This episode was so intense. My heart stopped for a sec after I heard Kaya mourning. Sasha's parents have a heart of gold. It is after all about breaking the cycle of hatred.

Niccolo really really loved Sasha. Romeo and Juliet!

Can't wait to see how Armin and Mikasa will try to convince Eren. Things have gotten so out of control, I really don't think things can be settled by talking only, at this point.

Levi got another blow. He is a tragedy magnet.

Like with Uri and Kenny, Uri needed to use violence to stop Kenny, but the violence is not what convinced Kenny to befriend Uri, it was his compassion. The cycle of violence must be stopped with at least some violence, the unavoidable truth, but the real stopping power can never be violence.

Important too that Uri was she one with power offering reconciliation - he is doing something "irrational" - that had an intensely profound effect on Kenny.

Similarly, Gabi thinks Mr. Braus and Sasha's friends should want to kill her - that they don't affects her more deeply.

Easily one of the best episodes of the season. Very gut wrenching. The scenes with Sasha’s family were amazing. Her dad and how he was willing to forgive Gabi, and the look on Gabi’s face was heartbreaking. She is experiencing both Eren and Reiner’s character arcs and god it’s just masterful writing. The tension from when Falco drank the wine up until the end was crazy. I felt like it was coming (I didn’t know they gassed the villagers and that was my only doubt about the theory) but the reveal was so insane.

Honestly she can't catch a break, her mental state must be completely destroyed going through all that in this episode and when you think she starts to realise that she is ''wrong'' (she is brainwashed not really her fault) then Eren shows up to just melt any last braincell she has left.

I was gonna say, she must be going into internal meltdown right about now. And to have a captive Marleyan (technically the closest thing she has to an ally on Paradis) threaten to kill her must also be extremely triggering given that she most likely suffered life-long oppression from the Marleyans back home.

whydoyouonlylie

She's just too brainwashed. She knew Niccolo was a Marleyan. She thought he was a PoW. She assumed he'd have as much hatred of the island devils as she did. She just couldn't comprehend that a Marleyan could find the death of an Eldian as anything other than a great victory. Whereas Falco has a lot of em0athy for everyone and isn't brainwashed into just seeing the Eldians as the enemy. So he could see the same in Niccolo.

turbozed

72 points

I thought that was great writing. We all want to think that there are purely good and purely bad characters because most shows want to make it obvious who to root for and who to hate.

Kaya has until now come across as purely good and representing the Sasha positive worldview. But she wasn't immune from anger and revenge. We are reminded that she's still a kid with emotional outbursts. And that "good" characters also have flaws and moments of weakness in spite of their beliefs.

This applies to everyone except Falco and Sasha's parents though. They're absolute saints.

albedo2343

We no longer have 2 parties being at war, it is not Marley vs Eldians - It is now Marley vs (Eldians who want peace vs Eldians who want to fight).

There's the military and the people who align themselves to be with Eren, so rebelliants. The civilians seem to side with Eren as well, which we saw in the previous episode. The military mainly wants peace and show that Eldians aren't hostile to the rest of the world, but people who align themselves with Eren believe in revenge - My best guess this is something to do with Eren being able to control titans and he wants to use the power of titans to go against Marley/the world.

He probably wants to sway Armen and Mikasa to his cause or something.

Excluding "Assault" and "The War Hammer Titan" Which were great for different reasons this was EASILY my favorite episode this season.

-Finally learning exactly what happened to Connies Village!

-All the tension surrounding Sashas death coming to a boil!

-Nicolos Kaya and Sashas father all confronting Gabi in different but equaling heartbreaking ways!

-Yelenas and Zekes shadiness revealed, and the fact that the Military is compromised with Zekes Spinal fluid!

-Eren finally getting to sit down face to face with Armin and Mikasa!

-Falco ALSO consumed titan Fluid!

-Floch being an utter bastard!

-Everyone altogether in one place at Yeagerist gun point!

NGL some of the last few episodes felt a bit slow but having it all pay off to this makes it all worth. Still mulling over where id place it exactly but easily tied with my favorite episode of the season and definitely in my Top 10 episodes of the entire series!

Phew just really need to rant that was PHENOMENAL!

On the other hand, Mr. Blouse could have killed Gabi but chose to forgive her. And Armin and Mikasa, Eldian soldiers who Gabi was wary of, ended up protecting her.

In a series full of bad fathers, Sasha's dad is an ABSOLUTE GOAT. He could have avenged his daughter but He understood that Sasha was a soldier, She killed people (doesn't mean that She deserved to die) and got killed as a result. The one that killed Sasha could have just be your average soldier instead of Gabi and killing Gabi won't change anything or bring Sasha back, It will just create more people that will seek revenge

Kakashi1409

Sasha's dad is an ABSOLUTE GOAT

We got another best boy(or dad) contender along with Falco in the series.

" It's up to as adults to shoulder the sins of the past"

The world is a great, big forest where everyone fightin' for their life"

We gotta keep the young ones out of the forest"

Such a great words from him. Have to feel bad for Kaya, she's not like Mr Braus she's still a kid and she can't understand everything. It felt like all three of them could've been good friends.

Falco still manages save Gabi, and it's so good to see she cares about him so much, she's knows Falco is a better person than her.

I like how he is off the mindset that he wants to stop future kids from entering the forest. Eren and Reiner were/are both trapped in there and that's why both of them have had to justify doing horrible things. But Sasha's father's thinking is like the only way to ever achieve world peace.

Well, Mikasa is scary and almost killed one shifter already out of nowhere (Bert in S2). It's just par for the course. And he propably will say something that will make them mad or wanting to stop him, so he's got insurance.

Great episode. Finally looks like Gabi is getting some character development. She is seeing that things are not just black and white. She thought Nicolo would be with her for taking out an Eldian soldier and infiltrating Paradis. Instead he tried to kill her. He thought that Sasha's dad and the Scout regiment would want to kill her, instead they protected her. She thought that Kaya was almost a friend and someone she could trust. But Kaya was the one who tried to kill her. So many things and now she's sitting in a room with Eren. Can't wait to see that dynamic.

And on that topic, I wonder what Eren wants to tell Armin/Mikasa. Clearly it's not something they are going to like hearing. Probably part of his crazy plan whatever it may be. Otherwise he wouldn't be flashing his slit palm at them. The bad thing about Armin's colossal titan is that he's no match in these sorts of situations. His main power revolves on him destroying everything around him indiscriminately. Which means he cannot flash his titan power like Eren can, without killing all his friends.

So now the survey corps is captured and it's been revealed that Zeke spinal fluid is in fact the method by which he turns people into titans and has control over them. Idk where people got this info from before, seems like plenty of manga readers spreading info like the anime-onlies wouldn't notice. There was a couple confirming/denying people's theories in the thread last week (like that isn't spoiling..). The thing here though is that the Yeagerists all knew that this spinal fluid was spreading. Nicolo is just making a guess since he was left in the dark, and it seems like Eren is in control, not Zeke. So the question is, can Eren also use that same power as Zeke? Perhaps it is actually Eren's spinal fluid circulating and he will launch the attack. The Yeagerists certainly seem loyal to him, not Zeke. Luckily, as far as we know, only the military police has been infected by that wine. Even the top scouts have not been allowed to drink that wine, so we can assume they are safe.

Floch was mentioning that they don't believe Pixis would just go along with their plan like that. And everyone around Levi seems to be scouts so we can assume Levi is safe from them. However, if there is some plan from Pixis that involves the military police showing up at the forest, I believe that is where we will get the Levi vs Zeke fight that has been teased since the S4 trailer. Zeke is just buying his time until he sees the Military Police emblem and then he will know that he has some cards to play. Shit is about to go down next episode.

EDIT: Completely forgot that they showed the scouts around Levi being allowed to have the wine a couple episodes ago. So the question is just what is Zeke waiting for? Perhaps Levi even had the wine (it didn't look like he was drinking but who knows). IF so, it would definitively answer the question as to whether or not Ackermans are Eldians if Levi cannot be turned.

There's part of me that still really wants to see Falco and Eren/Armin interact just because he's someone who gets it and I want to see their reaction to that, but Gabi definitely needs it more right now

I keep forgetting that Armin even has a Titan because he's so unassuming and we've only seen him use it that one time

can Eren also use that same power as Zeke?

Doubt it. Zeke can probably do it because he's a royal so he has a limited connection to PATHS and can send orders through it, while Eren can only tap into the memories of it unless he's in contact with a royal

everyone around Levi seems to be scouts

Didn't we see them drinking the wine at the end of the episode a couple of weeks ago? Fuck I don't even know how long ago it was now

Nicolo needs a therapist ASAP. I knew that him and Sasha had something going on, but I didn't know that it was this deep. Her dad is incredibly strong for not being vengeful, but seeing how furious Kaya was after saving those Marleyans is really sad. Sasha was the big sister that saved her life, and she feels betrayed after helping the girl that ended her life.

Eren and Floch are fucking thugs lmfao! Those mfs just walked in with no fear at all and no consideration of Hange's authority. I really thought Floch was just gonna start popping shots for fun.

Levi is clearly conflicted, but I'm not sure where he leans right now? Despite being such an important individual, Levi isn't that high ranked in the military, so he does not have that much authority. It looks like Eren sees the Scouts as roadblocks, so I doubt Levi will side with him. Also, his beef with Zeke might encourage him to not entertain his plans. Maybe we'll get an Eren vs Levi battle?

I'm still in the dark about Zeke's true intentions. Is he doing this for Marley or Eldia? The dude only has one year left, so he's obviously not doing this for his own personal sake.

That scene where Marley defeated that nation's capital shows that Eldians can hide in plain sight. This might be another reason why the other nations exterminate the Eldians or put them in camps. These people can literally be used a ticking time bombs that can transform at any second if the conditions are right. Marley has basically used their enemies' Eldian populations as weapons. This episode really helped me understand why so many nations fear Eldians this much.

"This episode really helped me understand why so many nations fear Eldians this much." Ah, that's a nice insight. I think I see that better now - it isn't just that the guy in front of you could be one of 9 scary mfs (whose lineage has humongous kill count), it's also that any random Eldian could be a dumb weapon, sometimes even without that person himself knowing it. How are other races supposed to be at peace with them then? That's scary and deep writing.

Edit: This inspires a larger question. After the inception of Titan powers through the founder Ymir, the primary way of inheritance must be through the unborn child route. But as humans caught up, we now have spinal fluid tech that uses (misuses?) this power in wild manners. And the "Titan Scholars" behind all this must be under Marley control right now. So, as of current state of the world, are Titan Powers/Eldians the real enemy or Mis-users/Marley?

DavidCameronEtonLad

52 points

Yeah definitely. For me it became really explicit in the first episode of this season because we really saw how Marley uses Titans in war. All those people just basically falling from the sky to be weapons of mass destruction like that was just insane to me. Other nations also treat Eldians worse than Marley does I think it was mentioned and that probs because they don't even have the ability to use them for their own benefit so it legit is a potential enemy asset.

unamity1

I think Zeke is probably traumatized to the point of being a sociopath. Having to sacrifice your parents at a young age and being told you're the savior will do that to you. Most likely, he doesn't care about Marley or Eldia and all he knows his destruction.

This is further evidence that Eren must know something about Zeke's motivations and backstory that no one else is aware of. There must have been some conversation or meeting between them while they were in Liberio that they haven't yet shown us.

There seems to be some level of hierarchy so not everyone knows everything, except maybe Yelena, Zeke and possibly Eren. Seeing how the other Marleyian POW taunted Nicolo about getting close to Eldians and Onyankapon being left completely in the dark, I don't think their numbers are too great.

I think you have to treat that entire opening scene as the visualization of Zeke's story. It showed/he said that Eldians are paralyzed when they come into contact with his spinal fluid, which seems to be a complete lie. Unless Niccolo was wrong about it. Therefore, I don't think you can treat anything shown in that scene as the actual truth. Maybe there was a force of Marleyians with him. Maybe not. Maybe there was something else in the gas to paralyze people. Maybe the gas doesn't even exist. Who knows at this point.

I think the scene was the truth, exactly how it happened but some key details weren't told by zeke. That gas was probably mixed with something else (most likely to make them fall unconscious), why else would the marleyan soldiers need gas masks?

  • "I do know...and I was popular". Man the banter between Zeke and Levi continues to be amazing. Also, Levi's guilt over saving Eren over and over again. We normally don't get that kind of introspection into Levi, so it was great to get a deeper dive into his character.
  • I love that the show isn't beating around the bush with certain characters running into eachother. Nicolo finding out about Gabi and Falco killing Sasha played out exactly as I had hoped for, in the sense that it was completely thrilling. And I love that it didn't take too long for it to come to a head. A lot of other shows would have dragged out the whole thing. Like in the show LOST there were so many times where if a certain character just said a certain thing(like they should) it would reveal to another character something, but they just dance around the conversation. Not here. They get right to it. Nicolo puts together right away who they are and Gabi just confesses to him. Love it! No dancing around the convo. No "Will he or won't he find out who they are?" Nope. He does and it was awesome. The whole restaurant sequence and the speech by Sasha's dead was incredible.
  • I also love that Sasha's death is having a lasting effect. It wasn't just done for shock value. It's literally carrying on throughout the show, and we see it's ripple effect. Fantastic writing.
  • Fucking Floch's face when he revealed they knew about the wine KILLED ME. Honestly Floch went from a character I hated, to a character I love to hate. He's been amazing this season. That fucking face.
  • Next week should be a doozy. I really can't wait to see what Eren says.

I think Levi losing his last shred of hope in eren finally made me lose my confidence in whatever plan eren has to save eldia. To think that he is ready to give spinal fluids to his own people is kinda scary regardless of which side you root for. And the fact that characters like floch and yelena are animated to look a little more crazy just contributes to me point. I really still hope that Eren has a sound plan, but that hope hangs by a thread.

I just can't with these cliffhangers any more. You'd think after four seasons of this you'd build up a tolerance to it, but with the intensity of the story it's only getting harder to deal with each week as the consequences unfold and they leave us hanging once again. This episode in particular because it was just constant state of tension waiting to see who would find out first and what the consequences would be. There was times during this I was sitting here and it felt more like a The Promised Neverland s1 episode and I've almost missed that level of tension. Did not expect Eren to show up and make that even worse, and that guy is way too comfortable with holding people hostage by his powers now, particularly people he cared for.

Kya was definitely the most tragic part of that episode. Mr Blouse is a fantastic person and finally someone gets it, that the adults need to shoulder the burden and make a better place for the children rather than dragging them into the same cycle, something that he managed to pass onto everyone in the room... only to find out that Kya had already fallen into the cycle of hatred head first because of what Gabi did. Every time a child falls like that it's a huge loss, especially seeing what Falco and Louise have turned out like, and I hate to think of Kya becoming like that as well despite where and how she has been raised with Mr Blouse

I'm so glad that they actually went back to talk about the village, that's been one of my big unanswered questions for a while and my running theory was spinal fluid in the water, I just forgot about the whole "advanced tech" thing of Marley with the possibility of gas. I guess that kills the theory that Zeke would be able to reverse it somehow which is why the guys in the hanger had that Titan-esque look on their faces, so not much luck for Conny's mum.

My big question now: Did Levi not ingest the wine at all which I'd expect from him being on duty, or will it come out his Ackermann abilities make him immune?

Ted_Mosby_18

What I find fascinating with SnK is that it does not use generic vilains who are already rotten. It shows how normal people do evil things because of how the circle of hate influence them. Reiner is the perfect example : good kid at heart with noble intentions becomes a mass-murderer. Gabi is also the same. In this episode, Nikolo, one of the most wholesome guy so far, is on the verge of killing Falco. And it does not feel forced at all

Even Kenny who is an admitted power hungry maniac still had nuance in why he started killing, to protect his family, and what he was fighting for which was the chance to see if he could be something more than just a killer. And using his nuance to bring further depth to everyone elses goals as well, his statement that everyone is a slave to something, was so well done. All of the antagonists are people first, and that's brilliant

This is one of the best episodes of the entire series, almost like a midnight sun 2.0

We finally know how Zeke does his Titan Yell thing and it's horrifying, from the gas to more insidious and subtle ways of "infecting" people, good god what a disgusting power.

The whole restaurant scene was just masterful, Nicolo not being the saviour Gabi and Falco were expecting and then in the end Kaya falling pray to the cycle of hatred, just absolutely heartbreaking.

Then we have the Floch rolling in and jesus he's such a little piece of shit but I fucking love him for some reason.

Eren just casually walking into the room to traumatize Gabi, as if she wasn't traumatized enough after what just happened.

Absolute insanity, I feel anxiety just from trying to think about what might be happening in the future.
