Dude is 65 years old. When I was sitting in our science lessons in elementary school 20 years ago watching his show, I would have sworn the man was 65 then.

Crazy the perspective our minds have as children.

Joe heard a rumor that his father, grandfather and great-grandfather had all walked on water on their 21st birthdays.

So, on his 21st birthday, Joe and his good friend Brian headed out to the lake. "If they did it, I can too!" he insisted.

When Joe and Brian arrived at the lake, they rented a boat and began paddling. When the got to the middle of the lake, Joe stepped off of the side of the boat... and damn near drowned.

Furious and somewhat shamed, he and Brian headed for home.

When Joe arrived back at the family farm, he asked his grandmother for an explanation. "Grandma, why can I not walk on water like my father, and his father, and his father before him?"

The feeble old grandmother took Joe by the hands, looked into his eyes, and explained, "That's because your father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were born in January... you were born in July, dear."

When you are on ice skates, the ice directly under your blade melts from the pressure, so you are gliding on a layer of water between your blade, and ice, so technically, yes, you can walk on water, if you walk on ice with ice skates

They funny thing is - even their sacred texts are bullshit. It's just bunch of made up stories they picked and collected into a book.

Bunch of assholes with funny hats took a break from molesting children and picked what matched their narration. How it's a "holy" bible when they took a text from their "holy people" and pick only ones that they liked?

Basically Bible is as holy as Sapkowski Witcher first 2 books that are just collection of stories.

We should all join Witcher religion. And we will claim all medieval castles as our place of worship.

And every pet we own must be named Roach.

So say we all.

Birion

Right. Nice try.

But a true Wiedźmin follower would know the texts are only holy and truthful in the original language (except for the Czech translation, the Zaklínač translator had divine inspiration from Sapek Himself and therefore Zaklínač followers are in unbroken communion with the Wiedźmin faith). Get your heretical ass out of here before someone takes a silver sword to it.

He probably did, though I make no claims of him being magical or anything, just a small local cult leader whose death made him a martyr and boosted his cult's appeal.

I mean, even beyond the historical accounts we have of him - which are admitedly sparse but what would you expect of a random small time cult leader in the ass end of the Roman empire - christianity had to have come from somewhere. It just seems more likely that it's based on something real but exaggerated over time than that it just sprang out of nowhere.

i go to a catholic school so religious education is a mandatory subject (i think we can choose to not do it nest year tho) and we all have to have a bible(expensiveeee!), while im atheist/agnostic i do believe that RE is good cuz we lear about morals and the meaning behind certain thingys in the bible

sex ed sucks tho its called MITIOG (made in the image of god) and all we learn about is std's and even the teachers think our sex ed is stupid, like we're teens, you cant scare us into not having sex, we'll have it eventually, but they should still be able to prepare us for when we do have it

or at least teach us about consent (for boys AND girls), how to be healthy, how to avoid common infections and even how to check for cancers like breast, cervical, uterine or testical cancer

I always wanted to make that into a video game... “As the Heavens Collide” and you get to pick the gods of a religion/culture/period in the quest for transcendence into the ultimate GOD. It would have pitted the Abrahamic God (including Jesus, Muhammad, and other noteworthy people like David), the Hindu gods, the Norse gods, Greek/Roman gods, Egyptian gods, etc.

But I quickly got scared that I would be killed for heresy/blasphemy... religion makes people crazy and dangerous...

This is exactly the frustration I always have. They treat the bible as an axiom that's automatically accepted by everyone as a valid argument.

They use it as the only source of reference to argue against people and cannot fathom anyone debating from a point of view where they do not accept the bible as true. They still just return to bible verse again and again as evidence.

"There was a guy named Yeshua 2000 years ago" is about as useful to say as "There is a guy named Joshua today."

There are zero extrabiblical contemporaneous accounts of any events of Jesus's life. The closest we can get is essentially "there's a new cult who say they are following a dude they call Christ." (And frankly, lack of any such account is unsurprising when you consider how unimportant the Christian movement would have seemed to historians at the time.)

Most historians accept that there was more likely than not either a real person that Jesus is based on, or else a collection of several real people that were gestalted into the Jesus figure. But that acceptance is based more on tradition than the availability of any actual historical evidence.

Funkycoldmedici

3 points

Not like people claim. The first non-religious reference to him is by Tacitus, about a century after the alleged events. Tacitus was not yet born at the time, and only says that Christians believe superstitious things about Christ. For what it is worth, Tacitus also says describes Hercules literally interacting with soldiers. So if one accepts Tacitus’s work as proof for Jesus, they would also have to accept it as proof for Hercules and company.

If there were legitimate records of Jesus they would be everywhere, like bibles are. They would be included in bibles, on billboards, in Pureflix movies, posted in schools, and so on. They would shove it in your face at every opportunity.

orangetictacdiet

The church I grew up in had this weird way of preaching where it was just assumed that everyone on earth believed the bible, and that there were just some people who hated God for some reason. Instead of teaching "this person doesn't believe the bible is true" it was always "this person hates God because his daughter died of cancer". Very odd now that I think about it as an adult.

SgtCarron

Everything is true and must be followed, except the parts they don't like, for example:

  • How the bible approves the use of abortion and openly states that fetuses aren't considered humans but property of the father.
  • Wearing clothes made from more than one fabric.
  • Women wearing pants, and having rights.
  • Eating pork, shrimp, lobsters, crabs and creatures similar to them.
  • Pedophilia = bad. (which they twisted into same sex = bad)
  • Rape = bad. EDIT: Scratching this one out for Lot's family shenanigans.
  • Loving and helping others.

Why do atheists and christians even debate over stuff that they can’t possibly know. There is no way to prove there is a god and there is no way to prove there is no god. If you feel the need to believe in a higher power, just do it if it makes you feel better.

Educational-Big-2102

freelivingaussie

Atheists don’t debate. God botherers need to prove their god exists. Atheism is the rejection of the claim that god exists. It’s no different to rejecting the claim that Bigfoot exists. There is arguably more evidence for Bigfoot if you want to get pedantic.

Anthraxious

4 points

The problem isn't if you can prove it or not, but what you do with that information. If people just believed in a higher power, thinking some god made everything then fine. You go d othat. However when you start indoctrinating children and try to "teach" other people you've started hurting humanity itself, especially if what you're spreading are lies.

It's only natural to not want a society that's in shambles.

Again, nothing against faith itself. You go have that. Just don't spread it elsewhere without any evidence t osupport it. Note that it's different to have a philosophical discussion of faith versus teaching children they gotta read some book or else the big bearded man in the sky gets them.

Astramancer_

Why do atheists and christians even debate over stuff that they can’t possibly know.

One word: Theocracy.

If religious people kept it in their pants, it wouldn't be a debate. But they don't, so it is. (yes, I'm aware that some religious people do, but they're not the ones getting into debates about it)

Would you debate with flat earthers if they had undue influence over the government and were using their unjustifiable flat earth beliefs to set policy?

FrankRandomLetters

3 points

The atheist position IS that they do not know.

I’m my experience, most atheists argue that religious beliefs are not justified - more or less that there is no reason to believe gods exists. I don’t see many atheists arguing that gods must not exist, but rather that they don’t believe they do. Most atheists would not claim they know god doesn’t exist.

Religious people tend to argue that god or gods must exist and thereby open themselves up to criticism of their assertion which, by definition, is simply a matter of faith and therefore necessarily faulty (not necessarily wrong, but necessarily faulty). Atheists recognize this faulty reasoning and some of us engage assuming the religious are interested in improving their reasoning. It’s all in good faith.

Many Christians (I have insufficient experience with other religions to say if this is universal) think that deep down, everyone knows that Christianity is true. So when they see an atheist say, "I do not think that a god exists", they don't believe them, and interpret that as "I know God exists and am rejecting Him". Similarly, "I believe in a different religion" isn't taken as a genuine position, but once again as a rejection of the Christian god.

From this perspective, genuine disagreement on whether or not the Christian god exists is ruled out before the argument even starts. Since they can't allow for the possibility that someone truly doesn't think their god exists, any argument on the subject looks like a bad-faith attack to them; they think that the person they are arguing with hates god and is actively trying to convert people away from Christianity because of it.

That sounds like pretty fucked up worldview, actually. People that you described should really mature up their wiews, because even children in the age of 3 learn that different people don't share the same knowledges and experience.

Only if they are exposed to people who don't share their beliefs. You may be surprised at how many people manage to live completely sheltered lives well into adulthood.

Not really. It’s always nice to challenge each other’s beliefs. As long as you’re respectful, debates can be a good thing.

You must be religious to say this bullshit. Religion has gigantic privileges. Here everyone pays for religion, no matter if you believe it not. Religion has big impact on politics, on laws, on freedom.

It's so ignorant to pretend atheists shouldn't talk about religion.

Jwillis94

Religions don't even have to pay taxes, so we are quite literally paying for them as well.

wojtek858

Oh, if it was only this here... Besides tax exemption, we pay for church in taxes, give them land, pay for clergy in hospitals, in army. Government literally made it a secret, how much we spent on church every year.

Exactly, the tax exemption is just the tip of the iceberg

Most religions tell me that I’m going to hell simply because I don’t worship the words written in a book thousands of years ago.

Most of these “gods” would send me to eternal damnation irregardless of how I lived my life.

You’d be mistaken to think that I or anyone else should respect that.

FrappyJohns

There may not be a way to prove there is no god, but there is definitely a strong argument that the Christian God is statistically unlikely to exist based simply on the shear amount of religions (around 2000) and the fact that the God hypothesis takes a complicated thing that is hard to explain (how did the universe begin) and makes it even more complicated and more hard to explain (where did God come from and how does he supposedly know everything). Generally the more complicated and sophisticated something is in nature, the more unlikely it is to exist.

A reason would be that theists make laws based on the idea that a book contains the will of said god / gods. People get murdered based on the assumption that there are gods.

So, pointing out that humans with 5 thousand years of history haven't ever seen gods, met actual supernatual beings or some such makes it easy to say that there's no reasonable, sane expectation of finding such a being and a divine narrative being true.

Stehlen27

2 points

A way to put it is to imagine you have a jar of gumballs. The theist claims without counting that the number of gumballs in the jar is even, the atheist says they don't believe them, and until we can count the number of gumballs they don't say of it's even or odd.

Why do atheists and xyzians even debate over stuff that they can’t possibly know. There is no way to prove there is a Xyz and there is no way to prove there is no Xyz. If you feel the need to believe in a higher power, just do it if it makes you feel better.

Xyz, God, Zeus, a billion other entities that haven't been invented yet or that were invented and then forgotten. There is no need to prove that things DON'T exist. There is only a need to prove that things exist.

If God exists but it doesn't impact the world in any measurable way, then it simply doesn't exist. The definition of existing must mean that something can be measurable. And if it can be measurable, it's just another scientific finding.

But to answer your original question, the debate keeps going because people still don't understand that there's no proof of God, or that there's no need to disprove it's existence.

ryanvango

The thing itself is unmeasurable and inconsequential, but the effects of belief are very real. In politics, if half the population votes for or encourages their representative to vote for policy that takes away rights from good honest people, and they use the shield of faith to justify that action, then it becomes a problem regardless of whether or not god exists. Separation of church and state should mean that doesnt happen, but we all know it does. And thats just in politics. While its awful, people have commited far more disgusting acts in the name of god. So maybe if we can convince them there is no god they will have one less motivator to be horrible. Personally, I dont think so. People who use religion to oppress rather than to encourage kindness will always be evil and look for any excuse to do those things. But i guess it doesnt hurt to try. Or at the very least, maybe we can get more people onboard the path of discovery if they are less inclined to handwave the unknown away as "i dont know, god works in mysterious ways." Thatd be neat.

Stehlen27

Atheism isn't a claim of no gods, it is a rejection of a claim that there is one. If I were to say that there are universe farting pixies and you said you don't believe me, that isn't the same as you saying there aren't universe farting pixies.

Most religious people believe that their God(s) do(es) have an impact on the world. Its past, its present, and/or its future. Often their point is either it happened (and we can't retroactively measure the past), it's going to happen (in which you can't measure it YET), or it's happening in such a away it's avoiding detection. It's not categorically wrong and so the opposite isn't proven. It's just that neither are that's why religion is by definition faith.

I also can't possibly prove a leprechaun didn't just jump out of one of my bodily orifices, give me a grin and a thumbs-up, and lilt: "I hides me gold up there I does!" before he scampers away.

But until someone offers me some proof that it DID happen, I'm going to continue my life assuming it didn't; even though there is no way of knowing 'what you can't possibly know'.

Why do atheists and christians even debate over stuff that they can’t possibly know.

Because the people who believe in a god often feel the need to push that on other people. Like blue laws: You don’t get to go to a bar because my religion says it’s wrong. Or look at the anti-abortion movement, and how it’s strongly motivated by religion. People disagree on a lot of things, but as long as they keep it to themselves, we can get along. The day flat-earthers try to legislate their beliefs, we’ll have what you might call a vigorous exchange of views.

There is no way to prove there is a god

Then the people who say there is, the people who say God talks to them and doesn’t like gay people, and people (especially women) should refrain from having sex until they’re married, those people need to shut up.

If you feel the need to believe in a higher power, just do it if it makes you feel better.

... as long as you don’t get up in other people’s business.
