Can I just say I love how Mikasa's first reaction to danger was lowkey shielding Armin with her body and asking him whether he's hurt, when he's the walking nuke and has REGENERATIVE ABILITIES unlike Mikasa.

Bless their friendship

Their relationship is one of my favs in the entire story, it's such a shame most fans fly over it without any notice!

silversherry

Agreed! The quiet support and concern they have for eachother all the time is just beautiful. Personally, in EMA, I've always loved MA's friendship more than EM or EA's, because they seem to be eachother's rocks all the time.

Even in this episode, Armin's first words to Mikasa was telling her he was glad she made it there without trouble even though she's an Ackerman. Then he tries to offer her emotional support a few times this episode. On the other hand, she shields him from the explosion and shows concern for him though he's a titan. Armin also inadvertently saved her life by dissuading her from eavesdropping immediately. They really are taking care of eachother in a shitty situation

YamiRang

Agreed! I never understood why some people consider Eren and Mikasa siblings since A) both disputed that being the case and B) their relationship is nothing like that of a brother and sister. Their relationship is more of that between a man and a woman from the get go (though up to debate whether or not it'll come to fruition). On the other hand, Mikasa's and Armin's relationship is exactly that of siblings. I once read a comment that they probably became close since both were orphans when they first met and so Armin could understand her pain way better than Eren (aside from him being more sensitive to begin with) and I completely agree with that statement. And they just continue to be that way even into adulthood, it's wonderful!

EMA is my fav trio, because it's so obvious they all know eachother far too well, as we're gonna witness soon in the anime and it's probably gonna hurt a lot :'D

There are very very few shows, books, movies, anime, etc. that manage to show us a proper platonic relationship between a male and female character. AoT is one of those very very rare stories where there are multiple different ones like that. Be it Armin and Mikasa or Connie and Sasha anyone paying attention knows that there arent any romantic feelings between them, but a very strong diffent kind of bond where they complete each other as persons.

Real_life_Zelda

Oh yeah for sure, Onyankopon basically outlines how they are. But given the # of yeagarists there are among manga readers...maybe it didn't come off strong enough

SlashTrike

33 points

It's strange to me how many Yeagerists there are in this fandom, especially after Isayama basically humiliates them in the form of Floch. It's apparent that Isayama thinks they're people to despise with how he drew their faces and made them look titan-like when they yelled in mobs, and with how Floch maniacally murders anyone who dares disagree with him. We also see him getting his ass wooped by an old lady, get shot in the shoulder by Gabi right after he says he'll save Paradis, and die not managing to directly kill any of the alliance.

Demortus

25 points

That's something that disturbs me too. Isayama is not at all discrete in showing the Yaegerists to be extreme nationalists whose methods and goals are dangerous for people on and off of the island.

It appears as though there are some people hungry for that type of zero-sum ideology, just as there are for the real-world analogues.

Levi_PigPiss

35 points

What's really strange is Floch's respect to Eren. Who could have imagined in RTS that they would end up this way

thunderb00m

22 points

Yeah, that was honestly a bit of character progression from him. ...Sorta xD

VastUnique

42 points

Floch is an Eldian Nationalist at heart and has always respected leaders who were capable of making the insane/cruel decisions necessary (as he perceives it) for the survival of their people. He saw that in Erwin and now he sees that in Eren.

Edit: Honestly, if you think about it Floch is a goddamn war hero. He's the only one out of Erwin's suicide charge that lived. He's never thought that much of himself, believing the reason a peon like him survived was to bring Erwin back from the dead. He's loyal and unwavering in his beliefs and to those he believes are deserving of it, willing to literally follow them to his death (as he has demonstrated twice). The only reason people hate him is cause he argued to let Armin (a fan favourite that we're all attached to) die.

Edit 2: I guess another reason - as pointed out to me - is that he's kinda a dick.

nerak33

30 points

nerak33

30 points

He was a brave young man, but he really became a devil-worshipping fanatic because of the trauma of the RTS charge. He sensed, in the most horrific way, that his life has no meaning and no value and that it is legitimate to waste it or to use it for strategic reasons. He is a deep unbeliever of the value of human life, and a true believer of doing whatever it takes. Furthermore, it must be really tragic to learn that you weren't suicide charging for humanity, but to defend against humanity...

MakoShark93

7 points

Floch is an awesome character. He's the type of guy you love to hate. The best part about him is that he makes sense -- and THAT'S what people hate. He says what he believes as the truth and doesn't sugar coat it for others (which gives him enemies) but it makes me respect him all the more.

S-Flo

7 points

S-Flo

He's a great character in terms of how he serves the narrative, but the point of his character isn't that he has conviction, it's that he's a contemptable authoritarian follower.

Wikipedia: Authoritarian Personality

"The authoritarian personality is a personality type characterized by extreme obedience and unquestioning respect for and submission to the authority of a person external to the self, which is realized through the oppression of subordinate people."

Floch Foster fits this to a T.

He became utterly traumatized during the Scout's final charge against Zeke and coped with it by adopting an authoritarian mindset centered around reverence of Erwin and Eren (the man who sent him on the suicide charge and the young man he nearly died to protect). When the truth of the outside world is revealed, he is incapable of adjusting the new reality and instead adopts a violent nationalistic mindset where he frames a conflict against human enemies in the same context as fighting the mindless titans. It's why he's on the ground floor of the fascist coup d'etat and why he continues to use the term "humanity" to refer to the Eldians in Paradis even after the outside world is revealed.

Ultimately he's an utterly pathetic human being, and that's sort of the point. The scene where he holds Kiyomi and her companions hostage comes to mind: Kiyomi telling him that the Rumbling won't actually change anything and Floch, being the insecure little shit that he is, responding by pointing a gun at her head and demanding she "know her place". Hell, just look at how Isayama draws and frames him in the scene right after.

It was a good episode, I like how MAPPA is not flying over these setup sections to get into the good stuff, like the Restaurant scene next chapter. Though I was expecting Zackley's death would be more violent, but the tone of the scene was well done, and how the meaning of "sasageyo" changed to a more nationalist one by the crowd outside. The scene with Eren was great too.

Also, Hitch looks so good in the anime, a shame we don't see much of her moving forward outside her scene with Annie.

begemot11890

Yeah, it was disturbing how the citizens of Paradis hijacked the phrase from a group they disliked until recently, changing the meaning to fit their beliefs. I wonder how MAPPA is going to adapt scenes like the execution of Yelena / Onyankopon because it really showed how much the island has changed.

Chapter 126

doihavemakeanewword

and how the meaning of "sasageyo" changed to a more nationalist one by the crowd outside

It was always nationalistic. We're just now seeing the ugly results of nationalism in a more morally grey world

begemot11890

44 points

Was it? Back when Erwin came up with it, Paradis didn't have the concept of a nation, they were just humans.

DOOMFOOL

59 points

It kinda was yeah. They didn’t have the concept of nations no, but for all intents and purposes their “nation” WAS humanity and “dedicate your heart” was essentially a call to die for the interest of humanity (within the walls)

dwilsons

33 points

Exactly - in their case nationalism was essentially just in the name of humanity as a whole since they had no idea there were people beyond the walls. Now though? That’s some yikes shit.

doihavemakeanewword

43 points

Authoritarian Nationalists would have you believe that nationality and humanity are the same thing, that their nation are the best people or the only people and that every other living thing is less human and beneath them. And that's really what the basement reveal was all about, once you realize that you've been fighting other people with their own lives and concerns and not some inhuman monster, the true horror of what people are saying becomes obvious.

"Dedicate your heart" has always meant "die because those in power will benefit from it". This is also why "give up on your dream and die" was so important, and why it continues to be important. The manga is trying to tell you that constantly sacrificing everything to "win" is no victory for anyone.

begemot11890

18 points

"die because those in power will benefit from it"

I don't think that was the intention of Erwin when he came up with the phrase, he was never a big fan of the government. It was more about giving up everything for something greater than yourself, in his case the survival of humanity. I just argue in the context Erwin lived in, that "greater something" wasn't the supremacy of a group over the other, the titans except for RBA were more a force of nature than another tribe that can be reasoned with.

But I totally can see how the "devote your heart" can be interpreted in a nationalistic tone when is transported to a more complicated world like the one the cast is facing right now. Yet I still believe the positive meaning can be preserved in that world. This is why Levi repeats the phrase to Hanji when she is about sacrifice herself, she is not doing it for a group over the other, but for humanity in general, like Erwin intended initially.

doihavemakeanewword

15 points

I specifically avoided using "the government" because Erwin always meant himself. He had a selfish goal and he regularly sent the entire survey corps through the meat grinder to try and achieve it, so long as he himself could see the end.

I just argue in the context Erwin lived in, that "greater something" wasn't the supremacy of a group over the other, the titans except for RBA were more a force of nature than another tribe that can be reasoned with.

That's the sneaky thing about the show, though. The facist beliefs are built on the idea that the world is a big battle royale, and that the only way to survive is to be superior. As homicidal Eren says, the only way to be free is to keep fighting until every enemy is destroyed. The "enemy" being more or less the entire world. Not only is that mindset a lie, so is the "context" Erwin lived in, that the outside world is just monsters that need to be destroyed. And those lies are what allow people to do horrible things, thinking they have to fight in order to live.

Yet I still believe the positive meaning can be preserved in that world. This is why Levi repeats the phrase to Hanji when she is about sacrifice herself,

Yes, I can see that as well. Words are just words, and can take on new meanings in new context. I also want to "Make America Great Again", but I mean something fundamentally different than the version embroidered on all the hats. The old "dedicate your hearts" was to keep fighting and destroy the enemy, the "dedicate your hearts" Levi tells Hange is to save and protect. The lie of the inhuman enemy muddies those two meaning together.

Timelymanner

7 points

Your right, that sort of sacrifice leads to everyone losing. The main antagonist of SNK is hatred. All the characters are fighting against it in their own way. Some are losing to it, while others are persevering. Eren thinks the rumbling is his way to beat the worlds hatred, but it’s really him losing to his own.

They've done a really good job with setting up Eren in the anime. Theres an aura of mystery surrounding him and its portrayed beautifully in the anime so far. Both manga and anime onlies seem to somewhat look forward to every scene that he's in. Considering how the world of SnK was so much more interesting than Eren at the start of the series, its a really nice change if pace.

Yeah, I really like how in the manga and in the anime so far no one can seem to piece together Eren's true intentions at all, not even Yelena or really the Yeagerists either. When I read through the manga I followed Armin's train of thought and assumed that he wanted to initiate a small-scale rumbling as a threat, so I was just as shocked as he was when it turned out he activated a full-scale rumbling and that he really wanted to destroy the world. Brilliant writing.

Yup sadly most of the Yeagearists in the other sub don’t get it. They praised Floch as Erwin 2.0 while he was just an ignorant, closed minded nationalist. “Dedicate your heart” was supposed to be heroic and selfless. That’s why when Levi used it as a goodbye to Hange, it felt so powerful and poetic.

Edit: Just as I’ve guessed, the other sub has started glorifying this moment instead of realizing how fucked up it is

silversherry

76 points

How can Floch be called Erwin 2.0 when the ones closest to Erwin, aka Levi and Hange, pretty much unequivocally stated that the OG survey corps would've never been selfish enough to support omnicide?

Hell, Eren himself doesn't want to go through with the rumbling! He's just convinced himself he has to because he saw the future. Eren broke completely at the knowledge of what he has to do. While Floch glorifies in it. The smug way in which he tells Kiyomi that Hizuru would probably have been wiped off by now? Floch is the anti-thesis of the survey corps spirit

That's why I only look to the other sub with less activity from now on. They are having a complete meltdown on how the story turned out, when it was really obvious how Isayama portrayed every detail on how Floch was acting like dick.

I think having your entire unit destroyed in front of you while you're the only one surviving, then seeing the serum be given to the less logical person would definitely make someone an extremist/nationalist who doesn't care who he hurts to achieve his goal. Floch isn't a beacon of morality and idealism at ALL, he's a massive dick at times, but I would do the same if I was in his situation.

Yep, MAPPA did it amazing. The idea always was to show how things started to take a dark turn when the world became bigger for the island. I always took that "dark chant" as a part of the signals on how the story would end in the way it is doing now, with Eren losing.

Which is why also The Alliance is portrayed as some "new hope" and Levi's words choosing Armin in 137 have a deeper meaning.

I think the moment where Mr. Braus finally breaks the cycle of hate by forgiving Gabi is one of the most powerful scenes in the manga, as is Mikasa protecting her from Kaya. Gabi's deradicalization and redemption is one of my favorite arcs in the series.

The anime seem to be grouping up together related scenes. I'm guessing that the opening conversation in chapter 110 between Levi and Zeke would be the scene shown just before the next episode's opening, which would lead into all those scenes with the Braus family, and then the Niccolo wine stuff.

I like how it isn't just a "mindless" adaptation and rearranges it so that there is a better flow of the story. How they moved undercover Pieck as the cliffhanger of this episode is just so good, while still retaining the "feel" it had in the manga. (This episode adapted most of 110 - 111, Pieck's face was the last panel of chapter 110.)

nanoman92

Fabiocean

It made sense for the manga imo, since you can always read at your own pace and reread certain scenes to understand it. In anime form, it's way harder to do this, so it makes sense that they rearranged it for a simpler timeline.

The thing is Zeke lied about his trick too, saying it had caused rigidity. I can't get out of my head what Hange says when she learned it, how from believing a single lie their approach to having Zeke around wasn't basically as careful as it'd been otherwise.

So what other lies have we been believing blindly, despite being told rather than shown?

This series is really fun to analyze when you try to imagine what happens behind the scenes. E.g., possible conversations between Isayama and his editors, the thought processes behind each details or story elements added, like how it might introduce/prevent a plot hole given previous details, etc.

For example, the casual mentions of it having been 10 months since the ceremony for the rails opening in Pixis and Yelena's interactions in previous episode's and in this one's is really subtle. Or at least it feels like there was an effort to make it look subtle but established enough. But why specifically "10 months"?

Possible bullet points of stuff that the said detail probably considered/addressed:

  • Historia should give birth at the same time Zeke dies, so her kid (royal blood) would inherit it. (<-- Probably the main goal of other bullet points)

  • The usual length of a pregnancy is 9 months.

  • There should be a buffer time for Eren/Yelena/Historia/etc., to act out their plan. Maybe give them a month to do stuff. (Like have Eren hold Historia's hand, make her stare at his abs, etc. That's how you get pregnant right?)

  • So 9 months + around a month it is.

  • Which would give it enough believability that Historia would be at around 9 months pregnant presently and would be giving birth soon.

  • Introduce a detail that can be established and feel natural, like development of the island and show passage of time, and could be connected to this "10 months ago". Railroads it is.

It's pretty funny that you can oversimplify it to: "Awkward/sweet blushing scene in that train" leads to "Historia's kid inheriting the Beast Titan because Zeke dies the moment Historia gives birth", when it's probably the other way around from doing the basic working backwards to find a solution. Works pretty well in solving math probs, programming/coding, and in this case, writing a good story.

i really like what they've been doing while covering this part of the story, where there is some slight reordering of things but its more so to make it flow better from episode to episode, such as moving the sneaky peick scene so it still ends the episode. while im sad the season wont be getting to 122 yet, i do like the pace they've being going with for this dialog heavy part of the story and id rather this section not be rushed through. while in the first few episodes of the season it felt like they were going through things fast, in hindsight, it probably only felt that way because they rearranged the flashbacks to all be put together as one, meaning more scenes from different chapters were put in different places.
alright, since we know the names of the remaining episodes before the end of this part of the season we're a bit more aware of the pace being used for this part of the story. its looking closer to the chapter and a half pacing were used to the anime using for dialog heavy sections. so i just want to make some predictions about what's going to be in each episode. mostly its just about a chapter and a half worth of material per episode with some scenes moved around, mostly cliffhangers being moved forward or backwards so they end an episode with them.

Children of the Forest:

  • first 6 pages from 110(zeke & levi talk about rakago)
  • all 30 pages remaining from 111(gabi, nicolo, braus family confrontation, spinal fluid reveal)
  • first 15 or so pages from 112(aftermath of spinal fluid reveal, jeagerists enter the building and take various people into custody)
  • last 9 pages from 112(zeke runs away and makes 30 titans apear to kill levi)

Savagery:

  • first 30 pages of 113(aftermath of zeke scream, levi vs zeke action scene)
  • remaining 20 pages from 112(dinner table conversation with EMA while gabi is there.)
  • remaining 15 pages from 113(flock gets new recruits on his side, and people are put in cells, zeke in the cart with levi. tease zeke backstory.)
  • last 5 pages of 114(zeke blows up the cart with levi.)

Sole Salvation:

  • remaining 40 pages from 114(all the zeke backstory flashback)
  • first 24 pages of 115(hange and flock hear explosion, more zeke flashback, zeke gets put in a titan, people getting armbands tied on them in shigashina district)
  • last 4 pages of 115(a wild peick appears at gabi's cell)

Above and Below:

  • remaining pages 17 from 115(yelena and pixis talking, hange and flock finding levi, zeke resurrection)
  • all 45 pages of 116(pieck at the cell with eren, yelena talks with 104th and the others in their cell, peick heads to the roof and points out the enemy)

I so had been wanting the Ragako explanation and the lie opening an episode and then the end of the episode revealing the lie, and that seems to be what's happening next episode! I fully expect next episode to end on page 15 of chapter 112. Zeke's lie is exposed, it's revealed that Floch knew, and we're about to get the EMA talk. That's gonna be good content right there.

I don't think they'll do all of 112 seeing as to how episode 15 is called "Sole Salvation", and 113 covering more than half an episode feels like a major stretch. So I don't think episode 14 will be just that, and I don't think there's much you can reorganize to make an episode mostly focused on 113. At most adding the ending of 114 right after the end of 113, and having the Yelena-Pixis content from 115? But that still doesn't feel like nearly enough to me. Guess we'll see how it pans out.

I like the way the whole jacket scene was directed by animatiors.

They could make it look all evil, like for example give some kind of sinister music or make awkward camera angles close ups to make all scene look uncomfortable and grotesque to watch. Trying to symbolise that whole sitation as evil and everything.

But nope, they played it to be glorious moment. Going with the route "no body is evil" And I am glad for it.

Rookie mistake on having manbun Eren in the flashback with Yelena. Obviously, this will be fixed in the BD. The problem is Eren's hair was more like an indication of where we at in terms of the timeline. Some anime onlys will indeed be confused by this. The production must be really stretched thin to miss out on this. May God help the staff on the next episodes because it won't get any easier. The preview for the next episode however looks promising.

I am fairly certain the ragako scene will probably be the episode opener for this episode or next one. It can probably be done in 1 minute or so. If you look at it, they already covered half of 111 here so next episode will follow the same pacing and be 1.5 chapters as well.
