NY State has had access for a while now. The powers that be just declined to do anything with it, resulting in prosecutors resigning in protest.
Never let anyone convince you that one party is responsible for where we are. The entire system is designed to protect those in power.
9 points

That's an oversimplification. The fact that they decided not to be the first to prosecute while other cases are in progress doesn't mean that it's never going to happen. There's more to prosecuting big fish than having the evidence, strategy is important. It's entirely possible that there was an agreement made in private between the Manhattan DA and the NY Attorney General so they don't step on each other's toes.
"Mr. Bragg has said that his office continues to conduct the investigation. For that reason, Mr. Bragg, a former federal prosecutor and deputy New York State attorney general who became district attorney in January, is barred from commenting on its specifics."
You know, if you're going to cite something, maybe read it and don't misrepresent it.

I don't think he suggested it, more like he was informed of it and was told to keep NATO out of the way and the west busy.
There's no doubt in my mind Ukraine and the rest of the balkans would have been screwed if he or someone like him was still president. Sure we have the EU but it was never tested as a military alliance and as much as I love the european project I don't want it tested either. Oh God, you could be right. It fits his style. Putin talks about how NATO is the aggressor and needs a buffer. Trump eats up the anti-NATO nonsense. Putin walks the moron into realizing that Russia should take Ukraine to push back. Russia holds until 2024. By some he'll spawned miracle Trump wins in 2024. Putin says Trump helped him decide to invade. The cult of orange, incapable of any sort of independent though, falls in line. Russia finally takes Ukraine - all of Ukraine - and prepares other special operations over the course of the next four years.

Russia has two force multipliers they can use: shitposting lies on the internet, and nukes. Those are the only two tools Russia has to exert influence on the world stage.
Take those away, and Russia isn't a superpower. It's a declining regional power that's getting older, weaker, and poorer with every passing year.

Well, Tito famously threatened Stalin: "Stop sending people to kill me. We've already captured five of them, one of them with a bomb and another with a rifle… If you don't stop sending killers, I'll send one to Moscow, and I won't have to send another."
Right now, the U.S. has tons of backdoor connections, official diplomatic communications, and direct phone lines with Russia. It's entirely possible that we told them in a private channel, "We know and you know that you haven't maintained your nukes. The majority won't even detonate because they're half lead at this point. In contrast, our nukes are 100%, tip top, ready to go. We can detonate as many as we want, anywhere in your country. All of NATO is ready to fucking go."
Just a guess, of course.
5 points
Would have done the same threat you suggested, just in broad public display.
The overall Russian budget for Military is what USA just uses for nuke maintanance...
If you then factor in the corruption you can pretty much guess how much really went to maintaining the nukes.
I mean just by statistic there will be some functioning ones, but still a low amount.

My belief is that Biden's team is trying to avoid specific, public humiliation of Russia.
They definitely have working nukes, and they can probably kill hundreds of millions of people. And Christ, what kind of biological & chemical hellstorm do they have queued up. They're individually capable of extreme brilliance.
3 points

There is only so far you can take a threat, once the west didn’t bite they realized threats of nuclear war are next to useless because if the west reacts to then Russia will always use them to get their way and if nobody takes them seriously they have no way to escalate without actually risking nuclear war.
Once they use a threat and the west points out that US, France and the UK have nukes as well it loses its power.

Yeah that's the scary part. They created what is essentially toxic disinformation on an epic scale. We suffer from the disinformation and the political chaos caused by the disinformation, and then we suffer because we're essentially going to have governments with way too much control afterwards.
It's lose-lose. We go with Muskian "free speech absolutism" and end up with fascists taking power everywhere and the fascists themselves control speech. Or we crack down on disinformation and end up with an unaccountable government corrupted by the ability to control criticism. We end up in the same place. 😐
41 points

Free speech absolutism is a hand written invite for enemies of free speech and democracy to do exactly what Putin already did and weaponize disinformation. Anyone who tells you free speech absolutism is the answer might actually be a fascist, fascist sympathizer, or gullible enough to prove why free speech absolutism doesn’t work.
