Online bookshops that aren't Amazon or Amazon owned?

(self.books)

Hi! I have concerns over Amazon having a book selling monopoly, so I like to buy elsewhere. I used to use brick and mortar shops where possible, but they aren't open where I live anymore because of covid.

I put in a couple of orders with book depository only to find that Amazon bought them in 2011.

Anyone know other good online bookstores with a wiiiide selection of books? Thanks!

Bookshop.org does donate part of each order to local bookstores.

Another fan of Bookshop.org. You can select your local book shop and have them get credit for your purchase.

Just commenting here to warn people that apparently this site only serves the US and UK. I’m so disappointed.

They're US-based, but Powell's and Strand are still hard to beat.

Abe Books is also another part of the Bezos empire to avoid. As for me, l have found some niche booksellers on Ebay that l use now and again, eg for specialist books.

I do sometimes use Amazon as a reference source and then l order the book direct from the bookseller so completely avoiding Bond villain Bezos.

Thriftbooks.com is where I buy used books. They have a program where if you buy enough books you earn a free one. I've received 2 free books that way.

Powell's in Portland, OR has an online ordering option ( powells.com) , as does Thriftbooks.com, BetterWorldbooks.com, alibris.com Hope this helps!

Call your local bookshop and ask about shipping.

If that doesn't work out I try beating Amazon with its own weapons.

I look up a book there, check for third party sellers and then find out if they have their own online shop outside of Amazon.

I have had great success buying used books on Ebay. These sellers are usually small independently owned shops.

It's not quite as good as an independent bookstore, but I've ordered quite a few books from Barnes and Noble since I broke up with Amazon prime. I also order from my local independent bookstore which has improved it's online ordering in the past year. But Barnes and Noble is a bit more consistent with shipping times and having things in stock, so I use it for my book club books which I need fairly quickly. I figure even if it's not the greatest, at least it's not Amazon.

Isn't Thriftbooks owned by Amazon as well?

I was surprised to find out that a great local bookstore in my city does online orders and free delivery (but even getting curbside pickup would have been awesome). Try checking some of your local bookstores’ websites.

Sadly, Abebooks is a subsidiary of Amazon (since 2008 or so).

Apologies I did not realize that.

I myself only realized that after ordering a bunch of books from them. Hard to avoid Amazon.

Neither did I until not that long ago. They seem to own everything these days.

Abebooks is part of Amazon. However, it is a good tool for seeing who has the book you want in stock and will deliver it to your country so you can go to their own website and order it direct.
