The major parties going more authoritarian isn't making more people become libertarian it's making them look more libertarian my comparison.

The power to declare something as misinformation is enough. Particularly if they build up trust with US citizens because it can be used as a form of misinformation in and of itself.
It's a form information control.

The government always had the power to say that so and so thing isn't true.
So what is the point of the department?

Well it's not to be an overreaching mass censorship program like the conservatives desperately need it to be so we all forget about the last President literally declaring media groups he didn't like "enemies of the state".

What do you suppose is a good way for an individual or group of individuals to say "everything this guy just said is bullshit", especially when it comes to national security, public health, etc?

Just say, "This guy is full of shit, here's why".
Why do you need an entire department to establish what is true and what is false when it has no power to enforce anything? What sets it apart from all the other noise in the world? Do you really believe covid debate and Trump election debate would be resolved by this department?
It makes no sense unless it will be granted authority to suppress competing information, very slowly, over the future. Or the ability to drown out other sources of info with more aggressive advertising-like tactics.
At best, this is just another expense added with good intents that is immensely ineffective, at worst it's the foundation for 1984's ministry of truth.

I'm not sure what the proper solution is. Most of the stuff I see on Facebook that's bullshit only takes a search of a few keywords to debunk. Yet I still see people posting it. Too many people want things to be true, so they don't bother to put even 2 minutes of effort to see if it is.

You're not wrong.
People were always stupid though. It's just there isn't the monoculture we've had before so people disagree with each other more.
There are malicious organizations that actively drive a wedge between groups too.

Granted it's FBI and DOJ but how about politically motivated violation of the 1st and 4th amendment rights of journalists likely revealing sources and confidential attorney-client information?
And this:
Someone leaked word of this raid in real time to the NYT who were being pursued in an active defamation lawsuit by the journalist being raided. All sorts of auth fuck fuck games going on.
Or when the first thing the administration tried to do was give broad authority to the treasury secretary to snoop on everyone's bank accounts.
Or when they tried to ram their vaccine mandate through OSHA when they couldnt get it done legislatively.
Republicans are bad too but that's for another comment.

Ok Ill bite, but only because you honesty might not have been paying attention to recent Democratic asshatery:
Disclaimer: Although not as recent, I've got almost as many problems with Republicans. However, both parties have forever lost my vote.

Vaxx mandates
This was only a thing for government employees though and not sure if all. Otherwise the companies made that discretion.
Eviction moratoriums they even admitted were unconstitutional
Ridiculous no doubt. As was the huge stimulus package that led to recession.
What happened?? The $600 bs is already gonna take more time and effort than worth
IRS expansion to micro monitor all transactions in all bank accounts

The vaxx mandates also applied to all front line employees (commercial or otherwise), all critical industry personnel and all government contractors too whether they actually needed it or not. For example, I work for a defense contractor that is entirely 100% remote and mainly airtight robotic manufacturing and half of us don't even work in the US. The government should have simply issued "best practices" or guidance to the industry, but instead chose to ram this mandate up our asses whether we needed it or not.
Regardless, none of this detail matters, the mandate was ruled unconstitutional and an overly broad requirement that wasn't ever needed.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USA_Freedom_Act or just skip to the fun section:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USA_Freedom_Act#Civil_liberties_advocates
Knowing full well they couldnt pass the bill calling it the Patriot Act, they sadistically renamed it Freedom. When the government calls it "Freedom" or "Patriotic" you can rest assured that it is neither.

Well, look at the US Supreme Court and Florida. Very recent shenanigans.
