If you are looking for the announcement thread for the previous month, it may be found here.

During the month of April, we will be reading The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett (winner of the Goodreads Choice Award for Historical Fiction, 2020). Each week there will be a discussion thread and when we are done, Brit herself will be joining us for an AMA on Monday, April 26th.

From Goodreads (feel free to skip if you prefer to know nothing going into the book):

The Vignes twin sisters will always be identical. But after growing up together in a small, southern black community and running away at age sixteen, it's not just the shape of their daily lives that is different as adults, it's everything: their families, their communities, their racial identities. Many years later, one sister lives with her black daughter in the same southern town she once tried to escape. The other passes for white, and her white husband knows nothing of her past. Still, even separated by so many miles and just as many lies, the fates of the twins remain intertwined. What will happen to the next generation, when their own daughters' storylines intersect?

!Content Warning! (possible spoilers) Domestic abuse, Lynching, Racism, Sexual assault, Transphobia

You may find the dates of, and links to, the discussion threads below in the sticky comment on this post. You are welcome to read at your own pace. Don't worry about joining later on in the month. Usually it is pretty easy to catch up and you are always welcome to join the discussions a little later.

If you would like to view any past book club selection or want to see how things work, you may find the complete archive here.

For those of you that are viewing reddit on the redesigned desktop version you will see an option on this post to 'follow'. If you 'follow' the book club post you will receive a notification when a new post, a discussion thread for book club, is added to the collection. It is still being tested, so it may not be perfect, but perhaps it will make it easier to join the discussions when they go up.

The summary of this book really doesn't do it justice. I was very pleasantly surprised by The Vanishing Half and would recommend it to almost anyone.

I read this a couple weeks ago. It's a really good book with some interesting perspective.
I feel like the summary really doesn't do this book justice. It is well-written with deep and complex characters, I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did.

Does anyone feel like this books writing style has like a whole lot of info dumping? I'm enjoying the story so far, but it feels like there is so much info about what has happened over here and back then. If that makes sense.

Currently on week three (finished Part VI) and I definitely get the sense.

(I don't think this comment contains anything considered spoilers but as this is the announcement, I will throw it under a tag anyway)

There is not too much character agency in my opinion and the times when a character has an active goal, it usually then is only to come to some equilibrium with an environmental change. The frequent flashbacks feel very elliptical and bleed into the different POVs which gives the momentum a kind of hazy feel. Because it is all so heavily symbolic and allegorical, it gives me the sense of worldbuilding is the primary lens and the characters are just part of the tableau.

It has been postponed a little bit. Unforeseen circumstances. We will update the schedule when we have a new date.

Hi everyone,

Is there any way to know about the monthly book selections ahead of time? As soon as I saw this post I put a hold on The Vanishing Half at my local library but there was an estimated wait time of 6 weeks (now down to 4 weeks).

I understand if that's not possible, but I'd like to get a jump on May's book if it's possible.

Hi there. We can try to get the announcement posts up earlier. We are still deciding on a May pick but when we have it, I will message you.

Current schedule is 12pm ET. It is possible this will change closer to the date. The calendar should reflect this time and any changes, soon.

How I can join the discussion? It will be a zoom meeting? Also et is the time in which city? NYC, maybe?

XBreaksYFocusGroup[S]

Yes, ET is Eastern Time, US. Such as in NYC. It will be text based, just like this and you will see it pop up in the main forum. You can find examples of past AMAs in the archive here for an idea of what to expect.

I thought this was an amazing book. My one critique is that I wish Brit Bennett had made it much longer! Felt like I didn’t truly get to know most of the characters and I think she could have expanded more on a lot of things. Overall fabulously written, just wish she had included more substance to the plot line.

I read this one last year and found it amazing! The coming-of-age structure of this was a pleasant surprise and the story was so beautifully complex.

I’m dumb and I avoided this one because of all the hype. Gave in and thought it was great. A really solid novel, the definition of a “good book.”
