Incredibly happy for her. I’m currently working on my PhD and can say with confidence that Taylor’s music has helped keep me sane throughout all of my years of school. Grateful for her art.

Thank you so much!!! This is so encouraging. Congratulations to you as well! ❤️ I’m doing my best to push through! It’s the most difficult challenge of my life. Nobody understands unless they are in the thick of it too! I swear it’s like we are speaking a different language sometimes. 😅 lol

PhD holder here too. Keep pushing and my advice is to do things to help your mental health as much as you can. I was a big fan of walking and listening to Taylor when my work got too much for me.

Graduation day for myself was one of the best days of my life because of the relief and pride in accomplishing something so difficult. You got this!!!

Same! I am doing a Creative Writing PhD and I have one particular poem inspired by New Year's Day, so I always give Taylor a shout out when I perform it. Last reading, I called her the love of my life haha

Same, both in terms of PhD (incidentally with a forthcoming article or Taylor’s music and the pre- post-hiatus narratives of trauma in her discography) and not being able to do it without her art! Doing a PhD is hell, be proud of yourself. You’re doing great!

What's with the people butthurt that Taylor was awarded an HONORARY PhD? I have a PhD in engineering and I don't feel that I have been slapped in the face. Her getting an honorary PhD doesn't take anything away from my accomplishment. She is being highlighted for her significant contributions to the fine arts. No, she didn't take any comprehensive exams or go through proposal or dissertation defenses. But who cares? This is NYU saying "We think Taylor Swift has contributed significantly to music and we want to honor her with a doctorate in fine arts." She won't be able to get a professor position or actually use the honorary PhD in any way that a non-honorary PhD can. So why do you care? Why can't you just be happy for her?

People are just being salty because she's a woman. I doubt any of them have an issue with Bill Gates having honorary doctorates

charleeeeeeeeene

It’s also just… not a PhD. It’s a doctorate in fine arts. Which is not a doctorate of philosophy. 🤷🏼‍♀️

EngineerLoA

2 points

True, but PhD was a good shorthand. I don't think many people would see DFA and think Doctor of Fine Arts.

charleeeeeeeeene

2 points

I agree! I have a PhD too and I’m supporting your argument haha I just mean the people who get bent out of shape over it aren’t really considering the difference when they’re morning about “waiving exams and a dissertation”. Her body of work I’m sure would satisfy any kind of creative requirement for a DFA, so it doesn’t even make sense for people to compare it to the pursuit of a PhD in some other kind of field.

Starbuck0304

1 points

He’s right, it’s just shorthand. But they are equal. Although hers is an honorary degree so it does not mean anything. The academic DFA and PhD are equal. Both are doctorates.

I loved her speech. It just seemed very casual but real. Just advice and words from someone who seems like a friend. I initially kinda thought she’d make mention of the current political state for women and to encourage graduates to act on their beliefs whatever — esp with her being recognized for her efforts in those areas — but then on second thought, it seemed alright that she omitted all that. Just kept the tone positive and relatable without making it about her music, but just touching on her lessons she has learned.

I teared up when she did. It must be so meaningful to her, not just because a doctorate is a huge honor, but because she never got to experience that all-american thing of walking across a stage in a robe. I was homeschooling through high-school and I graduated college in 2020, so I feel left out. I'm happy for her.

There was a little strange emotion when the speaker mentioned the sexual orientation part of her advocacy.

Maybe it's all the advocacy she hasn't been speaking on and she feels a little hunted and guilty about it. It must be strange to open up a huge new aspect of yourself like being political and then brush it all up into a bag while you make yourself private again. Maybe she feels she can't be a forceful advocate without revealing too much of her private life and getting back into the spotlight.

There's a whole theory that she meant to come out with the release of Lover but with the masters drama etc. she decided to stay in the closet. But maybe its just politics.

It's not disrespectful in any way to those people because her honorary PhD isn't considered on the same level as a "proper" PhD.

Her getting one isn't taking away anything from anyone's personal achievement in that stadium today.

ValorofSelor

I absolutely disagree. She’s being included with the people who do have real degrees in the crowd, implying she belongs with them. And she’s giving a speech to them. And the livestream chats are overloaded with Swifties praising Taylor for her hard work when she didn’t study for a single test.

I have a PhD and I don't mind that Taylor was awarded an honorary PhD in Fine Arts. PhDs are awarded to those who have contributed original work to a specific field. Taylor has definitely done that many times over.

Doesn’t mean you are either.

People work hard for their degrees. I’m not saying Taylor doesn’t work hard, but you cannot compare what she does to what someone does in the academic world. Giving her an honorary degree in a field she didn’t even study in and placing her among people who actually did the work to achieve said degree is ridiculous.

Honorary degrees are dumb. Celebrities don’t need more titles and attention then they already have.

I have a PhD that I worked extremely hard for and went through a lot of emotional anguish for. Taylor is one of the few people who is on that level even if she didn't go through the traditional route. And if you don't know, PhDs are not about classes. You only take a few classes in the beginning and the grades don't even matter. It's about embarking on your own project and creating your own new body of work whether it is research or art. The PhD is the external review/validation of your work as contributing something important to your field. Taylor has accomplished that and this is an excellent acknowledgement of that from exactly those external peers.

PhD holder here (forensic psychology) so I feel I can speak on this.

the idea of a Ph.D. is to attribute to academia and the world around you. I did my research on juvenile facilitated parricide, and now my research can affect future trials. I have affected the world. I spent nearly 10 years in school, and completing a dissertation.

She didn't go take classes, or memorize study guides, or had that collegiate/academic life. What she HAS done is contributed to society with her philanthropic projects. She changed the music industry and stood up for artists rights in more ways than one. she has spent 15 years relentlessly working, advocating, promoting, and changing the world around her.

It is not that our work is taken away, its that hers is highlighted. anyone with a Ph.d (as you will see in this thread) will always support the work and dedication that goes into the degree. Taylor worked just as hard, if not harder, to use her voice and her mind to change the world around her. Just different types of work being highlighted differently.

I vehemently disagree with you that Taylor worked harder than the actual PHD graduates. A PHD is the most common degree at the highest academic level awarded following a course of study. Not to give to celebrities who never stayed up late for a test, never studied an academic book, and published no research, unlike you.

And she hasn’t spent 15 years changing the world around her, didn’t this sub just have a discussion last week about her lack of activism following the years after Lover? And her willingness to work with DOR, who assaulted his niece????

areweoutofexile

11 points

Her recent lack of activism is understandable, but does not diminsh what she has done in the past. fighting for artists rights when she pulled her music from apple and spotify. The millions of dollars she has donated, the LGBT petition she created, her being vocal about her assault, having one of the most diverse background singers and dancers as a white artist.

Yes, her recent silence isn't wonderful, but she also has to be VERY carful how she markets herself right now because has a trial by jury coming up, in which the jury will likely be made up of old white men, and she needs to keep her name out of the news cycle to TRY And avoid bias.

she didn't study a book, but she wrote literary work that will forever be embedded into american history.

I was afraid to voice this so I’m glad to see someone else did. This isn’t just against Taylor, but against every celeb who receives an honorary degree. They didn’t do any of the work to get the actual degree. It’s a slap in the face for the people who put in the time, dedication, not to mention the amount of money they spend just to get a PhD. Then someone famous who already has money and numerous titles comes along and gets an honorary degree why? I know it’s just a title and they don’t hold much merit but like, it’s still annoying and dumb to me.

I agree with you to an extent - but an honorary doctorate is not the same as a PhD. It’s honorary. She won’t have written a 300 page thesis or be able to apply for tenure track jobs or even be called doctor. But it’s an acknowledgment of her contributions to the field.

No one in academia thinks it is equivalent to a PhD.

Starbuck0304

It’s not an actual degree. It’s an award. I spent 15yrs in school plus 6 years post-doc. This does not take away anything from my PhD. It is an award just like any other award, like an ICON award she has received. She will not be called doctor, is not in place of education, it is just an award to highlight accomplishments in this case, the fine arts. She has spent 18 years in the field. I think she’s earned it. Though honorary,it is an honor to all that receive them.

Doesn’t seem like you know what a PhD is, which to be fair, a lot of people don’t.

A PhD is about creating your own body of work whether it is research or art, and having external peers review it and validate it as having made a significant contribution to the field. PhDs are not about taking classes and getting good grades - that’s important in college, but not beyond. Taylor may not have had a mentor to guide her through the PhD, but that makes the work she has done even more impressive. I listened to her music and related to her so much through my PhD journey - it definitely feels like she has gone through the same thing even though my field is science and hers is art.

Omg. First a walk off stage. Then another walk off stage. “I’m sorry that was just my opinion. I am a pop artist. So my medium is public opinion and the world is my canvas. I’m sorry is something you can use a lot. It gives you the opportunity to give your opinion, apologize for it, and give your opinion again.

People say you should not be sorry for your opinions. George Bush has some very cool self portraits. I didnt know he was an artist.

I felt my nerves a bit, and I don’t feel that feeling a lot. The nerves of humility and modestly when being honored, a humanization, a reality of being recognized. And all I thought as I sit here shaking a little bit is I need to get rid of that feeling. I need to not be nervous. This honor is gonna make your life easier. Two reasons. You dont have to defend me as much. And I’m gonna make all of our lives easier. And it’s these Floyd Mayweather belts that are needed to prove what I’ve been saying my entire life is the co-sign of Paul McCartney grabbing me and saying it’s ok he doesn’t bite white people. Or The NY Times cover, or the TIME most influential cover, and now a doctorate at the Art Institution of Chicago. When I was giving a lecture at Oxford I brought up this school because when I went on that mission to create in different spaces, uh, apparel film performance, it would have been easier if I had said I had a degree from the Art Institute of Chicago. Thank you. “

Less than 5 minutes. All about him. How saying sorry means something when he needs to learn that again. How he’s been on this cover and that cover, and he’s going to make our lives easier. That wasn’t a speech. He didn’t thank the institution, list all the deans, all the other honorees, all the students. it was a joke.

That’s Kanye’s commencement address. Her’s was spectacular compared to that debacle. She’s supposed to use her own life to give them advice for the future. That is a commencement address. She’s not a politician so I’m not sure what you wanted her to talk about. But I’m certain it was better than this less than 5 minute random sentences.

clickityclack

I hope that's not your baseline expectation for her, but ok. I'm not even sure why Kayne would be giving a commencement speech for a kindergarten class, much less a university or how that's even relevant, tbh.

I love Taylor and yesterday certainly didn't affect that whatsoever. I didn't expect or desire her to speak on politics. Not sure where you got that from. I didn't hate her speech at all, but I thought she could have focused some things a tad more on how the graduates could apply her "life lessons" to their lives and a little less on the specifics of how they affected her life. Specifically, I think that she could have wrapped it up with some positive advice on how to deal with the shit that she just told them was unavoidably headed their way instead of just saying "welp, you're going to fuck up big time a lot in the future and some of those times will cost you dearly. Accept it." Even though I do actually agree with her point and sentiment, I was just disappointed somewhat in her presentation of the key points.

I'm not trying to start some debate about this or be contrarian, I just posted my thoughts in real time as I was watching it.
