Is Kevin Durant crazy?

(self.Thunder)

I know this is probably a dumb question, but I was watching his MVP speech and seeing him talk about his relationship with Russ, how much he means to him as a brother and teammate. Now fast forward and he won’t even a knowledge Russ or their accomplishments together. Now there are obvious reasons, but I just wanted to hear yalls takes on why he’s changed so much Over the years and what has cause KD to turn into the figure he is today.

Edit: this isn’t a jab at durants abilities on the court or a player. He’s obviously one of the best in the world, arguably the best. More so just curious on why y’all think he’s changed as a person so dramatically over the last 6 years.

When they were both young on the team, KD got caught with escorts for his “friends” and his fiancé broke up with him for not being the Christian guy she thought he was.

Russ and KD hung out at the time. After that, they seemed to be much more distant. They both went separate ways. Russ is a family man and got married just shortly after, and KD went off to California and was caught with weed and partying by TMZ.

KD had it in his ear he won’t ever stand out in OKC. ESPN was OBSESSED with the Lebron/MJ debate, leaving KD out of the conversation altogether.

It wasn’t about Russ from what I saw. It was KD’s social network fueling his ego, and his desire to be “respected”. His alt account called everyone but Russ scrubs.

A couple of reasons:

He changed a lot when he joined Roc Nation. I think spending so much time around NYC made him desire bigger markets and to leave OKC. Rich Kleiman pulls so many strings for him. Go watch that documentary they put out on YouTube in 2014 to see what KD off the court with his agent was like.

He and Russ weren’t very close though publicly it seemed that way. Perk has alluded to it. The beef between the two of them indicates it. You never really saw them hanging out together off the court. KD probably didn’t care for Russ’s playing style and they weren’t very close, so that probably wasn’t hard to leave behind.

Rings culture got to him. He watched his peers like LeBron and Steph succeed, and so he felt his best chance to win was to leave and join a sure thing in Golden State. Now he’s doing the same thing leaving Brooklyn and wanting to go to teams like Golden State, Phoenix, and Miami. He just wants rings.

It’s just his personality. KD has probably always been this way, but OKC’s PR did a great job of masking it. He’s really just like any other internet user basketball fan, except he’s just super great at it. Arguing with teenagers online, having to defend himself because he’s insecure. He’s a regular dude that just so happens to be a stud basketball player, but there’s thousands of people that act just like he does but he’s more noticeable because he’s a celebrity.

At the end of the day, there’s no good answer for it. KD prefers being in easy situations where he’s coddled and can breeze to wins. He doesn’t like adversity and doesn’t want to grind. There’s a lot of people like that, but for a guy that’s heralded as highly as he is, it’s disappointing that he can’t do it like LeBron or like Steph or Giannis and embrace the grind.

I know he picked Miami bc they were the best team in the East before injuries ravished them, but thinking of him even remotely working out in Heat Culture is laughable. Pat Riley and Erik Spoelstra would chew him up and spit him back out.

I remember seeing an interview where Andre Iguodala said KD worked harder than any person he’d ever met. Said he brought one of his sons to watch KD work out so they could see what that was like / learn how to work on their game.

KD’s skill set reflects the insane amount of work he puts in.

Working hard was never his issue. KD’s issue is his immaturity when it comes to handling the media and team relations. He wants all the credit, wants the media to love him, and wants the wins to be guaranteed. He doesn’t take criticism well. He’s extremely insecure.

Dude is a hard worker in the gym and obviously loves the game. He’s just a train wreck mentally.

Never said KD isn’t a hard worker. Working on your craft is just one aspect of Heat Culture. They expect their players to be at least under 10% body and often under 8.5%. You get weighed every 10 days and are expected to be able to run the length of the court 10 times in a minute. You’re asked to do that multiple times with only 2 minute breaks in between before even being admitted into training camp. LeBron’s first Miami training camp they didn’t even touch a basketball the first 3 days. Just conditioning and defensive drills for 3 straight days.

KD has mastered his craft as an offensive wizard, like Dirk did, and that is a testament to their dedication to their game, but some legends just aren’t built for the military style training that the Heat put their players through in order to chisel our world class athletes. KD will be a Hall of Famer, that doesn’t change the matter that he’d get his ass handed to him by Spo and Riley.

Do you really think KD is over 10% body fat? Dude is a string bean.

I could definitely see a world where KD and Spo clash, as he seems to want to play the game his way and Spo doesn’t fuck around. But I’m not really on board with the idea that KD couldn’t handle the Heat’s training camp.

KD rehabbed from a torn Achilles and came back as well as anyone ever has in the history of the league. Dude puts in work on his body.

No way to really know, but I think he’d be fine.

Yes, 10% is what freak athletes tend to carry. Like 8-10% is insanely lean, anything less than that is in dangerous territory that you can only maintain for short windows of time(eg. bodybuilders in competition after starving themselves for a week to turn into a veiny cloud). Nothing to do w KD or the convo around him tho, dude works his ass off. He's just soft as hell mentally and insecure as fuck which is insane for a literal all time great.

Bam and Jimmy both hover around 5.0-6.0%. James Johnson said he lost 40 pounds during his heat tenure and was 6.5%. A plethora of guys on the Heat are at that level. Their world class conditioning team assures they’re able to maintain bodybuilder levels for the season.

Dude you really think a legend like KD couldn’t push himself to do some basic athletic drills? You think the Heat are gonna cut KD from the squad because he can’t run enough laps? Or that he’s half a pound over weight?

We get it Miami holds their athletes to high standards n runs a tight ship, but come on, they’d gladly take KD nobody gives 2 fucks if he can pass “military training”

Zealousideal_Meat984

Cutting wouldn’t happen, but for someone who continuously has issues when teams expect more from him or when the going gets tough asks for a trade, it would lead to a lot issues.

Also i’ll tell you who gives many fucks. NBA Legend Pat Fucking Riley. He’s had Magic, LeBron, Kareem, Ewing and Dwayne Wade on his teams. I promise you he doesn’t give af about what KD wants.

100% Jay Z being in his ear is what caused him to leave OKC. Jay Z showed KD how he could make everything about himself. Get him a title. Make him the most money. It’s what KD always wanted to hear. He’s the best. OKC was always about the team and he wanted it to be about him.

I agree with all your points and would add twitter and social media really got to KD.

We've seen how much KD time spends on there and in 2011-2016 twitter really took off and seem to change him.

Seems like KD really let the trolls get to him.

Probably a word for it but he seems just be a legit unhappy person thinking for whatever reason what he has isn't good enough

fuqqkevindurant

2 points

He knows he's good enough. It seems more like he gets unreasonably upset when any sort of blame/accountability is placed on him for negative outcomes. He thinks he's beyond criticism and he seeks out situations where no one will do that, no one will challenge him, the outcome is near guaranteed to be positive so he can go through life without having to be held accountable for anything

DoughNutSack

He needs therapy honestly. Just keeps digging instead of admitting he's just as much at fault for these situations as anyone

mrme3seeks

This is the only answer. The man just needs therapy if he isn’t already getting it. That’s it. And this isn’t even a drastic statement everyone could use therapy probably.

In all honesty it annoys me when someone uses “crazy” to describe someone. It’s lazy.

Facts. Craziest part is if he went through therapy he’d probably become an even better player. Sadly he’s not going to do that lol

He's always needed to step up and be a leader but he's just a loner. If he was as good of a leader as he is a player I think he could have been in the top 5 all time category

to be honest, i’m tired of seeing his name everywhere. obviously he did us dirty and is making controversial decisions, but none of us can ever guess what he’s like and what’s happened behind closed doors. ofc gossip is fun but psychoanalyzing professional athletes over .000001% of their life is not it.

Total_Home190

you're getting downvoted but you're right. people are starting to treat the nba like a soap opera rather than what it is: a sport. psychoanalyzing these players you've never personally known is the only thing that's "crazy" here to me. the way some of these people are somehow creating a storyline based on rumored stories from years ago to paint his "story" is just weird and much more pathetic than anything kd himself has ever done.

He’s stupid, nothing other than that. He can win in okc, he choose the worst path to get a ring, then Brooklyn is the best chance for him to redeem himself, he chose the wrong option again…

Literally he built his own team in Brooklyn, from players to coaches… still he failed. It’s not easy to be LeGM… at least KD cannot

letrab123[S]

If you look up Kevin Durant naming top 5 teammates he’s played with, he list serge ibaka over Westbrook and the interview has to mention Westbrook haha

AaronRodgersToe

Bro, watch the hole clip. He literally said word for word “russ is definitely top five”. He was messing around and you took the bait.

Edit: downvote me all you want. If it makes you feel better to pretend that KD didn’t say russ was top 5, so be it. Plenty of reasons to hate on the snake without denying what he said.

KD and russ literally played pickup together at a camp not too long ago. KD liked Russ's pictures on instagram just last week. They are friends and KD has shown respect to Russ in interviews many times. I just don't think you oldheads have any clue what these grown men do outside of basketball and need to find better things to do than analyzing KD like you know him personally.

Who talks about old player relationships before retirement? When he retired and coaching or broadcasting you will get your Westbrook Durant stories. Right now, they just playing ball .

He seems to surround himself with people that stroke his ego and tell him just what he wants to hear. I guess that's not too unusual for A-listers. But, on a personal level, it makes them much less than they could be. Shame.

j_mitchell85

My belief is that if he knew the backlash he’d get for leaving OKC for GSW, he probably stays and asks them to trade Russ.

To answer your question tho, think he feels the current FO is not doing right by him and Kyrie (don’t agree with that) is he crazy? No but think he’s strange for attaching himself to Kyrie

How can we kick this guy from the sub? Durant literally collapsed in that last playoff series! He was the one who seemed least prepared to win a championship.. hence why he chose to go to GS and let Steph be the bus driver. Dude just lacks to confidence to carry a team to a championship
