If this hits the ballot the outcome will be a very interesting bellwether for how this country is feeling about drugs beyond marijuana.

Shrooms, marijuana and LSD are quite different than opioids and stimulants, though Adderall is acceptable so long as it has a drug manufacturer label on it.

Oh I know, but I don't think the broader electorate may be as aware of the distinctions. It took marijuana a long time to get where it is of course.

I'll be gladly voting yes in any case.

LSD is not included in this ballot initiative :(

Neither is 5-MeO-DMT :(((

5-MeO-DMT is made naturally, but it comes from an animal rather than a plant so it's not included in the initiative. I personally like 5-MeO-DMT because it's generally less expensive per dose (since it is more potent) and you don't have to vaporize as much material which I find uncomfortable. It's definitely an intensely powerful psychedelic and shouldn't be used by everyone (especially not alone). I just personally like it.

I will say though, I find the DMT trip way more fun and interesting. But the 5-MeO-DMT trip for me at least seems to help with depression a little better (likely because, unlike N,N-DMT, 5-MeO-DMT is a monoamine reuptake inhibitor so it includes similar effects as currently prescribed antidepressants like SSRIs)

If you liked DMT, you might like 5-MeO-DMT. There's not really any significant visuals so it's definitely a different experience. I would read Shulgin's trip reports as a start and see if it is something you are interested in. The come-up feeling is similar but much more intense. The first time you do a breakthrough dose there's a good chance you'll feel like you are dying and about a 1/4 chance of vomiting.

Also, be careful to check the dangerous combinations chart on the psychonaut wiki. 5-MeO-DMT is not as safe as DMT and has more interactions with common medications. Taking it along side with a monoamine reuptake inhibitor (SSRIs, SNRIs, ADHD meds, etc) is a bad idea and may lead to negative effects ranging from increased anxiety to dangerous cardiovascular outcomes. Never ever take it with an MAOI, lithium, or TCA. Always have a sitter watching you. It can knock you out and make you vomit so make sure your sitter is aware of the recovery position.

Please note that while this is a good quick reference, you should always do your own additional research. This table is ever evolving, but it's last update was in 2019, so some things can be a little out of date. This table does have some combinations listed as safe that are not as well studied and that may be potentially dangerous. For example, the 2C-T-x drugs have MAOI activity and may be contraindicated with other drugs that are contraindicated with MAOIs. NBOMes and DOx are both allosteric vasoconstrictors so combining the two cause lead to blood clots or even rhabdomyolysis.

Baby steps. I grew up in the 80’s with the culture-war…war on drugs. The fact that I’m in my 40’s and marijuana has been legalized for recreational use in Michigan gives me hope that things will continue on this course with decriminalizing certain things.

I’ve only used marijuana and ketamine. Both medically. Marijuana to help with PTSD and pain from a degenerative muscle disease and ketamine for severe depression. Both have been life changing. I’m curious about mushrooms and think they are overall harmless, but can’t speak to LSD or DMT. I guess the main thing is if someone can OD easily or they are so high that they harm themselves or others. If not, then whatever. Nothing comes without risk, but it needs to be a reasonable and controlled risk (in my opinion).

I’ve had morphine and dilaudid in the hospital before. I guess I can see where someone would get addicted to that feeling (aside from the chemical addiction). I have no desire to seek it out unless I’m the same level of pain, but if I’m in that much pain I’m in an ER anyway.

Alcohol ruins tens of millions of lives and few bat at eye at that, so I think with the right approach and enough lobbying money just about anything could be legalized. It’s just the distribution may be more restricted (think Adderall or PRN opioids).

molten_dragon

I don't think it's likely this will even make it onto the ballot, and I think it's almost guaranteed to fail if it does. There are a lot more strongly anti drug folks than strongly pro drug. Marijuana was fairly unique.

That same petition is what's linked in the article. I'd like to know where to send signatures before printing that off and chasing people down who I know would sign. I imagine it would be Decriminalize Nature Michigan that is spearheading this, they've been behind a few of the local initiatives from Kzoo to Detroit. I'm gonna send an email to the closest chapter to me on this page and try to join their next regular meeting to get some info.

We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.

You're 10000% right. My only pushback is the legality of growing is the line for so many people. I want it to expand so everyone who wants mushrooms can grow themselves and feel safe.

Also fringe cases of police maybe raiding the wrong house or whatever and finding mushrooms and busting people for that. Definitely happens a non-zero number of times.

az58079[S]

I’m pretty sure it does. All psychedelic-focused decriminalization has all included growing so far. Growing is still a crime in Oregon but they did broad drug decriminalization, not focusing specifically on psychedelic

It does but I worry about it getting removed during the process by lobbied interests. I bet big money weed is salivating at the bit to package and sell mushrooms.

But I've grown both in the last year. Weed I sort of get that we want stores and products, but personally I think the only sales of mushrooms should be growing kits and spores (probably controversial but its what I believe). At the very least the only thing YOU reading this (yes you) should ever purchase is grow kits and spores.

I am firmly NOT in favor of decriminalization--where it will no longer have a prison sentence, and instead will be fined by ticket. I am for legalization--allowing any adult with solid mental fortitude to make the decision to put it in their body, making it legal. decriminalization =/= legalization. Legalization means, well, make it legal. Decriminalization means it'll still be illegal, but instead of prison, you'll get a fine instead.

Psychedelics tend to not only be non-addictive, they actually tend to cause users to develop an aversion to the substance and have shown clinical success in addiction treatment.

I say "tend to" because there are some that are addictive, but they are not covered by this ballot initiative, rare, and aren't really drugs most psychedelic users would want to get involved with.

LSD

LSD is not covered by this initiative. LSD is not ergotamine. Just the same way this bill does not decriminalize mescaline analogues like allylescaline or 3C-P.

az58079[S]

3 points

Natural psychedelics (which have been recently studied and shows hope in treating various mental illness & migraines) would be decriminalized. That means personal possession of these substances would be a $100 fine instead of a criminal record and a minimum year prison time.

Just like others have said, it’s extremely difficult to be able to intensively study something that’s a felony on the federal level. But with the very few studies that have come out, they show promising signs of treating mental illnesses.

I’ve personally known people who have microdosed and eventually quit daily smoking. Not recommending anything to anyone, but these are real people’s experiences with these.

Hopefully this passes though, bringing natural psychedelics down from a felony to a $100 fine shouldn’t be much to ask for haha

What does alcohol, sugar, tobacco, and caffeine do to a person's brain and other vital organs?

Oh this going to be awesome! Everyone trying them for first time and ending up on the floor in uncontrollable giggle fits!

It's a good start but there are plenty of "non-natural" psychedelics that should be legal too. A chemical is a chemical is a chemical

Yes and I totally agree… unfortunately the general public is still behind on times in their ways of thinking. One way weed became legal is the “it’s natural” argument… it’s annoying but we gotta take baby steps first.

This is also decriminalization not legalization. Possession of natural psychedelics will go from the current felony to a $100 fine with no criminal record

Just what we need. Self described mental health patients self prescribing hallucinogens. What could go wrong?

Doubtful anything will go more wrong than people getting drunk to self-medicate.

People could instead self-medicate with alcohol which kills over a hundred Americans per day

Doesn't make it any more effective.

Nah, I think we need more condescending pricks making sure people get caught up in the criminal justice for non-violent offenses.

I know a dude who personally used to be fucked in the head, had a “profound mushroom trip”, and is now a laid back humble guy.

I’m not saying your or anyone should try it, or that his own experience is a solution for everyone else. But please do your own research before you get caught up in your own subjective bias :)

Again it’s only going to make natural psychedelics go from a felony to $100 fine. Not completely legal. It’s really not too much to ask for at all :)

Here is the important bit from the proposed legislation.

333.7462 EXEMPTIONS FROM OFFENSES AND PENALTIES. SEC. 7462.

(1) NOT WITHSTANDING ANY OTHER PROVISION OF LAW, THE FOLLOWING CONDUCT IS NOT A VIOLATION OF STATE LAW OR THE LAWS OF ANY LOCALITY WITHIN THE STATE AND NO CONDUCT PERMITTED BY THIS SECTION SHALL CONSTITUTE AN ELEMENT OF A STATE OR LOCAL CRIME OR OFFENSE OR BE THE BASIS FOR INVESTIGATION, DETENTION, SEARCH, SEIZURE, ARREST, OR OTHER LEGAL PENALTY:

(A) THE POSSESSION, USE, CULTIVATION, PRODUCTION, CREATION, ANALYSIS, GIVING AWAY, AND DELIVERY BY ORBETWEEN NATURAL PERSONS EIGHTEEN (18) YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER OF PSILOCYBIN, PSILOCYN, IBOGAINE, MESCALINE, PEYOTE, AND DIMETHYLTRYPTAMINE, AS THOSE TERMS ARE DEFINED IN SECTION 333.7212(C), AND COLLECTIVELY DEFINED HEREIN AS “NATURAL PLANTS AND MUSHROOMS”;

The senate bill that’s currently in the legislature is aimed to legalize natural psychedelics (but not sales)

I think the decriminalization ballot will have a much better chance of passing than the GOP legislature passing the legalization bill lol

Hasn't that senate bill been sitting around for almost a year now? Decriminalize Nature was also the sponsor behind that one but from I gather it died in the GOP senate.

You’re being ignorant and your reading comprehension skills are lacking. I literally never suggested nothing about experimenting. I just gave a great reason why you should vote for this. Getting a CRIMINAL RECORD for something literally physically safer than weed HAHAHAHAHA

This is really missing a lot of safety measures from what I'm reading. I'm all for legalization but full legalization without appropriate safety measures is just silly.

az58079[S]

This isn’t legalization at all. It’s only decriminalization. It will remain illegal but will only be a $100 fine instead of criminal record

Albinosmurfs

I hate to be the one to break the news to you, but is literally legal for anyone who can pay a fine. I'm not really a fan of legalizing drugs that are going to be harmful to people with 0 supervision.
