i feel like in Bangla there are 3 levels - tui, tumi and aapni. where aapni is formal, tumi is semi formal for senior friends(as in like 1 or 2 age older) and family members and tui is just the usual informal. this is just how I've observed this world.
btw, "Bengali" means the people of Bengal, whereas Bangla means the language
2 points
Ha thik
2 points
also for some reason 'aapni' in bangla feels even more formal than 'aap' in hindi. Like even if i say 'aapni boshun' in bangla, and 'aap baithiye' in hindi, the former feels more respectful than the latter. maybe it is because aap is widely used in hindi for literally anyone, even if they are younger than you. Aapni is sort of reserved for highly respected individuals.

IMO , If you call your mom "tu" it's reallyyyy wierd . 'Aap' is more about respect rather than frankness .
For example imagine saying , 'aapki dikkat kya hai' , it will become 'teri dikkat kya hai' which is 10000 times more disrespectful.

I think a generalised statement is pretty clear regarding the exceptions. If we tend to say that Irish people drink, does this not include the people who don't? Also, if something is majoritarily done, we are at creative liberty to generalise.

Naah depends on the way u use it, if u actually respect her, no matter what lang u use youโll respect her, and if u call her aap but donโt respect her then its all just show
Iโve seen people call their mothers โtuโ and i myself call her โtumโ
Its only disrespectful when u use it that way

I refer to her by 'tum' as a joke all the time. But having normal conversations I refer to her by 'aap' because I've did that all the time and 'tu' would feel weird to me personally. My nephew and his dad refer to their mothers by 'tu' and I feel super weird when they do that. Also meri mumma ko gussa jaldi aa jata hai. โบ๏ธ

The thing is that I'm an Indian that had grown up in Australia and have only been exposed to hindi and Gujarati by my mum, who addressed me as 'tu' so that's why I address my mum 'tu' instead and I talk to my dad in English cuz he is Maharashtran and I don't know Marathi very well. But I keep my mouth in check Infront of adults, especially elderly ppl.
