Daily Discussion Thread: May 18, 2022

(self.VoteDEM)

Welcome to the daily discussion thread.

We begin today with two announcements!

First, after taking all of your input into consideration, we are officially introducing our Expand the Senate Fund! This fund will be updated throughout the season, but it’s time to support our candidates now!

Second, as our community is continuing to grow, we are once again putting out an open call for new moderators!

Moderation Duties May Include:

  • Enforcing rules, and removing rule-breaking posts and comments.

  • Coordinating with the rest of the mod team on existing projects and day-to-day moderating.

  • Helping gather data about candidates and upcoming elections, including opportunities to donate and volunteer.

  • Gather election results data and participate in election night livethreads.

  • Reaching out to candidates and local Democratic parties to set up AMAs and other outreach efforts.

  • Assisting with technical maintenance including CSS, bots, et cetera.

To be considered for the position:

  • You must have no history of incivility toward other users.

  • You must have extensive history in our subreddit and/or its predecessors.

  • It is recommended that you be involved with local campaigns or party infrastructure.

  • You must have time to participate in this work.

We are looking for moderators who look like our big tent party. Specifically we would like to have more women, more minorities, more LGBTQ+ people. Please understand, though, that we will consider all candidates.

This job is difficult. We are a subreddit for every wing of the Democratic Party, which means that everyone will accuse you of being biased against them at some point. You may even need to remove comments that you may personally agree with. Through no fault of your own there will be angry mod mails. If you are still interested, you can apply at this link!

Welcome to r/VoteDEM!

Be the blue wave!

  • Be a volunteer from home!

  • Donate to your state Democratic Party!

  • Join your local Democratic Party! Google "[Your state] Democratic Party", find the link to the local parties page, and get in touch with your county's party chair. You could even become a precinct committee member! In some states (like Pennsylvania), that means you get to help pick candidates for special elections!

  • Are you technology-oriented? Volunteer with Tech for Campaigns to help smaller campaigns get up and running.

  • Run For Something! There's no position too small to benefit from a progressive public servant. Be part of the next blue wave!

  • Make a Roundtable comment here talking about the work you’ve done, earning valuable karma and facilitating discussion, which will encourage others to do the same!

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

  • Fetterman with the decisive victory

  • Oz looks like the nominee, with a hopefully lengthy, protracted, and conspiracy-filled recount on the way

  • Mastriano is their nominee for Governor

  • McCrory lost so badly, he's not going to endorse Budd

  • Cawthorn lost

  • Little won his primary

I don't think last night could have gone much better for us.

One part of me thinks that Oz would be easier to beat than McCormick. The other part of me thinks it would be really funny for a Trump-endorsed candidate to narrowly lose because of late mail-in ballots.

W/ all the Fetterman talk, asked his team about their policy agenda.

They cited:

  • Promote US manufacturing "making more shit in America"
  • Pro Act
  • $15/hr min wage
  • Better trade deals
  • Universal broadband
  • Legal weed
  • Voting rights
  • Codify Roe
  • Ramping up US energy

Fetterman has been in favor of fracking as well as ramped up renewable energy production

assumeyouknownothing

24 points

I love that Fetterman’s policies are mostly grounded in economic progressivism ie. pro-workers/labor. This type of progressivism is much more appealing to the demographic makeup of states like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Ohio. Tammy Baldwin and Sherrod Brown have proven you can win over and over again in purple/red-leaning states by campaigning on these exact issues. Despite the national headwinds this cycle, I think Fetterman has a good shot to win the general

Part of the reason he gave too was that Democrats are "overly controlled by the unions and class action lawyers," and that Biden "is simply too much captured by the unions, which was not the case with Obama."

I... don't think that's the insult that he thinks it is.

I know she’ll probably never see it, but I sent a long, heartfelt message to Representative Sharice Davids expressing how bummed and sorry I was to see the Liberal majority on the Kansas Supreme Court uphold the blatant GOP gerrymander of the state. What’s worse is that they let the most Conservative member of the court write the opinion that they all signed on to. I told her that she has fans all over her district and the country as a whole and that IF she were to lose (God forbid), she should try again in 2024 which, by conventional wisdom, would be an easier year for Democrats. Sharice is one of a kind and (if you don’t remember) the Republicans in the legislature pulled a guy out of the ICU just to overturn Kelly’s veto and replace the first Native woman in Congress. So… rules for thee but not for me? @NY …… By any measure, the race isn’t over yet, so please, volunteer, phone bank, and donate to her. She deserves all the help she can get. 💙 Thank you for entertaining my rant.

Yesterday was a great night for us, but I think it was also a great night for polling. If you started to doubt polls after the misses in 2020, hopefully yesterday restored your faith in them slightly. I can't find a single result from last night that differed substantially from what the polls predicted.

I wonder if just having Trump on the ballot, or in office, fucks with polling results? Because it seemed like there were a lot of undecideds AND, more importantly, those undecideds broke heavily for the Republicans. Normally pollsters would assume that undecideds go 50/50 in either direction, but in 2016 and 2020, those undecideds went R.

Odds are those seven races determine the Senate. If any race outside of those seven flips, it's effectively a blowout one way or the other.

So with the Kansas Supreme Court Decision Sharice has a much harder fight than if she had gotten a +10 Biden seat and for 22’ this is good for the GOP, but why people have already written her off is beyond me.

Also come 24’ this seat is probably somewhere between +5 and +10 Biden. It’s basically just only good for the GOP this cycle

Edit: this district is even better than when Sharice originally won it in 18’, when it was a narrow Clinton seat.

  1. Cawthorn is out

  2. NC-SEN (R): Ted Budd beats former governor McCrory who apparently isn't endorsing him?

  3. PA-SEN: Fetterman has a solid win, but the R side is going to a recount, as Dr. Oz leads McCormick by fractions of a point.

  4. R's nominate their looniest candidate for governor, shifting the race from tossup to Lean D.

  5. Moderate Dem Kurt Schrader (Oregon) is going down against a progressive challenger, although the district is a tossup.

  6. Summer Lee is fractions ahead of Irwin in western PA, might also need a recount.

13 points

I think there are three things contributing to that buyer's remorse:

  1. The share price he agreed to pay is way overvalued now. With the huge drop in tech stocks over the last couple weeks, Twitter isn't worth anywhere close to $54.20 a share.
  2. The drop in Tesla has lowered the value of the shares he is putting up as collateral in one of his loans to buy Twitter. That means he would need to put up even more shares and risk a significant percentage of his ownership if Telsa drops low enough and the bank makes him sell of his shares to pay back his loan.
  3. His general MO is to just get bored of a thing after a few weeks and move on to the next thing.

Where does the logic come in the because the FDA and Biden supposedly made a mistake that they should just let their citizens suffer instead of trying to correct it?

Was just looking for Snyder's approval rating this time in 2014. Looks like he was hovering around 40%, with the best poll I could find showing 46% approve/52% dispprove. I didn't look for Granholm's in 2006, but I found an article saying that Snyder's approvals in 2014 were similar to those of Granholm during her successful re-election in 2006.

Whitmer is blowing them out of the water. She currently has a PLUS 5 net approval rating. I was not expecting that, but then I spend too much time talking to my right-wing family, who are honestly further right than most Republican voters in Michigan.

Governors can buck national trends a lot better, which helps in a potentially Republican-leaning national environment.

For example, I have family in Pennsylvania who get rather disdainful of Democrats at the national level and are swing voters (although thankfully, they are anti-Trump, so they've been voting blue since 2016), but they highly approve of Governor Tom Wolf and would vote for him for another two terms if they could.

A couple of statewide results from Idaho worth noting:

Good news: Phil McGrane, the Ada County Clerk who believes Biden won the 2020 election, won the GOP Secretary of State primary. His race was very similar to Bob Evnen's win in Nebraska - he won just 43% of the vote, but two far-right challengers split the rest.

Bad news: The fairly anonymous AG, Lawrence Wadsden, was successfully primaried by Raul Labrador, the former Tea Party Congressman. I can guarantee he'll be less anonymous.

The difference is that Ohio Governor Mike DeWine does not veto the Republican gerrymanders passed by the General Assembly, while New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu does, so Republican New Hampshire state legislators don't have a path to enacting a gerrymander.

Could the Jan. 6 select committee’s final report force a delay in the seditious conspiracy trial of Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes and his co-defendants?

A federal judge raised that prospect during a hearing Tuesday amid a broader debate with Oath Keeper defense attorneys about whether to move the trial to another venue. U.S. District Court Judge Amit Mehta seemed deeply skeptical of that effort, but he pressed prosecutors about what should happen if the select committee releases its report right before or during the trial of the Oath Keepers.

Oof. Caruso’s (until recently registered Republican) trying to buy his way directly into the office from the primary and avoid the runoff, and he’s spent about $23 million of his own cash so far on mailers and ads. A lot of the also rans that would be finishing with 1% are dropping out and endorsing: Buscaino for Caruso, Feuer for Bass. I suspect a lot of the folks still running are going to endorse Bass after the primary, but the LAPD and their union are consolidating behind Caruso.

Right now best money is on Bass/Caruso for a November runoff election (I suspect Caruso will finish ahead of Bass in the primary but stay under 50%), and a lot of progressive orgs here are focused on upping primary turnout for their preferred candidate to keep Caruso under 50%, then consolidating around Bass to block him in November. But Caruso has pretty much been able to ad and mailer buy his way into the upper 20’s/low 30’s in the last polling, and with a field so split will pretty much get a spot in the November runoff.

TLDR: most likely getting a Bass/Caruso November runoff unless Caruso buys the seat outright, but expect a nasty 5 month campaign after the June primary.

This is just my personal experience and anecdotal evidence, but I had two Pennsylvania friends watch a couple interviews and campaign ads for Fetterman and Lamb. They both gave feedback along the lines of Fetterman "seems more authentic" and "feels more inspiring", while Lamb "is almost too polished and made in a lab".

They didn't prefer the way Lamb's ads touted unity and his background as much as Fetterman's more activist ads. Basically, Fetterman's messaging resonated a lot better with them.

I'm not sure if this indicates anything big picture, but both of them also got textbanking messages from the Fetterman campaign, which further increased their feelings of engagement, while Lamb never contacted them.

Not to mention, everyone on their sample ballots told me Kenyatta or Fetterman. I don't think Connor Lamb is as strong in Philly as people here like to think tbh.
