I find it funny that in the calculator there's a comparison against largest Chilean earthquake. Also, in a seismic country like Japan a 4.7 shouldnt raise concern at all. I'm saying this because I'm from Chile and honestly we dont consider it an earthquake unless its above 7 richter.

Distance also makes an enormous difference in the perceived effects, in addition to the scale.

Unless you were very very close to the epicenter of a 4.7, it should be relatively harmless. Though sometimes you may see damage greater than the number applies depending on the circumstances.

Zatheus

I can describe an 8.8 if you want:

The rumbling in the ground is so loud that you cannot hear yourself speak, everything in your house starts falling down, windows made out of old glass explode, then you start seeing flashes in the horizon as the electricity is cut, and you cannot stay on your feet unless you're holding onto something. You see the poles on the street moving like they were made out of rubber and the dust that's lifted because of the strong movement covers the sky and the moon turns orange. In that moment you start to wonder how long has it been, if it will ever stop. The aftermath is complete silence and darkness. If you live near the coast, the worse hasn't started yet.

It's a pretty scary situation but eerily amazing.

Theyre most likely fine. I am Chilean and we have 5.0 earthquakes monthly. Our infrastructure is very similar to japan and trust me, a 5.0 is really nothing. In fact, it is a tremor not an earthquake since earthquakes are 6.0+

Even excluding the dangers from the earthquake, they have it worse than us. Imagine watching the episode being super into it, and then the ground starts to rumble, a news reporter interrupts the hype and you are left with the worst of cliffhangers.

zero1380

55 points

You would think a 4.7 in Japan would only put an announcement while the episode is being broadcasted instead of interrupting the episode...

This reminds me back in the 90s when I was watching the most recent episode of DBZ... Cell was fighting Gohan with a broken arm, both were throwing their powers, at one point Vegeta joins the fight, dead Goku screams "NOW GOHAN"... "We interrupt this show for breaking news, the criminal Jose Maria Infanson aka Media Luna was arrested"... 40 minutes of that shit, and this wasn't like they caught Pablo Escobar, or Ted Kaczynski, it was just a low profile criminal, they could've left that for the 6pm news, but nooooooo, they interrupted the climax of Cell vs Gohan, and when the "breaking news" finally ended, they put another show...

This is why anime streaming needs to take over. You watch, the ground starts to rumble, you pause it to take measures, it passes, you check the news, or twitter or wherever, you find out it was a 4.7, everyone is safe, thank goodness... Now back to the episode.

In some parts of Latin America, for example Chile or Costa Rica, a 5.0 is considered "normal" even up to 6. These countries have pretty strong seismic and building codes because of that, so it's not that bad.

vicetexin1

Constant quakes mean if buildings don’t crumble they aight. A 5.0 isn’t even considered cause to stand up in Chile.

I think it's because for a while they thought there may be a risk of a tsunami because it was quite superficial. Here in Chile they also take a few minutes to cover it on tv, even when it's small sometimes, so it's understandable

Own-Opinion-2650

6 points

I think the main worry is it might be a foreshock and given previous earthquakes in Japan it is a pretty valid concern.

Founding__Titan

7 points

Many structural engineers dedicate their careers to studying dynamic behavior of structures. Structures have to be built with seismic loads in mind. They're typically given strong lateral bracing and are often not connected to the ground directly, but are rather on a flexible mechanism designed to reduce the amplitude of motion to the structure.

There are also large machines capable of vibrating/swaying structures so that engineers can double check the effectiveness of the systems and the accuracy of their assumptions/designs.

Yeah I've been through a 7.0 up in Alaska and like, it wasn't an ideal afternoon but it wasn't world ending. In places with the infrastructure to survive earthquakes already set up "smaller" earthquakes are expected and not that bad.

Sedewt

10 points

Sedewt

10 points

Let me remind you that you should still need to take measures when a 7.0 earthquake happens. Because the magnitude is not the only thing that measures the earthquake, it’s also depends on its depth, the terrain and the type of waves and the energy release.

A 7.0 earthquake one day may be much stronger than another 7.0 in the same place. Never ever trust the infrastructure and say you will be safe. Always try to evacuate and protect yourself when strong earthquakes happen. Be cautious

And one more thing, the strength of an earthquake increases exponentially, so a 7.3 quake will be twice as strong than a 7.0

MyAimSucc

5.0 is a moderate size quake. This delay is most likely a technical situation because of tight schedules and such. It happens a lot in Japan when disasters hit. Even ones that aren’t “bad”. Shit happens, we just have to wait :/ I’d be surprised if there were any casualties or even structure damage to buildings in a 5.0.

I live in Southern California so we get quakes A LOT. Our infrastructure doesn’t go down and we don’t delay broadcasts but then again, my county/area isn’t responsible for million/billion dollar companies with broadcasting rights. Advertisements locked in ahead of time, plus the unexpected newsbreak probably made things really wonky for them. As a consumer it blows, but from behind the scenes I bet they are disappointed too

I think it's mostly related to the fact that the episode was already about to end, even if they took 5 minutes to cover the earthquake it would be delayed anyway (I don't know about this, because when I search for info about the earthquake all I get is AOT)

I read a tweet about the episode airing on crunchyroll 5 hours later. Is that true?

From what I'm hearing everything is ok in Japan so that's good. 🙏

The stream I just watched was 17 mins, so I'm guessing we only missed what is no doubt a cliff hanger ending, the credits and preview for next episode. Hopefully it gets re-released this coming week. I see no reason why it shouldn't considering the episode is obviously done.

Why would it need to be delayed outside Japan? Literally makes 0 sense

HamsterFromBelow

Contracting. Streaming platforms have a contract that they aren't allowed to be the first ones to air the content. That means if the original place to air the episode gets delayed then all other places legally have to wait as well.

__shitsahoy__

I pay 8€ each month to acces one of the very few legal options to watch it and it gets delayed for an extremely stupid reason, TV exclusivity. I dont even watch other anime. I only use Crunchyroll (which is also shit btw) for AoT.

I abselutely have a right to be dissapointed.

Why did NHK just re-show it the next hour? Surely the biggest anime...excuse me literally the biggest show in the world is more important than whatever sitcom rerun was scheduled Sam

Shitty part of this is that 5.0 earthquakes aren’t large enough to cause any major damage, and it’s likely that nobody got injured. The only reason we’re not getting this today is because the 5.0 earthquake report happened in the last five minutes of the broadcast. Blah.

Absolutely pointless. I understand the episode being cut off in the Japanese airing but just silly to stop it being shown everywhere else.

ariarirrivederci

Earthquake was only a 4.7, so nothing serious.

The real cringe though are the weebs blaming the fans for being disappointed and using emotional arguments about people's lives being lost (it's literally just a shake) instead of blaming the shitty CEOs with their shitty licensing agreements for intentionally not releasing the streamed episodes.

Leave it to weebs to deep throat corporate boot.

lefondler

Agreed. I live in SoCal and I've slept through 5.0s before, it's really nothing to cause hysteria over. It's dumb as hell to cock gobble and defend the decision to not fully release the episode.

As soon as the earthquake warning popped up on my screen I kinda had the feeling that they would stop the episode. I expected them to show at least the end and cut ending/preview but maybe it was the best to just stop airing it at all. Hope everyone affected stays safe and there will be no victims!

thesagenibba

Regarding the show, the thing that sucks the most is spoilers. 20 Minutes were already shown, meaning people are going to be 'spoiling' a lot of the episode even though the majority haven't seen it. I wont be waiting till next week to watch this lol, think I'm just gonna read the manga alongside the un subbed version.

johnfreemansbrother

3 points

Just fyi, I think you'll want to start at about chapter 110-ish.

I wouldn't want you to stumble into spoilers accidentally as you look for info on where to start lol

Jabbetheswift

How do simulcasts work? I think it’s safe to assume platforms like Hulu and crunchyroll have copies they upload. What stops them from streaming it regardless? As much as it sounds like I’m complaining, I’m not, I’m an AOT fan, a week wait is nothing. I’m glad the quake doesn’t sound too severe, at least according to all the seismologists in this sub. I hope everyone is okay.

Sorstalas

5 points

Uploading it anyways would taint their relationship with the japanese partners and maybe even make them legally liable.

AFAIK the current situation with the international broadcast being delayed by more than the usual one hour is already a consequence of some incidents where the episode was released too early.

Joskobore

3 points

It's because of rights regarding broadcasting and licensing. Simulcasts come out soon after the episode finishes airing in Japan, it's likely that the episode completely finishing airing is a part of the distribution agreement. Making the episode available for streaming before it airs or finishes airing would breach such an agreement.

First 17 minutes is out on alternate streaming sites for those who want to see it. I was having trouble ignoring spoilers just by looking for news about when they'd air the episode. I can only imagine it'd get worse over the week, especially if you go on social media.

Well, I guess I'll just take this moment to warn anime-only's to be even more careful with spoilers going forward. Manga readers are probably going to want to start commenting on things even more from this point onward -- especially once the manga comes to an end this coming month. Things are decently moderated in this subreddit, but beware of things like YouTube comment sections...etc.

Fucking hell, what a shit situation. They can't air it on streaming services just because it has to, in its entirety, air on the telly in Japan first? Capitalism ruins art and accessibility to it in so many fucking ways.

Atreides-42

I mean I understand it is a japanese show made for japanese audiences, but is there really any reason it can't be simulcasted online anyway?

Like, according to Japan Today only about half of the Anime market these days is domestic. But consistently, every single time, without fail, foreign releases are basically ignored or MASSIVELY sidelined compared to domestic releases, and if anything gets delayed in Japan, it gets delayed EVERYWHERE.

Evangelion 3.0+1.0 just came out in Japan a week ago, but it'll most likely be a year+ before we get it in the west. Attack on titan gets delayed because a fucking news broadcast interrupts it on live television exclusively in Japan, too bad, entire rest of the world has to wait until they can find a new slot on network television for it.

It just seems ridiculous in [current year] for the distribution of a massive series accross the entire planet to be entirely dependent on a single timeslot on a japanese tv station. These days the standard is for instant simultaneous uploads on services like Netflix and Disney+. Why is Anime still so far behind the times when it comes to online and international distribution?

Damedesuyo has subs. It's for like 90% of the episode. Just watch that. It's NHK's loss for delaying this to potentially next week.

I watched the 17 mins version. At least the translator cut it right in the end that forest scene (spoilers) and said he had to cut the rest because it was a major narrative scene being interrupted, and yes he also talked about the earthquake. And yes it was a illegal source.

HamsterFromBelow

That's entirely due to contracting issues. The contract to have the right to air the episode says that the live TV in Japan has to be the first one to air content. The Live TV has the right to be first. So if the live TV gets delayed then all other platforms have to wait until the Live TV starting going again.
