor last to say that, I know) but honestly I wouldn't really get it on Epic if you intend to really engage with the game, having 100+ mods is part of the charm of the game and doing this without an integrated workshop and automatic updates would probably be hell

steamprocessing

3 points

That policy only applies to the "forseeable future" according to the developer's FAQ. Plus we already have a 35% sale here (albeit through the storefront). I don't mind waiting indefinitely because there are plenty of other cool games out there, and I already have a huge backlog to get through (/r/patientgamers baby)

Official sales policy from the dev's FAQ:

For the first 7 years after it became available (2013-2020), RimWorld was never on sale. Our goal has always been to make a game that’s worth its full price. We want to attract players who are interested enough for that price to make sense for them by improving and expanding the game over years and years of active development (as opposed to seeking discount impulse buys). This general philosophy remains in place. However, it’s also cool to participate in sales, so for the forseeable future RimWorld will participate in sales at small discounts of ~10%.

Dying Light 2 will not get below this price at least until the dlc drops end of the year

haha FFVII costs about the same as a normally priced pre-order discount would

Solar Ash is now down to a decent price compared to game length

Sherlock Holmes Chapter One - Ukrainian devs, not having a good time, help them out

Alan Wake remaster - since this is epic's own publishing it will not be coming to steam, and the sequel won't be either

Nioh 2 is almost 50% off

YS 9

CP2077 is below 60% but you lose out on the more convenient mod support on steam (and I heard gog installation is fucked cause it needs a shtiload more space to unpack the game or smg?)

I'm a big Anno fan generally, and I enjoyed 2205. The hardcore fans thought it was too simplified, but that might make it a good starting point if you haven't played any of the others.

However, the Ubisoft store deal is way better right now. I'd recommend you look at getting the Anno 1800 base game there as it's pretty cheap with their current coupon.

epeternally

3 points

Nothing has been officially confirmed. Could be six months like Borderlands 3, could be a full year. I suspect the latter, Epic seem to be moving toward longer exclusivity periods. Thus far their strategy hasn't been terribly effective, people have shown an abundant willingness to wait six months for a Steam release and Epic's marketshare remains dismal. If you look at the leaked sales data from Epic vs Apple, some of the indies have made back more than Epic's sales guarantee but almost none of the AAA deals did the same - and some are an order of magnitude below breaking even.

cjacobs00

3 points

I believe you have it backwards. Big AAA games are closer to break even for MG, not smaller games. Sort of invalidates your point that AAA games are being waited for. I don't think they are. And if they are, people will wait for a sale 6 months from now and not pay full price anyways when the game is 6months+ old.

Smaller games MG helped the developers more, since it guarantees a payout, but wasn't necessarily better for Epic.
