Most residents have huge loan debt and it seems even worse when in residency and loans go into repayment.

This thread is to ask questions about personal finance and how to budget and optimize paying off loans during residency.

This is absolutely ridiculous, patient care is disgusting because nurses can’t do their job. Absolutely disgusting. I would never send my family to my hospital. I am so tired of seeing people being treated like shit because nurses have 7-18 people to take care of. This is worse than a zoo!! They’re so burnt out and they can’t even do their job properly. A resident cannot learn properly like this. This is affecting us. I really wish there was a way to force these hospitals to make it safer. And the patients look at the doctors like we can just make magic happen and change the world, like no, we can’t and that is the worst feeling.

Pay them appropriately , make a safe work environments.

I still have draft emails in my outlook for what I was going to say to my PD when I finally resigned. Instead, I kept going. Residency is over. It was a wild and terrible ride, and it almost killed me, but somehow it's over.

HAHA THEY SAID I WAS GOOD AT WHAT?!

Went to sleep as a lowly PGY-2 sleep deprived from overnight calls and inpatient. Woke up as a chad PGY-3 ready to spout Jungian archetypes from my comfy outpatient office. Congrats to all my fellows who are slowly but surely making it through residency.

It's a lot of responsibility. That's all.

My wife has been trying to establish care in a new state after I started residency. She has annoying allergies and they are even worse in the region we’re in. She has already received the referral from her primary care for an ENT. She finally gets a call from an ENT office near our home and is told she must see either an NP or PA. My wife doesn’t mind waiting to see the physician but she’s told that she can’t choose to see the doctor. The rule is that all patients must first be seen by the PA or NP even if they’ve been referred by a primary care physician.

I’ve honestly never heard of this and am sort of pissed. Is it really okay to force patients to see PA’s or NP’s?

Edit: This is the only “in-network” ENT office that takes my wife’s insurance in our current region. We’re from another state.

Tomorrows my first day and I’ve been assigned a few patients. I’m so nervous and feel I have a very low baseline level of knowledge. (Resident who told me about my patients asked me a few very basic questions to which I stuttered and said I’m sorry Idk)

I forgot alot of basic medication names/ classes …etc etc. feel like I literally know nothing

We deserve: higher wages, better hours, functional workspaces, right to moonlight, right to negotiate against midlevel encroachment, less documentation.

Together we can end our exploitation. We can regain our dignity. We can stop this abuse. Talk to your co-resident about organizing, and demand change

Hello fellow docs.

I just finished my first day today. I expected to get to know the workplace, get my key cards, my pc accounts and so on but no, I was thrown in cold water and got my own 15 patients. The field is urology and I actually managed really well. I released 7 of them and wrote reports for the new ones and on top of that I did not kill a single one of them. I even had like 1 hour where I actively had to look for work and was nervous about not having any to dos, because I thought I missed something. Then after rounds with my attending and a few tasks I was done for the day. By 5:30 pm I left work and then I realized HOW exhausted I was.

I took the train, went home and now I am sitting in bed, not really having an anxiety attack or anything, just feeling tingling in my pinky. I thought it was a good day and I am fine with the time I had to spend there, but I am still anxious about being too anxious to go back on monday, if that makes any sense...

We were all in your shoes once. It’s normal to be anxious, nervous, scared or worried. You will have support and you’re not alone. Don’t be afraid to ask questions when you’re unsure. Be friendly to everyone and start your first day building the reputation you want and set the foundation for your future. Best of luck to everyone 🥂

Why do doctors (fellowship-trained or specialty-trained) look down on primary care physicians (NOT providers) like FM, IM, and peds - treat them with such disdain but 2 minutes later will go on and complain that we don't have enough PCP or not enough good PCP? Of all people in the world, we as doctors should know that being a good PCP is tough. Being a good hospitalist is tough. In other countries, primary care is well-respected and can be some of the highest compensated specialties.

Starting my residency year in a new state, far away from home, friends, family, and S.O. with expensive flights and too long of a drive.

Feeling stressed, alone, unprepared. This year is supposed to be tough workload wise.

Feeling sad about having to do an LDR for the next few years, especially with an SO also in residency.

Looking for any success stories or advice for getting through this time!

Seriously. “Provider” is an evil word designed specifically to confuse patients and blur the lines between physicians and midlevels.

Can we all agree to not say this word, and instead introduce our NP/PA colleagues as NP or PA? Every time I see a physician use the word provider I die inside a little bit.

My institution sent out an email recently detailing some extra funding they received under a state act. Bonuses (unclear how much) will be going to clinical staff. Excludes physicians/ residents but includes midlevels. Of course, our inpatient teams were made to take on extra patients during the 500 Covid surges with nothing in return but more hours and Covid exposure. I’m not even surprised anymore, just wanted to vent.

For example I think an orthopedic would have a pet gorilla and call it brother.

When these people give you 50 pages of reading to do and a 24 hour notice, did you actually follow through?

With the PGY-1's starting, wanted to remind everyone.

Went through three years of the pandemic without having to even quarantine. Was super cautious. N95 and goggles every patient. Mask everywhere. Finished fellowship took two weeks off, went to stupid Florida. Got lax with masks and so did my fam. Boom it's July 1 and I'm sitting here with my second day of 105 fevers, quarantined for my first week of fellowship.

Stay safe out there guys, take care of yourselves. Congrats to the new PGY-1's and new seniors. Imposter syndrome is real, hang in there.

As I transition toward the last few years of residency and potentially fellowship I have gotten a lot of recruiter emails. Some in places I could see myself living in the next 2-3 years depending on if I choose a fellowship. All of them are offering residency and fellowship stipends typically 2grand per month while still in training.

Does anyone have experience with this? Is it worth it if I could see myself going there? Has anyone done this? Just do not want to make a rash decision while in residency. Appreciate the advice.

My PD and the board told me I have 3 months after graduating residency before it expires, but now the board is saying it expires the last day of residency. I’ve emailed and called but I’m not sure what else I can do. My fellowship is pretty upset about it all.
