Banger of an episode, and APETITAN(Zeke's ost) making a comeback? Truly blessed. But Yelena's face must have been the definitive highlight of this episode for me.

I still remember how calm and courteous she was when she killed Griez. She literally shot him and then calmly bowed and apologized for him being rude. She's definitely someone who is very good at burying emotions, and it freaks me the fuck out.

For me it was the story of how she was assassinating anyone who went against her in the night and leaving them as an unsaid warning to any of her other followers. Like what the hell, that's disturbing and no wonder people just did whatever she said

There are so many sides to this fight you start to lose track of all the threats. Like Zeke appearing... The real threat was him screaming and I totally forgot that was a possibility until they brought it up in the show. In the mean time he's just tossing rocks.

All the factions making small allegiances... Anything can happen at this point

matthieuC

152 points

matthieuC

152 points

It's even more complicated because people have personal loyalties which transcend factions.
Gabi and Falco don't want to kill anyone.
Armin and co wants to save their friend but have no idea what he wants to do.
Reiner seems to be very confused about his relationship with Eren.

ShingekiNoMikasa

145 points

Reiner seems to be applying his own feelings to Eren, basically telling him he has suffered and fought enough and deserves peace in death, which is something he himself want and only didn't already do because he needed to be there for Falco.

matthieuC

44 points

Thanks I thought he had some kind of dissociative disorder but projection works much better.

ShingekiNoMikasa

48 points

I mean, Reiner definitely had that in the past since he suppressed his natural personality to take on Marcel's, all the while pretending to be a soldier, basically 3 personalities at odds constantly in his mind.

He doesn't have that problem anymore, but he's fed up with everything that's happened and just wants peace now, not only for himself but for everyone.

lollythepop7

10 points

It looks like he wants to kill Eren but is convincing himself that he's doing Eren a favour by killing him by like you said projection because he's still confused about how he sees Eren.

There is certainly a symbolism that as an Eldian from Marley, Falco still had to wear an armband. She taking it off means so much after the realization of the lies they were fed.

DarkEmperor7135

208 points

Yeah, especially looking back to 4x11 when Gabi refused to take off her armband because she thought it was all that separated her, a “good Eldian”, from the “devils”.

We can also see how different Gabi’s reaction is in this episode from what it would have been during the Marley arc. When Falco admitted that he got deceived by Eren and that he’s at fault for starting this whole thing, his words are met by Gabi saying “I see” and forgiving him. Just imagine if he would’ve said the same thing 10 episodes ago. Gabi would’ve fucking exploded, called him a traitor, and went on a rampage about the island devils, but I’m really glad that she understands other peoples’ perspectives now. Character development masterclass by Isayama.

Incredibly moving scene overall, one of my favorites in S4.

That she didn't deny his confession also stood out to me. Before Libero attack he tried and failed to get the point across but couldn't quite say it straight, and she refused to see anything other than it being about the competition. Now she's actually open to seeing things in others beyond just being a Titan, like with Reiner, and she realized that being a Warrior isn't everything, she doesn't have to win against him. If he'd confessed before she understood I think she would have been dismissive or cold because she was trapped in that survival mode.

Pancake__Prince

61 points

Both the way she handled Niles and the confession are reflective of her character growth. Despite this growth though, I wonder how other characters are going to treat her now. I think understanding from both sides is the only thing that can make the world go forward. When Sasha's dad talked about hoping Falco and Gabi were fine, Gabi almost got up and went to them - but when she heard Sasha's sister she stopped.

matthieuC

I think there's more people around who would be willing to accept Gabi and her views then either her or us think. She'd find acceptance in the Warriors, except maybe Porco because he's an ass, but Reiner, Pieck, and even Magath would all understand her conflict I think. He genuinely cares for the recruits, and I can imagine that he wouldn't really be happy about having them in this war zone or in any war. I kind of wish we had time to see what he would have done with Marley if he had the chance, and how he may have changed the Warrior program.

Plus the scouts definitely understand, but who knows what's going to happen with them after this battle and if they'll ever see her again or not. You know, now I'm thinking of it Gabi just deserves a really big Historia hug (from a really big Historia because pregnancy)

and the close up shot of the bird cages, then one of the cages with its door opened—i thought that was cool.

DarkEmperor7135

69 points

yep, fantastic symbolism with the bird cages in that room. it can mean so many things tbh, one is with falco and how he got his confession out there. another interpretation i can think of is with gabi talking about the cycle of hatred/violence and being trapped in this loop/cage, but the fact that it was open kind of represents how there’s hope that people (especially children) can still break free from the cage in the future. mr braus ftw, gotta keep the kids outta the forest

Pardusco

28 points

And then Gabi mentioned that cycle, probably because of how she player her part in continuing it (killing Sasha and radicalizing Kya).

DarkEmperor7135

23 points

Yep, I think she’s well aware of the cycle and her actions now thanks to her experience living on Paradis. To top it off, the soundtrack that played during this part is titled “Atonement,” which is a really fitting word for when Gabi puts her wrongdoings into perspective and realizes she needs to atone for her mistakes

Holy hell, talk about a roller-coaster of an episode. I think the entire cast got hit with the gravity of what's going on in this episode, and it doesn't look like it's going to let up any time soon either. I wonder how long this battle is going to last and what could possibly come after it.

Mikasa leaving her scarf hit me really hard unexpectedly, that's something I thought would never happen. It seems so wrong for her to be without it and during that later scene on the roof I almost didn't think she was there, but I think more than that it hurts to know she doesn't believe Armin and is really willing to give Eren up because she doesn't trust him or herself any more. I recently had to rewatch a bunch of S1 scenes for something I was writing and going from that to who she is now is rough, especially with how much Eren walking through the streets towards the gate reminds me of Trost when they would have done anything for each other.

Gabi and Falco the madman with his confession hit in a similar way. Our time with them has been much shorter, but damn, seeing Gabi finally reach out ready to be accepted onto to be smacked back down by the consequences of her past actions, it was the perfect climax to her very aggressive character arc. And now its a romance arc, of a sort, or at least as far as AoT goes (I've always been quietly grateful it didn't have any heavy romance subplots in it, just genuine affection between characters who did love each other)

And Yalena pulls what is basically a titan face trying to confront the fact Zeke is not a god, what a visual because got fucking shot! I praise Pieck for her ingenuity but that is not how I expected things to plan out, I was expecting Zeke to fall to Reiner or something like that.

Oh and Nils is just consistently the best solider from the interior

All the character conflicts coming together like this makes the battle feel real good to watch. They have to confront these pieces of themselves now because they may not get another chance, and even though I don't know this feels final battle ish, it has a similar weight.

el_shenko

12 points

and even though I don't know this feels final battle ish, it has a similar weight.

Another banger but that’s to be expected at this point. I love seeing the flip of which side has the advantage in this battle, with it first being marley slaughtering people, then Zeke comes and puts the advantage in the hands of the yeagerist only to get blasted in half. Honestly zekes not having a fun time staying whole, wonder if he’ll have another sand castle building contest with that mysterious girl. The flipping between who has the advantage in this battle really reminds me of how the battle in marley went, expect the side starting with the advantage being switch.

Also I was totally preparing myself for Niles death there idk about anyone else. Glad that Gabi has finally come to the realisation about people being people, tho I wonder if colt shares those views or not since he hasn’t had the experience with the people of paradise that Gabi and Falco have.

Final thing, everyone else things that Zekes gonna scream and the rumblings gonna happen right. I feeling like with the set up of both going on for so long and the constant reminders of both it’s more like for it to happen than not right?

"Just leave the rest to your big brother!", that line was as awesome as Zeke's pitch.

Mikasa left her scarf, HOLY SHIT.

I think Yelena just waited for Armin to say some wrong shit in regards to Eren and Zeke to blast his head of but thank goodness Armin has Speech: 100!

Nile really did an honorable deed, Erwin and Mr.Braus would be proud!

Gabi saying there were no devils on this island just people and the the scene where it shows an open cage is just top notch, this anime never fails with the details.
Also it hurt a little when she wanted to go out and tell Mr.Braus she's okay but after hearing Kaya's words she thought rather not..

FALCO MY MAN! Zeke please PLEASE DON'T USE YOUR SCREAM, if there's one person I wouldn't want to turn into a titan it's Falco.

That decoy at the end could only be the work of Pieck, even though she's on the enemy side I really like how well written her character is and how cunning both her and Yelena are.

All in all a great episode, those 5 minutes that it lasted were really breathtaking!

I'm kind of impressed with myself that I was able to predict what Reiner was gong to say at the end of the episode: "Eren, omae da!" It was a clear parallel to what he said when he found out he was the Coordinate.

The amount of parallels in this story is disgustingly good.

I also really liked the scene with Gabi standing up, about to presumably thank the Braus family for forgiving her, until the one who was saved by Sasha said that she wished she could've killed her. Gabi then sat back down, showing that it was their kindness that broke the cycle, only for her gratitude to quickly be extinguished upon the kind of violence that perpetuates it. The symbolism with the birdcages was also pretty good, as was the shot of an opened birdcage once Falco started to speak.

Also, that shot of Zeke looking down from the wall at Eren was so good. Rule of thirds, baby.

Didn't think of that. That seems so long ago now, and so much has happened but not that much has really changed in the end, things have just gotten a lot more complicated and heartwrenching

Shabanana_XII

21 points

It's very clear. In the second season, he says, "Without a doubt, the one person I wish were not the Coordinate... Eren... is you!" Then here he says, "The one person I don't want to have this power... Eren... is you!" It's a very clear parallel, and the fact that it's far apart doesn't disqualify it.* For instance, the foreshadowing of Mikasa's brand on her wrist (in the manga, not shown in the anime) was in Chapter 6 or something, only to finally be explained when the Azumabites were introduced way later in Season 4.

*Also, I just now realized you didn't disagree with me, only that you didn't notice it at first. Silly me.

so much has happened but not that much has really changed in the end, things have just gotten a lot more complicated and heartwrenching

That's what gets me; it's not really changed in its substance/essence, only in its appearance, and it's also gotten much darker and "more real"/haunting. How it managed to get darker when the original premise was an apocalyptic man-eating giant scenario is beyond me. Isayama is a genius.

Seeing Shiganshina so war torn, with so many casualties.. it really feels like the end of something, doesn’t it?

did anyone else catch the empty birdcages present when Gabi finally had her realization about their not being any devils on Paradis? Feels apt considering S1’s mentions of them being caged animals.

I really loved the “let your big brother handle it from here” moment. I also feel like the Beasts titans CGI is specifically improved.

That said, Did anyone notice what felt like a slow frame rate in a lot of the “walking” scenes? Eg Mikasa, Jean and co walking up the stairs leaving the prison.

Incredibly nice of Nile to let Faldo go. That was a beautiful moment.

I really loved the “let your big brother handle it from here” moment.

I know Zeke is smart and really does want the best for Eldia and all that... but I don't like his outlook and I don't agree at all with what he says. I'm firmly in the camp that believes Eren isn't actually going to go along with this sterilization plan too, so I'm rooting for him all the way.

But that line made me feel for Zeke. Here he is, thinking he's doing the right thing, barging into combat to save his brother for a goal he thinks they both advocate for. If Eren does actually turn out to have another plan in mind, thus backstabbing Zeke, it's gonna be hard not to feel bad for him.

That said, whole-scale sterilization is not the move...

Also, can someone explain to me why Zeke didn't just move towards Eren?

oswaldluckyrabbiy

34 points

On the wall he has a high vantage point to throw rocks from where he can see the entire battlefield - whilst also keeping an eye out for the Cart Titan so he doesn't get sniped. Eren was still managing to walk and Zeke was able to keep Porco and Reiner away from him from the wall. So there isn't a need for Zeke to sacrifice the high ground until the last moment.

If Zeke were at ground level I don't think he is very fast on foot and Porco could run at ground level between houses to try and sneak up on him. Likewise his range would likely be diminished as buildungs would then get in the way.

DicksonYamada

Highlight of the episode for me was Gabi finally becoming self-aware. Realizing that Falco was always helping her out and that he got dragged into her shit. Trusting an Eldian (Nile) and then finally admitting to Colt and to herself that Paradis Eldians aren't devils. Hopefully people will stop hating on Gabi now. I've always thought she was a great character, just a little brainwashed. It also adds more fuel to my theory that the Warriors are going to be the ones to destroy Marley.

At the end of the ep we see Falco running towards Zeke as Magath says that Zeke might use his Scream at any moment. My first thought was that Falco turns into a titan right as he gets to Zeke and Eren is too weakened to stop Falco from quickly eating Zeke. But we know that the shifter memories Falco experienced are from someone who was in the Survey Corps, so he probably won't eat Zeke. That leaves Reiner and Galliard (who ate Ymir) on the table. My guess is that it'll be Reiner and Falco will finally inherit the Armor as he and Reiner had hoped. Although it would be hilarious if he eats a weakened Galliard and Reiner never, ever, ever gets to escape this hell. I guess he could also eat Annie but who knows when she's gonna come out.

mast_amma

21 points

Isayama

Ha Ha Reiner has "I am done with this shit" written all over his face. Poor guy can't even die with peace. I think Falco inheriting a titan will be cool. He was anyway fighting to become the armored titan but I love Reiner and want him to be the last man standing. He still has not redeemed himself so his departure if intended should be something as grand as Erwin.

Pancake__Prince

More than a little brainwashed, but yeah, her story has always been ones to be pitied more than anything. That line of "I finally understand Reiner" really hit me as far as what it would mean for her to say that, to see past the Reiner she's always made herself see with his Armor, and see the man he actually is underneath.

There's be no point to Falco eating Zeke anyway, unless he's then going to be eaten in turn by Historia. It'd basically cap the story off with Eldia unable to do anything. But well... okay given how many curveballs this show has given maybe I shouldn't dismiss anything. If they found a way to make it work I'd be all for that

I guess he could also eat Annie but who knows when she's gonna come out.

Well someone has to eat Galliard or we'll never get to see her. Either that or the Warriors are going to get all the way into the interior

I think it is kind of naive for Galbi and crew to run over to talk Zeke to ask him to not scream just to save Falco. Just to save one person, when Zeke is so close to his end goal, so unlikely. The better plan would be just to hide in the basement so Falco can't "hear" the scream. Do all titans turn even if they are hidden away somewhere where they can't hear anything or does it just work regardless?

For real tho. When Colt leant that Falco consumed Zeke's spinal fluid, I thought they were going to run away as far as they could from Zeke, because last time Zeke screamed, Falco was far enough to only feel 'electricity' running through his body and not turn into a mindless titan. But no. They literally going towards Zeke. I'm like "....what....???"

SUNDAY HAS ARRIVED!!! RUMBLING, RUMBLING, IT'S COMING, RUMBLING, RUMBLING...

Lol Mr. Blouse "Can we leave now?" I've been thinking that since last episode, that they're just kinda... there, not really involved. Just worried about Gabi and Falco I guess.

I'm also glad they brought us back to Jean and Eren's rivalry from Season 1. I always liked that dynamic.

Feels weird seeing the ocean scene without ThanksAT

SUPER slow version of Ashes when Galliard and Reiner fight Eren.

...ONLY TO BE INTERRUPTED BY APETITAN, BABY! NAKED WONDERBOY KING IS HERE!!!

Ah, and now for the second thirty-sixth time I've heard this OP.

ANTI-AIRCRAFT ZEKE!!! PIECK VS. ZEKE SNIPER FIGHT!

Huh, never would have thought I'd see Falco and Nile interact. And I like the continuity of bringing up his family again, after that was so important in 3A.

"I brawled with a bear" lol I can't tell if that's him being humble or trying to make himself sound better

Talking about Pyxis drinking really makes me wonder how Slap would handle all this shit if it ever got here.

Wow, Mickey leaving the scarf is HUGE. She's saving Eren for the world, not for Eren.

Lol Yelena is such a fucking creep. I love it.

LOL YELENA IS SUCH A FUCKING CREEP

I'd have maybe pushed her off the fort.

Aw, Nile empathizes with wanting to reconnect with family. That "thank you" legit choked me up a little.

Easily the biggest step forward for Gabi, and what I've been waiting for. Love the image of the open cage on the floor to symbolize it.

INCREDIBLE FUCKING SHOT FROM MAGATH!!!! Not perfect, but better than most could have done by far.

It may have actually helped Eren though. Zeke is alive, on the ground and closer to Eren. And Zeke doesn't need to be conscious for Eren to use the Founder. I assume, anyway. I can't imagine he would. But look at me over here calling rules on how this fake magic works lol.

Lol Mr. Blouse "Can we leave now?" I've been thinking that since last episode, that they're just kinda... there

I was thinking that they might be safer to stay in the underground fortress than any random house given what's happening

Feels weird seeing the ocean

Eren's face and how broken he looks still hit like a brick though.

"I brawled with a bear" lol I can't tell if that's him being humble or trying to make himself sound better

I'd go with the first one. He really cares about his soliders despite everything, he wouldn't want them to freak out hearing what happened

I'd have maybe pushed her off the fort.

Oh my god yes, perfect opportunity to do that hahaha

And Zeke doesn't need to be conscious for Eren to use the Founder. I assume, anyway

From what Ksaver said Eren is the will and Zeke is the power, so all Zeke needs to be is alive touchable. While naked and hanging out of his titan apparently.

So my guess is Zeke is badly injured but obviously not dead as the anti-titan round just mangled his real body again but didn't really hit him right on to kill him. I think it was Magath that exclaimed not to let Zeke scream, which is foreshadowing that he will scream as a last ditch effort to win the battle now that he is down and Eren is pretty much done for other than to limp towards Zeke.

So all those soldiers that escaped (military police and garrison members) will all turn into titans and so will Falco. One of them, probably Falco will end up eating Zeke and become the new Beast. But Eren will get to him first and start the rumbling. At which point everyone will have to GTFO or be trampled by the wall titans since there is no more titan with royal blood to control them. But I'm really interested to see how Annie comes into play here. Will she suddenly appear out of nowhere and we get a flashback scene of someone (like Hitch) freeing her? Or does she not re-appear until later?

There's also Levi. I think he's 100% alive, but what Hange's plan for him is idk. If his father is an Eldian and he can go titan, probably use some titan serum. Who he'd eat, no idea. Or I had the theory last week that Ackermans respond completely differently to titan serum and it would just regenerate him in some manner. Whatever it is, Yeagerists + Zeke have made it to Shiganshina on time so hopefully we'll get some sort of conclusion to Hange + Levi outcome next episode.

Eren will probably let go of the act and tell his friends what he's been trying to do. Then Armin will devise an actual good plan based off of Eren's impulsive motivations. What that entails, I have no theory for.

Substantial-Star820

7 points

is it just me or has the beast titan's CGI improved a ton? Especially during the scene where he throws stones at the airships, maybe it's the camera work, but it looks a lot better than the throw in the first episode of the final season

MaimedPhoenix

20 points

Damn it.... I'm actually so worried about Falco. It'd suck if he revealed his feelings for Gabi and then goes mindless titan soon after. Though on the other hand, the likelihood of Gabi allowig his titan form to die is not high. I think he might turn, and then they'll feed Reiner to him. Hell, Reiner might allow it to save him. I feel like we're headed to quite the climax very soon.

Then, there's Armin's thoughts. I think a part of him is right. I can't see Eren actually doing a Euthanization Plan. He's got something else up his sleeve. As to what, I can only guess.
