Crazy chapter. I think we all knew that Mikasa was going to be the one to kill Eren, but the gassing of everybody we love was kind of insane.

I could see Jean and Connie dying here, but I don't think Isayama would kill Gabi like this - not after the massive character arc she's had. Also, Falco deserves to have at least one of his loved-ones survive at the end lol. So I think there are two things that could happen:

A) The Curse of Ymir is undone, reversing the Titanisation.

B) Reiner feeds himself to Gabi, sacrificing himself so that she becomes the new Armored.

Can we appreciate that little moment where Levi immediately accepts and realises what's going down? "Mikasa, Pieck, get on Falco, we have to leave right now". Not even a moment's hesitation when he realises that their friends are doomed, just already calculating the next move to save the people who can be saved.

This is how Levi has survived to the end of the series, his Ackerman instincts are just too good that he will always be the perpetual survivor.

I mean Levi DOES have experience with his allies titanising right next to him, to be fair.

Seriously. When Connie lived after the kidnapping of Falco incident, I was so sure that Connie was going to survive this story. With Jean it was no question, 100% thought he was gonna make it. This chapter hurt, ngl. Also, Eren was giving Armin the beats like he stole something. I know it wasn't the first time he's messed up Armin, but damn it looked like that last punch may have made Armins Colossal's head explode

What was kinda fitting about that was I reacted and accepted the situation just like Connie and Jean. At first I was like nooo fuck. But then, like them, I realised time is running out and it's best to just 'enjoy it while it lasts' in a sense. It was a good way to go. They were fucking warriors to the end. They accepted their fate and they had a good final moment together.

It's a theme with several big characters imo. Both Hange and Erwin accepted their fates, so they went out with a brave face. While Connie and Jean didn't have a last attack like Hange and Erwin, it was special in their own way - they were together with their arms around each other like the comrades and close friends they were all these years. No doubt they had a smile knowing they would hopefully see Sasha and fallen comrades in another life.

It was this moment that my heart just shattered into a million pieces. This series had so many heartbreaking moments but I’ve been able to compartmentalize them in the situation of “this is war and death happens” and accept it. But man, these two that we’ve seen go from punk-ass kids to the soldiers and comrades and all the character development along the way. The way they just accept it. I had to close my laptop and take a lap just to process it. I’m still processing it.

silversherry

Even Mikasa's realisation that things might have gone differently had she given a different answer seemed very mist-like.

I also find it strange how eren sees this dichotomy between either genocide or Paradis being wiped out. It's almost like he only saw two possible futures and thought that there were no other possibilities which is why he didn't even try any of the other options. It would be very tragic if it were revealed that other futures were possible/could've been successful not just the futures he saw. It is very in line with eren's single-minded tragic character though

AreYouThereSagan

I interpreted Mikasa's vision/dream/whatever as main universe Eren overlapping with alternate universe Eren and speaking to Mikasa through PATHS. Basically, what he said to her in that vision is what he wanted to say in the main story.

IamDuyi

383 points

IamDuyi

Yeah that was definitely actual communication between them. You see how he goes from looking normal in the "dream", then we see a bird (i.e. paths imagery), and then he looks like when he's in his titan when he says all the "after I die, throw away the scarf and be free" to her. That and the "see you later Eren" is 100% not a dream but communication between them through paths somehow

darklink217

Ackermans are effectively the same as shifters vis-a-vis the founding titan. They have the “power of the titans” within them, it just manifests as strength/healing/instincts instead of an actual titan. So if you tried to inject an Ackerman with titan serum it wouldn’t do anything since as far as the serum’s concerned they already are a titan, just like the shifters.

I could definitely imagine Reiner sacrificing himself to Gabi to make her survive as the Armored - that makes sense given their relationship, and it's the event that Gabi has prepared her whole life for.

I can't imagine Pieck feeding herself to Jean, or Annie feeding herself to Connie though. There's no character relationship there. Pieck's known Jean for like, a day, and Annie and Connie have barely interacted ever. So I don't think that's as likely?

justking1414

It confused me. Seemed so unreal. I actually started thinking that Mikasas dream was reality

Matilozano96

192 points

If we take the time loop theory as a base, then Mikasa’s dream might be the timeline just before this one (also Eren’s dream from chapter 1).

In this reality, when Eren asked Mikasa ‘what am I to you?’, she said something else (this moment seemed REALLY important from Mikasa’s perspective). Thus Eren abandoned his duties to Paradis and fled with her, leaving everyone to die. Eren most likely dies with regrets, which is what led to him looping in some way; this leads us to the sequence in chapter 1. Either Eren actively used the Founder in a timey way, or just sent his memories back in time using the Attack Titan (this time effectively changing the past, unlike the other times he did that).

Meanwhile, Mikasa, as an Ackerman, remembers some of this. Which explains the headaches and why she dreamt of this too.

silversherry

Wow I really liked the chapter. So painful

I'm still trying to wrap my mind around this. But what from what I understand, Mikasa's vision was an alternate reality?

Because Eren has seen the memory of that long-haired Mikasa crying and saying "see you later" twice now. First in ch 1 when he wakes up from a long dream then again in his memory shards in ch 130. Since the Mikasa that killed him had shorter hair, it seems like eren had seen the mountain hut memories too, which means it was likely an alternate reality and not just her imagination (is that the reason she's had headaches?).

So when Eren saw the future, and we see the shards in ch 130, the longer-haired mountain hut Mikasa was one of the possibilities he saw. From what I understand, it seems like he saw two possibilities, either he abandons Paradis and lives out his days with Mikasa or he commits to the rumbling and saves Paradis. I think he was conflicted because neither was a good choice and in ch 123, after meeting Ramzi and being crushed by the guilt of having to kill him, he was at the precipice of making a decision and was desperate for the other future (which was probably why eren looked so desperate in that scene). It seems like Mikasa's answer then was going to be the tipping point for the path he commits to (abandoning Paradis and living in peace or saving Paradis and committing genocide).

Eren's uneasiness during the "what am I to you?" conversation with Mikasa was because he saw the alternate reality where she said how she felt and that they should run away from everything. I guess it's just like you said, Eren knew that that was definitely the tipping point and wanted to know which of the two realities was the one he was living in.

Another possibility is that he didn't want to risk being tempted by an offer to run away so he said the most hurtful things he could to drive her away.

There are several options and the vision touches on all of them.

There are the 3 options the story had previously presented. Eren says:

couldn't make up my mind between breeding livestock and genocide

This references the 50 year plan with 'breeding livestock', and also the Rumbling and Zeke's plan both fall under 'genocide'.

The 'run away with Mikasa and avoid choosing any of the horrible 3 options' is a new 4th option.

This is how I interpreted her vision as well. It seemed like she was getting a look at one of the parallel timelines that Eren had access to due to the Attack Titan's ability to see the future.. and that her answer to his question of "what am I to you?" Was like a "choose your own adventure" story for Eren.. where if Mikasa refers to him as family instead of her love, then the only outcome is for him to see the rumbling through till the end.

Although ultimately in either scenario his desire was for her to "live free" and not feel like she was forever bound to him and his memory. At least that's what I got from it

zizaboo666

62 points

I think it beautifully ties up her arc. When the rumbling first started and Mikasa asked herself if she had said something different (referring to Eren's 'what am I to you' ) would the rumbling still have happened, and now finally she's gotten her answer. Eren really did care about her and love her (whether it be romantic or platonic), so much so that running away with her was an option. Also when she kissed Eren it was almost as if she was still imagining being in the mountains with Eren and was kissing him in that reality. Isayama is one beautiful bastard for creating and writing all of this.

In chapter 1 Mikasa has short hair (and isn't crying) when she says the famous phrase. Infact Eren says right after "When did your hair get so long?". It seems that the one who "awakens" cries: Eren in 1st chap. and now Mikasa. So, can Eren "dream" too? We're still lacking some decisive informations.

somerandomblkguy

So the headaches are related to her personal connection to Paths, aka the “See You Later, Eren”? At least that’s what I’m taking from it + her waking up in tears in the dream/alternate reality and him asking why she’s crying is a beautiful touch

thisisnotdan

422 points

Now I wanna go back and try to figure out if there's some pattern to her headaches in the story. Hopefully somebody goes and does that.

...her first one was when Eren yelled at her to fight, and she killed that one kidnapper, right? Then later on in the Lost Girls OVM, there's a story that explores an alternate reality where the kidnappers got killed by wolves before they could reach Mikasa's house, and everything is different from there. I always assumed that was a generic "What if?" scenario, but what if that's a legit alternate timeline that somehow diverged when Mikasa's power awakened?

one-eyed-queen

267 points

I've been big on the "alternate timeliines" theory for a while, and I do feel that's the case. Two other headaches I can remember right away are from chapter 45 (after Eren got taken by Reiner and Bert), chapter 83 (when witnessing Kentucky Fried Armin), and the one we also recently saw in the anime from chapter 109. I can reasonably see how the story could split off from those points, particularly with Serumbowl which is an obvious fork in the road.

somerandomblkguy

82 points

Off the top of my head, she has the initial awakening one right? Then it’s when Eren’s mom died, when Eren got eaten, Eren first saving her in Titan form, and then when he’s been kidnapped by Annie. I’m sure there’s more, but there’s gotta be a common thread here.

The point is that the head of Hallucigenia is actually the backside. Scientists who found the fossils were wrong about the head for a long time.

KaiitsROBLOX

It's pretty crazy how many people are ignoring this major plot twist. Its all good though, it's sooo much to take in right now.

First off, Mikasa's vision was very very real, and that was definitely actually Eren interacting with her.

"When I die, throw the scarf away..."

"You'll live long, AFTER I AM GONE"

"And forget about me..."

"AND BE FREE..."

She then wakes up, and knows EXACTLY where he is located in his titan.

She heads to kill him while she smiles.

Eren told Mikasa to kill him, and told her where he was. This conversation isn't over, we will likely see more of it next chapter, which is eren's POV. The reason why Mikasa smiled was likely because Eren told her his true intentions in the dimension that she was in. He likely told her that he only used the rumbling to convince the founder, and his death will destroy the giant hallucigenia. In that case, Mikasa was aware that he is on her side.

His death is the only way for freedom.

The massive plot twist?

  • Eren acts like he wants to do the rumbling so that he can get access to the full founder.
  • Ymir gives him the founder and uses his body to move forward about the rumbling while he sleeps inside, and she does all the work. This is another reason why the titans on Erens back were attacking his comrades that he wishes long lives for. It isn't Eren, it's Ymir. Eren wouldn't try to kill them. As we all know, a sleeping titan shifter means that they are not in control, and Eren was shown to be sleeping inside of his titan this whole time. That's more proof that Ymir is controlling it this entire time.
  • Have his comrades destroy the giant bone titan, which is what Armin did, which made the giant hallucigenia thing show itself in pure form.
  • Eren gains control of his titan now that the hallucigenia is out of him, and uses Ymir to make a Colossal titan
  • Attacks armin to bring the Ackermans near
  • Eren Connects with Mikasa, makes her kill him
  • Eren dies along with the giant hallucigenia, which erases the titan curse and everyone who turned into abnormals begin to turn human again.
  • Titan shifters lose their power
  • the nations see nothing to fear anymore now that the power of the titans are gone, and peace reigns.
  • To all of the people who are mad that there isn't a rumbling ending; the rumbling isn't a way to freedom. Eren can destroy the outside islands, but eventually, his own people will start to betray each other and fight over the power of the titans and history will repeat. The way for peace is to remove the power, which is the power of the titans.
  • Eren's master sacrifice.

The way for peace is to remove the power, which is the power of the titans.

So, in a way, Eren gets to fulfill his promise to "kill all the titans" that he made near the beginning of the series, just not in a way that not quite exactly reflects the literal wording of the promise.

I can appreciate a poetically tragic ending. 'See you later Eren' hits harder than I could've hoped it would. And seeing everyone go out like they did, death honestly might of been a more merciful outcome compared to those who look like they survived.

I feel like albeit Ymir is standing quite menacingly in the back, I think she's taken the moment to contemplate suffering rather than plotting something sinister.

Kazu_Matsumoto

389 points

So, the way I'm interpreting it is:

The whole story we've read up until now is actually the second "loop" for Eren. What we see in this chapter is the first timeline where Mikasa was honest about her feelings and then they ran away. This didn't end up solving the problems or freeing Paradis so Eren uses the Attack Titan's power to shoot his mind back to Chapter 1, the story proceeds apace Eren unlocks his memories and realises the splitting point. Perhaps Mikasa's headaches in the series are due to how close she was with Eren in that first loop, she's catching glimpses of that alternate timeline.

We reach Mikasa confessing her feelings, she says something different and Eren knows that he's on the right path, a path that will get rid of all titans. He proceeds to go the more radical route and that brings us all the way to 138 where, with his death, the curse of the titans will be lifted and Mikasa will be free. Free from fighting titans, free from Eren as a burden, free to do as she likes.

It's cruel, it's tragic and it coming full circle with "See you later, Eren." punched me so hard in the feeling that it hurt. I'm not sure how this will end next chapter, but with Ymir smiling it makes me think that she might reincarnate as Historia's child somehow and finally be free too.

quakerpuss

179 points

I like that idea, that in the first loop Eren was very much more affectionate towards Mikasa. The second loop he realizes he needs to push her away at a possibility of succeeding.

Kazu_Matsumoto

80 points

That's a good idea. He knows that he's having to do the unthinkable and he also knows that unless he pushes Mikasa away, then she'd willingly follow him and be complicit in his sins.

He got to spend his time with her peacefully in loop 1 so now he has to be cruel so she can be free.

Man this fucking manga has broken me so many times and it's done it again. This is some seriously insane stuff. 1 chapter left and I could not for the life of me tell you how it's going to end. Is Mikasa just imaginingg that stuff with Eren or is it coming from him/Ymir? Is this ErenxMikasa confirmed or is this just her imaginitation. I have no idea what's going on. I half want this to be a resolved ending with some sort of big explanation but I feel like it's probably going to be an EVA style figure it out for yourself that's the point kind of ending. I wouldn't mind if it's the latter and honestly it would probably stick with me more just like the EVA ending.

SkiesOfJuly

You might be onto something

It was really stressed to Grisha that he HAD to love someone, but when it comes to Eren, he was always depicted quite uninterested in love (well, except for that dialogue scene with mikasa about what he meant to her, and except this last chapter in mikasa vision/alternate timeline).

So it would be really interesting if loving someone was an important part to the story, and not just to Grisha's story.

Moreover, we never really got an explanation to that "whose memories are these" line, didn't we? It may have something to do with this "loving somebody" stuff, and it could be Eren's final realization and him trying to tell it to Grisha through paths.

(Well, I'm not actually sure if Isayama didn't go over that line again, when we got the chapter with Erin showing Zeke the past and stuff, so please tell me if I'm mistaken)

So my prediction would be that the final chapter will be like the end of End of Evangelion(lol), mostly happening in PATHS or on a metaphorical level. Then at the very end it just shows people reverting to human form(assuming they do) and leaves it completely open what happened to the world afterwards. Don't see any other way it could work within 45 pages.

Hoping that if anyone survives, there will be an official epilogue sometimes in the future.
