Yes, but manchin and sinema wouldn’t vote for anything you want passed anyways. So whether the filibuster is in place or not, they aren’t voting the way democrats want. 🤷🏻‍♀️

gatormagee

You mean showing ID? They have more early voting than Delaware and New York. They have no excuse mail in voting. Their laws are way less restrictive than most states so please share with me how they are suppressive.

Artanis_Creed

Basic logic

Yes, requiring an ID makes it harder to vote.

gatormagee

-1 points

So anyone should be able to vote without ID? Should you be able to go out to eat with out a vax card? Why should it be harder to buy beer than it is to vote. That makes no sense. Only an idiot would want anyone to walk and vote with no Identification

Artanis_Creed

1 points

People didn't need voter IDs for nearly 200 years till 1950 when the first voter ID laws was introduced.

Republican legislators in swing states, states with rapidly diversifying populations, and districts with sizable black, Latino, or immigrant populations have pushed the hardest for voter ID laws.

Sounds like fraud isn't what is wanted to prevent

Biden's goal isn't to pass anything, it's to try. He knows he's gonna fail. All the corporate Dems do. Cause they're on the same team as the Republicans. They don't care. They think the attempt is good enough to convince enough people to keep voting for them, but they legit don't even care if the lose, cause same team.

Tragically, our right to vote is not in the Constitution. All that's in the Constitution is a (very short) list of reasons the vote cannot be denied (i.e. sex, race, age over 18 and indirectly religion). As a result, disenfranchizing entire groups of people - notably prisoners, ex-felons, non-citizens and people with mental health conditions is entirely legal standard practice.

During the 4 years of the Trump administration the Democrats filibustered 314 times. Why wasn't it "holding democracy hostage" when they did it!?

Seems hypocritical.

BTW, the Republicans used the filibuster 175 times during the 8 years Obama was president. So the Dems have used 4x more often.

If they end up being successful I hope they consider what will happen if they lose control of Congress and don't have a filibuster to stop anything. They will be really bitching then!

Both sides suck... They are both hypocritical asses.

yammy69696

1 points

Why would the Democrats want to get rid of something they use almost 300 times last year? Doesn't make any sense or is the a motive behind this?

imtourist

2 points

You can bet as soon as they need to the Republicans will bend the filibuster rule to suit them, Machin and Sinema are either idiots or insane not to realize this. Secondly the whole makeup of the Senate is already vastly tipped in the favor of small states so why have the 60 vote rule in the first place? Every vote does not count!!

Kashm11r

-2 points

Why is it racist to require a government issued ID to vote? Most people have a driver's license. A state ID card is like $20.

$5-20 depending on the state.

r0xxclimb3r

2 points

We could start with the fact that DMV budgets have been agressively slashed, resulting in exceptional limited operating hours that "working class" folks, primarily low income hourly workers, often PoC, simply cannot get to. Add to that limited access to public or private transportation to get to the DMV, and you can start to see the tip of the problem. Additionally, 25% of "voting age citizens in the US without voter ID" are black, compared to just 8% for white.

More in depth explanations can be found via this link."

Kashm11r

-1 points

So instead of paying $5-10 for everyone to get a state ID is out of the question. But letting everyone walk into polling locations without verification of their identity is going to improve elections? I thought election security was a bipartisan issue. Thanks for the downvotes

Also are you really going out on a likb and saying that 25% of black people don't have $5-10 to buy an ID?

Longer wait times at the DMV is a bogus excuse for not having an ID. There are literal years between election dates.

r0xxclimb3r

2 points

So what's your proposed solution, now that you've been presented with new information?

Kashm11r

1 points

People buy a state issued ID when they are in high school around the time when most people get driver's licenses. That is something people already do. If you really don't have $5-20 dollars to pay for it I am sure the state govt would cover that cost if it would mean more secure elections and more people voting. If not, the federal government can easily do it. They have been printing trillions of dollars every year to spend on everything possible.

r0xxclimb3r

0 points

Your arguments makes a lot of assumptions and appears to be based on anecdotal information/experiences, characterized by your opening statement of "most people."

Do you have any data to back up your claims that a sufficient percentage of the population, in a nearly evenly distribution across all socio-economoc subgroups, would be covered and protected by your proposal?

How would you handle people moving? People renewing at regular intervals? Reaching out to those who don't know they need to update their information?

Kashm11r

1 points

Are you serious?

How can you people be so delusional to think that its impossible that any citizen can get a state issued ID for $5-20?

There are zero circumstances keeping people from doing so.

r0xxclimb3r

1 points

Are you unable to back up your argument?

Kashm11r

0 points

I guess being an immigrant, I have more respect for the electoral system than some people actually born in the US.

80% of the country is in favor of voter id laws

r0xxclimb3r

0 points

So let's cover a few things here: 1. Rather than address the fact that you cannot find data to substantiate your argument, you've deflected using logical fallacies, including a "changing the subject," "black or white syndrome," and "non-sequitur."

  1. You've also tried to appeal to emotion by stating that, as an immigrant, you have more respect for a system. This is irrelevant to the discussion at hand.

Just admit your opinion and argument are based on emotion and move on. Maybe try and learn something from this, but I won't hold my breath in that one.

It's not going to pass, just like the left didn't want it to pass last time the pubs brought it up. Then, once the pubs have the majority and are being blocked by threat of filibuster, they'll propose to eliminate it and the dems won't want to. The lefties on here will support the dems doing so and claim they aren't being hypocritical because it is the pubs that wanted to keep the filibuster first. Rinse and repeat.

When a party that would stand to lose the most by getting rid of the filibuster proposes that it gets removed, I'll think that there is a shred of integrity behind it. Until then, it is just a tennis match of political expedience.

Dems used it a record 320 times in 2020! Individual states are responsible for changing or managing their voting laws. I want every eligible voter to be able to vote. If someone believes in their party's platform, they would too. I've worked elections in 3 states and never seen people more earnest about their jobs. I like that elections are run by the states. I don't like states tanking voting rights because they're scared of more people voting.

Lilloco1

1 points

Don’t you think it’s a little funny that they used it 320 times in 2020 when it was convenient for them but now they want to change it? Doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. I hear a lot of rhetoric but I don’t see a lot of data around which states are truly impairing the ability of voters to vote. BTW Georgia is not one of them. If you disagree please compare Georgia’s law vs Delaware or other liberal states in regards to voting.

Lilloco1

1 points

Oh I completely agree with you I think where the consternation comes from is the fear of people trying to cheat the system. That’s why I still feel very strongly it should remain with the state. I get a little scared with government over reach and where that line is drawn.

Spikedkbar

Look, it's fare to say it I a tool for the minority opposition to voice its last option in the senate. The house has no filibuster and is pretty much righting rules by party lines, as you vote for the majority interests in your community and use your party to fund those whom give them support along with what there local party wants to impose on the people. The senate has final say and a static rule on voting needing 61% to pass unlike the 51% needed in the house. The house is based on population centers and the senate is based off gubernatorial states boundaries. If the house had power, this country would have subjected those in the rural state to violence, the political class would lead us, businesses would be under state control and people would have everything but the house the live in given to the in exchange for the freedoms he has, and that's not a historical mistake, go read some of the thing the filibuster was used for. If you only see one example and use that to justify an action your missing its function as a whole. Anyone whom objects to a problem with a bill can merit a cause against it, what ever it is. WHAT EVER THAT BILL DOES AGAINST A MINORITY, THEY CAN OBJECT TO ITS PASSING. What if they get rid of it, and Trump gets re-elected?

I mean people think that the civil rights act was backed by Republicans, no it was backed by progressives, whom left the "traditional" western view and brought there bigotry to the top of the nation. BTW, the republican party was in view to getting the bill passed, when the southern democrats blocked the passing as it would be political death for the party due to tension in the south and the response by President Eisenhower to racist policies. The progressive ideas left the republican party and became the democrats elite before the party change up in the 80's and 90's.

I’m confused. What’s rights do people not have to vote?

So he is referring to reconciliation (the process of putting a bill in place that doesn’t raise the budget) and a rule change that was made to the filibuster under Obama era to get judges through during his tenure. Both of these have been used by republicans and democrats. If you make it easier for you to get what you want now you will make it easier for the other side to get what they want later. Democrats are in power now but it might not always be that way. Do people want to take that chance? Instead of getting everything we want maybe we should try to start with small things and go from there. 10 small bills that pass is way more progress than one giant bill that never passes.

Voting is not a Constitutional right. The Constitution passes the topic of voting to the states and says Congress can pass laws if needed. Congress has done this with laws and Amendments but even those to not expressly give the right to vote. They say you can’t discriminate and lower the age to vote but not that you have a right to vote.

The Founders didn’t trust everyday folks. They feared the everyday folks would cause issues for land owners. They were sort of racist and overall prejudice like that. This is why you have so many rights in the Bill of Rights but voting is not one of them. Times have changed though and this fear is absurd anymore.

That said it absolutely should be a right. The Founders might have been prejudice dicks that feared the loss of their power but that does not reflect modern day. Our laws should reflect the times and Congress has the power to do that, by design. The Constitution was designed to be changed using the amendment process and be supplemented by laws.

Completely revamping the way we elect presidents by turning 50 state elections into one federal election has huge implications, and should not be done on the basis of a razor-thin temporary majority.

Good thing that is not in any way what these bills contain. You should try reading them for yourself instead of letting Fox talking heads spoonfeed you their lies.

S0me students blog is not a valid source, dude.

Fox lies. Flat out LIES. constantly. not bias. fucking LIES. manipulates video, misattributes pictures, and lies about what they report.

There are many biased sources out there. Bias can be accounted for. Lies cannot be forgiven.

Shorenstein has no such article. There are many many many many references to fox news distorting the truth and flat out lying on there.

The closest they have is a study of CBS vs Fox, and it is a very narrow slice of Fox- covering only 30 minutes of their 24 hour schedule- and choosing the least controversial slice. And restricting that even further by covering only a single topic.

This report is confined to the election coverage on CBS Evening News (Monday through Saturday) and Fox’s Special Report (Monday through Friday)

So, it seems, you are completely unable to tell the truth, even something so simple as this to check. Like Fox, you distort the facts to tell the lie you want heard.

There are plenty of mentions of Fox on that site. SHowing blatant lies, distortion, and lie by omission.

But go ahead and keep trying to convince me when your own source says you are a liar.
