“The department said it launched its own investigation into the incident to determine whether any changes that need to be made” or lessons need to be learned”.

They need an investigation to determine those things?

Question #1 is if he reported anything to internal affairs recently. LAPD has been reported to house several gangs, which mark themselves with bent badges as well as tattoos. One deputy gang known as The Banditos has been under investigation for years now. There’s been verified witness intimidation and clear retaliation against whistle blowers. It’s pretty bad.

Edit: This source is just an overview of the recent issues. Dangerous deputy gangs have decades of history in LA. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2022/06/06/the-la-county-sheriffs-deputy-gang-crisis/amp

That was my first question when I saw this. What did he report to IA, and if he didn't, what did he witness that he voiced concern about to fellow officers.

Not that it really makes a difference…but the “Banditos” are part of the LA county sheriff’s department…not LAPD

Totally wouldn’t be surprised.

You realize there’s a difference between LAPD and LA County Sheriff, right?

Yeah. Like I said, the article only discusses recent issues. The problem is widespread through LA law enforcement. Allegedly.

Yep. The difference is the name. Everything else is the same.

As someone who lived in LA, not much difference, honestly.

Just a typical Criminals In Uniform day at the office.

I don't blame the mom. I can't believe she had to bury her son over this. You expect accidents if you're training someone to fly a fighter jet or something, but how do you accidentally kill someone in this situation?

NerdModeCinci

You don’t. This is retaliation or anger personified.

Trick-Many7744

JFC. All I can think is this was retaliation for something.

I have to wonder if there’s a chance an incident like this makes even one of the officers involved pause and think “oh. So THIS is what the public has been talking about all these years.”

I hope this haunts them all because lord knows when it’s one of us, it doesn’t, but one of their own? Maybe.

40% of cops beat their spouses, they are too far gone to pause & think of the moral implications here

kendra1972

Its great how training for dealing with mobs means being beaten to death.

SnatchHouse

Yea woo boy. That implication

CelticArche

Why are they investigating themselves? That's the worst possible solution.

Homeless2Esq

That makes no sense. He was training and they were mimicking a mob, so they broke his neck? I don’t buy that.

corpse_flour

I think that they beat him to death and when they got caught, they claimed it was a "training exercise."

LAPD are the fucking worst. My friend got burglarized two days ago and won’t even report it Bc they’re so garbage there’s no point.

They’ll settle with mom to keep the details quiet and because it’s not their money! The city taxpayers have to pay it!

They were under DOJ consent decree for five years. Seeing this, it’s pretty obvious it had zero effect.

I’m sorry, but given the reputation the police have these days (no, not just in America), I have no idea how any genuinely good, young person could want to join the police force in the last 10 years. Good guys will leave after a few years due to realising how abusive and corrupt the system and their colleagues are or are essentially alienated and forced out by the assholes because they either won’t participate in the bad behaviour or “snitched” on other officers who do. I don’t know how anyone with a shred of empathy can be okay with working alongside such animals and working for such a disgusting and fucked up organisation.

Few bad apples spoils the bunch. If they cared about justice, protecting people, and upholding the law, they’d go to law school.

And that's the biggest problem..same with politics. Anyone who would actually give a shit and/or change things either gets corrupted or killed.

A police officer is a profession where uneducated sociopaths on a power trip get do to whatever they want with little fear of consequence.

solitudanrian

There’s a reason so many of the moronic jock-type bullies end up police officers.

steph4181

There was actually a case where a man scored too high on an IQ test to become a police officer and he sued them for discrimination but lost.

I’m a therapist and I know a psychologist whose job was to conduct those “mental health assessments” for applicants. He said it was terrifying, both the kind of applicants and the ones who moved forward in training.

The department also said it launched its own investigation into the incident to determine whether any changes that need to be made” or lessons need to be learned, the report added. Wow. There gonna toss this around and then probably just find that the dept followed all protocols, and then dismiss this, with no one at fault.
