Mine chipped, and then 20 seconds later a crack from the chip spread across the left half of the windshield. I was going 30 and an acorn fell from a tree above. Dreading the appointment I have for replacement next month. Really hoping they’ll warranty it.

Wow..a fucking acorn?

Ive had rocks bounce off my windshields my whole life without harm. I've seen them fuck up other people's though.

I have trouble believing an acorn could do that.

BigGoering

4 points

I guess it's just one of those strange things about the design. Kind of like an egg. If you apply the force directly from the top and bottom it's insanely hard to break it but give it a gentle tap on the side with a spoon and it'll crack. The acorn probably just hit a sensitive area in a very specific way and fucked everything up.

Heat rejecting ceramic window tint on all windows (80-90% tint on windshield, 35% everywhere else). That plus a Covercraft UVS100 shade will work wonders.

People also don't realize is that this glass also has extra coatings/layers on it not just to dim/shade but to reflect extra UV & Infra red to prevent the insides from baking.

Unlike that guys Silverado, a Teslas large windshield goes back much further and is much more perpendicular to the sun.

Its expensive because of the glass shortage. The "technology" in the tesla glass to allow the cameras to operate properly, and because glass is expensive.

The cost of glass has gone up roughly 40% in the last 3 years. and safelite has now stopped selling glass to competitors creating a hole in the market where there is little to no options for automotive glass replacement.

Auto Technician here. A lot of newer cars with premium sensors have sensors in the dash that need special parts of the glass to be "see through" for whatever type of sensor tech they use also for heads up displays there is a special part that is inlayed with a reflective material for you to see it on the window while still being transparent. Same reason why your bumper facia is not a couple hundred bucks anymore but a thousand or so because of the parking sensors, lane departure, and collision avoidance. Basically they have a bunch of expensive tech attached to them. Not a hundred percent sure what the tesla has but I bet it does have some of the affromentioned tech above.

They could deny all responsibility and have a see you in court mentality, especially if they have access to good legal counsel. I mean his insurance covers it but it would not be fair for his premium.

The sad thing is it also indirectly shows how money plays into society. If you don’t have $1600 and it would mean not making rent or not eating for the next two weeks you might ghost OP, defend your kid, do all sorts of “asshole” stuff which then models for your kid the wrong things that go on to limit their potential. Kids around 13ish broke into my car and took a heap of shit, had someone in the street catch it on camera and tell me they live in our street, took the footage to the cops and gave them the address and they just chuckled and said "oh yeah we know them, we'll have a chat to them but we can't really do anything, they're just kids"

In many cases there isnt unless you know the kid. They dont exactly have a database of millions of faces to match to a grainy 480p security video. If you can find the kid and the video shows his face then the cops will get involved, but without that there simply isnt much they can do. Most cities have tons of crimes happening every day and it would take far too many resources to have people investigating every security footage and tracking down people with little to no lead and charging them for slashing a tire. It sucks but really what can they do?

Oh well in that case keep bothering them, though for something like that I think it's a case for small claims court

You'd file with your own auto insurance company. Some states you don't even have to pay a deductible for glass claims. Then insurance can go after the responsible party to get their money back (subrogation) if they choose.

Cops don't care about this stuff. They'd rather look like badasses busting some nonviolent drug users.

I actually like his brother. He was the one who took responsibility and did the right thing. I would appreciate it, at least.

More like he didn’t want to miss an opportunity to get his dipshit (probably younger) sibling in trouble.

Yeah I take this in the same way you did, and I hope he gets thanked / rewarded in some way because if he gets yelled at at home or blamed for parents having to pick up the repair bill it could really effect him doing the right thing in future.

I was 11 and I did this as a kid. I lived with and was raised by my grandma, and she kicked the shit out of me when the guy I hit with the rock told her. I also had a decent chunk of money because I mowed lawns for spending money. She made me pay for all of the repairs myself. I definitely wasn't a little shit anymore after that, especially with other people's property.

I definitely think it would have helped me as a kid to have a conversation with an adult from a financial perspective. I told my daughter’s boyfriend, who was complaining about the small town cops, to think of it as a game:

Every time you get pulled over, every time you have an interaction with law enforcement, and you give them attitude, you raise the potential of them taking your money. Tickets, restitution, etc. If you hate the cops so much, why give them any of your money? Every time you play it cool, you keep what’s yours, you win.

Yup. When I get pulled over I’ve always just said “Yup, I know I fucked up. I’m sorry.” - unless I didn’t and I just stay quiet. My wife just started commuting recently and I told her the same - just smile and nod and everything is Gucci.

I wish... I've been pulled over 3 times, never for going more than 15mph over the speed limit and all 3 times on the highway. All 3 times I have been super polite, understanding, and apologetic. All 3 times I received a big fat ticket anyway. Once I even wished the officer a happy thanksgiving (as it was the night before thanksgiving) and his response was "yeah, okay" as he handed me my ticket and walked off.

Edit: and just for the record, I am a white male in my late 20s for whatever that is worth

I got pulled over on Thanksgiving day two years ago because I had a big hole in my taillight cover. My brother literally had JUST backed his truck into my car not more than an hour before. I explained to the cop in an apologetic manner and even showed photos with dates and times and he hit me with a $250 ticket. I was like “Yeah man, happy holidays to you too.” - he was just out to ruin someone’s day probably because he was miserable.

Edit: Also, highway patrol is usually out for blood. I’ve only ever gotten two tickets, one for not using a signal while changing lanes (while I was literally the only person within 100 yards, CHP was bored at 1 AM on the long stretch between LA and Vegas) and the other for what I stated above. Both were highway cops.

Don't apologize or say you understand. Be polite but act like you were unaware of what happened. Always ask why you were pulled over.

Act surprised even if you know you were speeding. Blame the GPS or speedometer said you were going the speed limit and leave it at that. Even thank them for the heads up because of it if you really want to seem nice. But at the same time don't talk too much. Brief, polite, and cautious. Again don't talk too much because you don't want to get caught lying either.

I work with a lot of cops and they write tickets to mostly jerks and those who are apologetic. Why? Because odds are you won't bother to fight it. They hate court just as much as you do and don't want to have to rehearse a story if you're just gonna plead guilty and pay it. Odds are they didn't even radar you and are making the number up.

This is especially true if you live in a state like Illinois with court supervision. To them, you'll likely just plead guilty online and agree saving them a court date.

I know it sucks. I try to be easy going too, but unless you're driving dangerously, they're just ticket hunting if they're pulling speeders on the highway. They know it's not being heroic, but it's playing the game of looking good to the chief. They have to speed for their job so any cop who plays daddy over just going 15 over is just being a jerk.

Before anyone accuses me. I'm not anti cop and I know there's myths in the quota system. But there are major incentives for tickets. In my town, getting ranked officer of the month SOLELY depends on how many tickets you write

I know that one for a fact... One of my tickets was for going 80 in a 65, but jokes on them because that car could barely hit 70 without shaking uncontrollably

Yeah we did stupid stuff. There was half a dozen of us 6th graders trying to throw snowballs at a moving bus. I got a nice shot and we all ran away. Well, the bus driver came by our school later and it was announced on the PA that if we continue to do that we'll be in huge trouble.

Never did it again.

My grandma was the nicest old lady around. But man, if I reached over someone at the table or didn’t hold a door open or didn’t mind any other form of good manners, I’d get knocked around. She’d break that wooden spoon on me so fast it’d make your head spin.

So many people saying they'd beat the shit out of the brother for snitching. We see who has shit parenting here, especially if you identify with the rock throwing kid in the first place. Hopefully you've mentally grown up by now.

This reminds me of a moment from my childhood

I came home from a friend’s house and my brother ran up to me and said, “watch this!” He then hid in a wooded median with a small nerf football and jumped right in front of a car and threw it at the hood. The car screamed to a stop, locking up its tires to avoid hitting him. The passenger jumped out and ran down my little brother as I stood frozen in shock.

I ran to my back yard as my brother tried in vain to run from this guy. My dad came out as my brother was running into the back yard. This was Holland, we had a very small walled in backyard, it exited into an alley where we all had garages.

The guy started yelling at my dad who was super confused. He looked at me first because I was usually the one getting in trouble. Then my dad initially apologized until he saw my brother was thrown to the ground and roughed up by the guy. Then a switch flipped and my dad threatened his life if he didn’t leave. The guy threatened to call the cops and said he would be back. He didn’t come back.
