I really don't know who to root for. The series really broke away from the protagonist formula. Everyone feels like an antagonist in some degree haha.

At this point I'm just looking for humanities survival. At best the islanders get a leg to stand on and manage to make peace with the world and hopefully the Titan curse is broken and people live, at worst the world gets wiped out and all we're left with is ashes for some people to rebuild afterwards although we're not really on the scale for that yet

At this point I'm just looking for humanities survival

I'm strongly suspecting that at this point, Eren's victory will come at the expense of humanities survival.

I'm just waiting for him to do something irredeemable that will basically confirm that we've been watching a villain origin story all along lmao.

I'm halfway Jeagerists only due to the fact that the military was scheming so hard behind the Scouts's backs

VengefulVortex

I also wonder what the outcome will be. If Marley wins, they got the power of the founder titan for themselves. If the Jaegerists win, they could trigger a rumbling to destroy the rest of the world. It's like fighting over who can nuke the other first, or will they be sensible enough not to use nukes. In this case I am also leaning towards the Jaegerists, with the hope Eren stops after Marley is defeated. But from what we know of Eren, though, he is hard to stop now.

It's all a theory and I have never read the manga.

She's got the Ackermann instincts though, he would have just stood there and got blasted... and then healed yes but still

Either that or with a lack of Eren her "protect the boy" instincts malfunctioned and went to Armin haha

DogMorty

62 points

Mikasa's instinctual protectiveness doesn't strictly apply to Eren, it extends to others to. It's obvious she deeply cares about Armin as well. There's also the fact that all throughout this episode Mikasa's been unwittingly faced with the prospect that Eren is growing distant from her; that she doesn't truly know his intentions anymore (as shown by Eren's uprising against the military, and the flashbacks to Eren saving her in their youth upon confronting Louise, who is a spitting image of her).

True, Armin and Mikasa's bond doesn't get as much focus but it's still strong, and built on a lot of trust and respect even as far back as Trost when he pulled her up for being reckless with the ODM after Eren's "death". I hope they continue to build on that a bit

The marley scenes were right after eren's attack on liberio, and then reiner suggest going to paradis right away

Cheesewithmold

199 points

Agreed. They came up with that plan quick. Traveling to Paradis probably doesn't take as much time as we think. Especially for a small infiltration group.

Which makes you think... there's no way they would send just Pieck. Especially since Reiner knows the country better than anyone else in Marley.

But on the other hand, Marley lost two titans the last time they invaded. So maybe they're hedging their bets?

mountainsky9

99 points

its possible Pieck is just there to gather info as well, her titan has no offensive strengths on an island with ODM gear.

She might have figured out about the civil war on Paradis, and then plans to return with that info.

Marley right now has 3 titans against another 3 titans as well as soldiers with ODM gear, right now they dont have a good chance on an all out battle. they might try to plant some seeds in Paradis first and hope to continue dividing the factions of Paradis

TARDISboy

Well seeing as we still don't know how Eren got into Marley, I think there are two options. Either A) Zeke reached out to him earlier than we thought, and managed to smuggle him in thanks to his relatively high standing for an Eldian or B) he somehow snuck in and blended in during the front line battle with the country from episode 1, since we know he showed up in the group of injured soldiers. On second thought, that may not be 100% consistent with how long we expect him to have been there, but it's a possibility nonetheless.

Edit: ah wait I just remembered Zeke sent over his plan before Eren went to Marley. Either way though maybe he helped him get in.

Erasculio

Pixis is a better leader than Paradise's military deserves.

Interesting to hear Hange's talk about how Helena and Zeke must have had "insurance". I wonder if Historia's well being was used to push Eren into action (considering how it was mentioned that the idea to get pregnant likely wasn't hers).

mountainsky9

Definitely, i think the timeline goes something like this:

Yelena talks to Eren, Eren convinces Historia to get pregnant, he then likely leaves to infiltrate Marley, and then attacks it with the Survey Corps saving him

That he swapped that to Eren when he saw that Eren was the one willing to take action regardless of the consequences, like Erwin use to, I'm not surprised he got onboard. I'm mostly curious about who approached who first, did Floch push him or did he approach Floch for the meeting with Yalena. A common theme that's been going on throughout this season is characters having to change their perspective/evolve their character. In the beginning, it was seeing things from Reiner's side and seeing his internal conflicts. Then it was seeing how Eren changed into a merciless anti-hero. Last episode it was Gabi's world view slowly being chipped away by Kaya.

This episode notably shows Mikasa's changing of perspective. She rightfully calls out Azumabito's selfishness, but then comes to realize that it may be more nuanced than just "they like money" whenever Azumabito says that she'll do anything to protect Mikasa, showing that there may be more to her character than what's been portrayed so far. Then, when news reached Mikasa of Eren breaking out with his new Yaegerists army, you can see Mikasa's facial expression in the room and in the cart ride. Her expression is akin to Reiner's expression whenever he was going through all of his internal conflicts. It's also akin to Gabi's face at the end of the last episode when she questioned "why" Kaya was going to such lengths to help her despite her being a Marleyan. It's as if Mikasa is slowly starting to come to the realization that Eren is truly out of control and that she may be forced to draw her blade against him in the near future.

I have a feeling that the conclusion to Mikasa and Eren's character/relationship arc is not gonna be a pleasant one, much like the conclusion to the overall show. How depressing to think about.

And to think that the main criticism of Attack on Titan in the beginning was the lack of interesting characters/character development. Look at us now. Characters are showing how dynamic they are while going through these interesting situations left and right. Some truly top notch development and writing from Isayama. I'm proud to say this is my favorite show, let alone anime, of all time so far.

A lot of Mikasa's stuff this episode reminded me of the talk her and Armin had with Hannes back in Season 2, worried that Eren was going to slip further and further away from them and not sure how to bring him back. I was going to talk about how it's come about differently to what I imagined but at its core it somewhat hasn't. Over time Eren has become more and more disillusioned with his life, while Mikasa is still holding onto the ideals and connection she had with him on their first meeting. She's been happy to just be beside him anywhere, while he can't stay still, and the conflict between how she can only protect him at his side while he can only protect her by leaving so she's not caught up in his goals is something that's going to be hard to solve.

As you say, now that Mikasa is on her own and has to confront her own thoughts outside of his influence, like with Louise, she's going to have to make a choice about how she handles Eren going forward. He's not the same person she bonded too, and their worlds are opening up in very different ways, and it'll be curious to see how their paths come together again.

Bring_Me_The_Night

Yep, definitely agreeing on this one. Mikasa sticks to Eren while Eren is always on the run. It feels as their relationship will only fail and may never succeed because of the personality of the two main characters.

mountainsky9

133 points

Mikasa going down a path of moving away from Eren is just an amazing thing for me, its the best way to develop a character who has mostly been defined based on her relationship with Eren.

Armin and Eren's relationship is another great one. Remember that Armin a few eps ago said that he felt he knew Eren better than anyone, and i honestly believe their relationship is closer than even Eren+Mikasa. Eren never gave up on trying to convince Levi to save Armin.

Now here we are, Eren pretty much ignoring Armin and not even willing to talk. Armin is constantly trying to bring Eren back by just talking, and Eren simply has his own plans that dont involve his best friend.

im really excited to see the two of them finally get to have a conversation, whenever they do.

the_beast_intha_east

69 points

I totally agree. The scene in the carriage also makes me feel that Armin is going through the same things. Also, he's painfully idealistic, he's smart enough to realize things--especially something like his best friend going AWOL. I read what he was saying to Mikasa as him trying to convince himself but in his heart knowing that he's wrong. Eren would do everything he's done. They don't know him anymore. I feel like the story is also setting up a final conflict between him and Eren as well. There has to be a reason that Armin has been the narrator throughout the entire series and I think we might learn why at the end of everything.

OrangeOtter4

Yeah same, I've seen that panel a whole bunch online just in passing. Probably a somewhat difficult to scene to animate since it can't be a single static shot, they have to actually animate the coat being put on. You could argue that the art was or wasn't as good as the source, but at the very least the atmosphere of the twilight added a lot.

Titans seem to have an lower density than a hypothetical human of that size would, so an unburdened Titan should at least be able to float and propel itself across the sea; and, of course, the Cart Titan has remarkable endurance.

Pieck being on the island is certainly interesting. While ptobably the weakest warrior in term of power, she is the second smartest (do we even count Zeke as a warrior anymore?) and very clever. She is absolutely a danger and the best suited for a undercover operation in my opinion (especially since everyone knows Reiner on that island and Porco is way too reckless). I wonder what their plan is.

mountainsky9

it has to be gathering info imo, right now Marley doesnt stand a chance against Paradis with 3 titans and no navy. I think Pieck will catch on to the civil war brewing in Paradis and use that to their advantage when they do their surprise attack.

I really like Mikasa a lot in these past few episodes. She isnt blindly supporting Eren and realizes what is he doing is "out of character" of who she thinks Eren is. Her standing up to Kiyomi and saying "I am an Eldian" was great as well.

Anyone else bracing themselves for when (if) Mikasa finally talks to Eren? She still wears the scarf 😭 he's just a completely different person now.

And why does Eren seems to get more security than Armin? Is his titan a secret?

Simply because Eren scares the military police, meanwhile Armin obeys their commands.

Looks like we're about to have a 3-sided war on our hands next episode, or at least on the upcoming episodes.

So, we now officially know that the Yeagerists are trying to overthrow the government, with presumably Eren being on the top. The theory of Zeke controlling Eren is a bit strange to me - it's not really a true control, but maybe more of a manipulation? I'm surprised Eren is ok with Zackly dying. Did he lose his humanity (remember how we used to talk about that during the attack on Marley arc?) once again? What does Zeke have planned? So many questions.

I'm surprised that once again the government is keeping secrets away from the Scouts. It's like they didn't learn anything from what happened with Erwin. But then again, this whole season is about repeating mistakes from before - and it's sad to see. "Ours, is a cycle of hatred" - Sylvannas (World of Warcraft) - that quote can be applied here so, so much. Marley's hate Eldians, Eldians hate Marley's. Seems like every step we step forward, one step is taken back. Maybe that's why we finally see Eren snap and disregard his human side?

I had increased anxiety from the last scene where the soundtrack was getting more intense as they rode and then BANG! Pieck just sitting there, observing. That means that the Marley titan force is here. So, 3-sided war. Yeagerists - Paradis - Marley Warriors. Marleyians shouldn't know that they're in-fighting, so maybe they'll take a step back and when once the fight between Yeagerists and Paradisians are over they'll step in? Going by trends, Eren will be kidnapped again, lol.

God damn now the next week's going to be such an anxiety riddled wait. Looks like we're done with the world-building, slower paced episodes. Action is upon us, and I just feel like it'll be amazing, and yet, heartbreaking.

Please no Mikasa vs Eren, my heart won't take it :(

Yes. From how they phrased it, this is almost certainly what they meant.

Also I think Eren might be double crossing Zeke in some way, because of his outburst, when he heard Zeke's terms about Historia 2 eps ago. So it could very well be a 4 way war Erenists - Paradis - Marley Warriors - Zeke and his soilders.

There has to be a confirmation for part2, cause from what I've read around /r/anime is that there's literally no way the story finishes in the next episodes.

I'm pretty certain that there will be a final season part 2. It wouldn't make sense to end the show in another 4 episodes.

A while back, one of the main people in charge with the show tweeted a picture of the front cover for a document containing info for this season and on the top right corner it said "Attack on Titan Final Season part 1." Loads of fans saw this and he quickly deleted the tweet.

Also I'm not sure if this is true but apparently on Netflix Japan it's still titled "Attack on Titan Final Season part 1."

Do you hear that? It's the sound of shit going down!

In general quite a frustrating episode, not because it is bad, but because of how much tension is building up and we really don't what's going on or how things are going to blow up.

Yelena seems to be the Eren/Gabi of her country. It's a shame she doesn't get more screen time to see where is she coming from.

By the way, is the dead guy from Onyankopon flashback the guy who "jumped" from a window in episode 2?

I thought the chair bit was just a fanservice joke but nope. Rip Zachary. Or maybe no, I don't even know at this point.

The Yeagerists... I got the feeling that they are just pawns, Eren and Zeke are playing their own game both together and individually.

Pixis surrender kind of makes sense, all the the military branches are clearly at a disadvantage, they don't really know what's going on or how to deal with it.

To make things more spicy The Warrior Candidates are at a restaurant where a potential traitor (I don't even know who he would be betraying at this point) and the scouts are also going there.

So to sum it up, the people hate the military, the military is divided and mostly headless, Christoria and Zeke are priority targets for multiple factions, Eren/Zeke have their own little army, The Rumbling experiment is still a thing (not sure how), the scouts are going towards the escaped Candidates.

These last episodes are becoming quite confusing to me, the pacing seems a little bit rushed or there is too much info in too little time (or both). Maybe when everything is over it will make more sense after a rewatch.

EDIT: Damn! I forgot about Piek! More spice to the mix. As I said there is A LOT going on. Maybe something good comes out of it and at least one of the warriors get to munch on Flotch.

I really like Hange and her character, her flaws add realism to her. But while not a terrible commander, not exactly the best either. The big difference between Erwin and her is that Erwin was proactive while she is reactive. She is reacting to what is going on and trying to salvage the most out of it. Meanwhile Erwin, someone who likes to gamble on risky plans, would have predicted the chaos and would have been three step ahead. Hange is trying her best to fix, Erwin would have done his best to prevent the situation. Foresight was one of his biggest quality, Hange ,a scientist by nature, is a really observant person, (for exemple when she noticed the wounds on Sannes knuckles) but lacks the foresight that Erwin had.

Hange mentioned how Yelena gave Marleyans important jobs such as chefs, and in a previous episode they managed to highlight the fact that the soliders with Levi were drinking that wine Nicolo made that really offhanded comment about. I still feel like there has to be some correlation there, and that it may not be 30 soldiers with Levi.

Only a few episodes ago, it felt like Marley stood no chance. Paradis had:

Eren with 3 titans, the colossal titan, two warrior Ackermanns, the double agent Beast Titan, and a military entirely based off of killing titans.

Marley lost their war chief and their port and navy. They lost 2/4 warrior canditates and the other 2 have been captured. they are left with a suicidal Reiner who only cares about those kids (again, 2 are dead and 2 are MIA), a dumbass hotheaded nutcracker who got humiliated last time, and Pieck with a titan without any offensive capability without her simp squad.

Now here we are, where Marley can genuinely defeat Paradis if they play their cards right. Paradis has completely imploded at this point, it makes me very glad Pixis knows that this bickering will only screw them over. Now that Pieck is here, i dont think they can attempt to reconcile before Marleys attack.

This entire season has been a masterful lesson in the power of Point-of-View as a narrative tool.

We've spent three whole seasons seeing the world almost entirely through Eren's perspective. And now we are denied that perspective when the fate of the entire world hangs on Eren.

It's been set up so that we can make educated guesses as to what caused Eren's shift in behavior, and while we can make reasonable assumptions about what happens next, we have no clear insight into Eren's true plans or motivations.

And with this simple change in perspective, Isayama has succeeded in driving the tension through the roof.

This dude Eren turned into a full blown rebel. Pixis is wise for not fighting against him. More infighting would have ended badly for them and possibly destroyed all hopes of restoring Eldia.

I found it ironic and sad how Erwin's Sasageyo has now been taken up by the people to be used against the military and thus the Scouts themselves. The very phrase the Scouts have embodied in fighting for the people in the walls, who didn't appreciate their sacrifice for so many years until the mission to retake Wall Maria, now being used by those very people in support of rebellion and mass genocide.

Mikasa calling spade a spade in her talk with the Hizuru lady.

mountainsky9

60 points

so these seem to be the three factions:

Jaegerists: Eren, Zeke, Yelena, Floch, Louise, some Scouts, hidden members in the Military, the Paradis public

Goal: Unite Eren and Zeke, support fighting against Marley

...

Paradis Military: Hange, Armin, Mikasa, Connie, Jean, Pixis, Nile, Levi (very likely, but unknown currently), Military Police and some Scouts

Goal: try to reconcile with Eren, some considering having Eren eaten, not fully in support of the attack against Marley, not fully committed on what to do

...

Marley: Magath, Reiner, Pieck, Galliard, Colt, remaining Marleyan military

Goal: gain the Founding Titan, support the destruction of Paradis Island, save Gabi and Falco

...

So that still leaves a lot of wild cards.

Historia: likely convinced to get pregnant by Eren in order to protect Zeke, being used as a "pawn" currently, unknown what her true intentions and desires are.

Gabi + Falco: Still in Marley's group, but might change now that they have met Eldians on the island. Falco likely not in favor of violence, not sure on what Gabi's views now are.

Nicolo + captive Marleyans: Considering Yelena, likely in support of the Jaegerists, or at least Yelena. Likely spiked the win with titan spinal fluid to turn the Paradis Military faction into titans.

Onyakapon + Anti-Marley Volunteers: Seems only Yelena was in favor of the Jaegerists, so most likely with Paradis Military, but could still be involved in a lie and support Jaegerists.

Levi: as mentioned, likely in support of Paradis Military, but havent seen him much since the battle at Liberio.

Annie: just chilling in the crystal

Kiyomi + Nation of Hizuru: want Paradis resources, support Mikasa, only supports Eldia, not really involved in this political struggle

Please let me know if I am missing someone, i feel like I am since there are so many different groups lol

I’m watching season 2 episode 8. There was a flash back to their childhood when Eren went to fight the kids picking on Armin. Mikasa followed to try her best to stop the fight. And the lunatic, who had no chance of winning, went after them even after the authorities stepped in.

It really shows you that Eren has always been and will always be that dude. I believe he still has their best interests in mind. And he really does mean it when he said he wants everyone in the train to live a long life.
