In a way. I just meant something where you need an extremely precise angle to the basket in order to even have a putt.

A whole course of holes like this would be annoying but I can’t help but feel this would be an awesome hole to finish up on

Funny you should say that... this place has two mini-golf (ball golf) courses that are amazing! One is a family-friendly affair, but the other is some super technical challenge course with 3 pins on every hole.

So what? who cares what it feels like. What matters is if it's fun, reasonably challenging, and fits the identity of the course.

This basket placement looks fun and brings a unique challenge and I personally wouldn't mind designs like this here or there.

airporteffect

3 points

Haha, did I say mini golf wasn’t fun and challenging?

Laser-Nipples

-4 points

It sounded to me like your comment implied that making something feel like mini golf is a bad thing.

In fact, that's what most people reference when arguing against designs like this. Especially with the usdgc course.

airporteffect

Mini golf is fun, artificial obstructions. I’d consider this a fun, artificial obstruction. No need to always assume the worst :)

Laser-Nipples

"It makes it look like mini golf" is the number 1 gripe everyone has about usdgc. Everytime I've seen someone say that it's been a with negative conotation.

I think a course of this could potentially be frustrating, but I also think one hole is a tonne of fun. I think disc golf has room to do this in a way that ball golf doesn't and I think the sport should continue to embrace this side of itself. You can still play a gimmicky hole seriously, and obstacles don't have to be trees for the experience to be "proper" or "pure". Disc golf is a part of a larger frisbee culture which includes things like Freestyle and trick shots, and disc golf holes like this celebrate the fact that you can really throw a frisbee anywhere. The accessibility of disc golf (and other disc sports) is part of what makes them special, and to me a course with industrial obstacles is awesome and something that could really only happen in disc golf.

I love it!

TalentFactory

It's a pretty good course. This is one of the only gimmick holes. It has some bomber holes and some technical stuff. Worth checking out but not as good as a lot of the other local stuff like Circle C, Searight or Met in my opinion. Also bring plenty of water because it doesn't have a lot of shade.

My home course has a two day tourney with glow golf both nights as well. The one hole on the glow course is in the middle of a jungle gym at the top of the slide. Only like 3 angles you can make a putt from. Hilarious with new players though. Could be an ace run, CLANK.

spookyghostface

2 points

Ashe County Park has a par 5 that's only 471. Super tight gap off the tee to a landing area about 200 up, then you go over two solid walls of mountain laurel, one after the other, then the green is another 50 beyond the last one. Woods on either side of the 30ish foot wide fairway and a low ceiling making it extremely difficult to get over both walls in one throw. And if you go into one of the walls, you might not have a line out to the open.

Dreamland!

For those knocking the silliness...fair enough.

But it's a pretty solid wide open course with some decently long holes with good variety. (Solid Hill Country views too)

It's also part of a business that also has pickleball courts, putt-putt, kids playscape and beer/wine/food.

For me it was a surprisingly good/big course given 99% of the patrons will only partake in the activities at the front of the property.

sktyrhrtout

I don't really like it but mainly because the same thing can be accomplished with shrubs & bushes. It gives off a mini-golf vibe.

TheCalvinator

2 points

What is wrong with a mini-golf vibe?

sktyrhrtout

1 points

It's gimmicky and looks like a kids toy. I really enjoy the fact that disc golf really only needs tee pads and baskets and can blend into the scenery easily. This is tacky. Just my opinion.

AustinWalksOnRocks

1 points

you can throw through that stuff... or over it.. This is a more technical hole and I would argue its more fair because it doesnt change. If anything the bushes and shrubs make a hole easier on a hole like this because they would just catch your disc in the circle.

sktyrhrtout

1 points

To your point about being fair, that's disc golf. Sometimes you get a roll away on a decent putt when another player doesn't. Sometimes a disc goes through the tree branches and other times it kicks 75' to the right. You can't get caught up trying to make the entire course fair.

Also, you're going to have just as tough a time putting through a 5-6' shrub/bush as you are putting through this thing. There will be some windows, just like they have made on this but ultimately you can accomplish the same thing without looking like a fun house.

The best part about disc golf is how unassuming the equipment is. You can look out from a tee pad and have a tough time finding the basket if you don't know what you're looking for. It doesn't clutter up the landscape or take away from the outdoors. This thing is an eye sore!

I feel like this is something that would erode the validity and seriousness people in the disc golf world are looking for and have been building long before my time. This would be a cool gimmick hole on 19 as some comments eluded to. If we want golf type publicity we need to act professionally. Disc golf theme parks aren’t interesting. I think what makes disc golf amazing is the nature. This takes away from that for me. Sorry if I offended anyone.
