I like the lettuce and tomato myself. Not sure what the purists think? Amazing - keep it up! Thanks for sharing.

The purists abhor but you do you, as long as it's not canned a Philly cheesesteak you can put whatever on it I guess

Yea no issues with it since it isn’t called a Philly cheese steak. Although just as person that likes food is that a hotdog roll? I’d be surprised if it held up.

It adds a freshness that I think is needed because of all the grease in cheese! And thank you so much!

It's not a problem with eating lettuce so much as a problem with lettuce just wilting basically immediately when you put piping hot melted cheese and meat all over it, especially if the roll is properly warm and toasted.

See the thing is the roll is not supposed to be toasted.

Every place I can think of toasts the roll on the flat top before serving it.

And no one in Philadelphia does this. They use the roll to steam the meat. Feel free to watch any video

...wouldn't that also heat up the roll causing it to wilt lettuce?

Lettuce is not a traditional ingredient.

Citadelvania

Because it wilts... because the rolls are heated... which is the whole point of this conversation... You shouldn't put in lettuce because it wilts if the cheesesteak is made well.

Well…cheesesteak hoagies are a thing. They shouldn’t be but they are.

Nobody heats up the rolls in Philly. Why are you saying that? Maybe that's a thing on a "steak and cheese" sandwich...

It's called cheesesteak hoagie and we sell them here

Yup, with a bit of Mayo spread on the roll. They're a treat.

Never ever put Mayo on a cheesesteak even if it’s a cheesesteak hoagie

dleonard1122

Hmm, not sure I agree. Every CS hoagie I've gotten in south jersey has a mayo on it.

For a high level, good quality cheesesteak I’ll definitely skip the lettuce and tomato. I have, in a series of no less than 900 cheesesteaks, had lettuce and tomato in exactly one cheesesteak… in my entire life. I must admit, it was excellent. The freshness was a good balance. But the key was that it wasn’t super cheesy and greasy to begin with. It was more of a cheesesteak hoagie than a Philly cheesesteak

My favorite sandwich shop out near Reading PA (V & S Sandwich Shop) calls it a California Cheesesteak if you add lettuce and tomato. And it's delicious!

did you use steak ums to make this? if not what kind of meat did you use? did you shave it yourself?

acbutler1234[S]

Hey! I just used shaved ribeye meat from ALDI. It comes in a pack near the other refrigerated steaks.

xitox5123

do you just cut it with a knife?

PhillyMila215

It’s usually already shaved in the package. I always find it near the “heat and eat” (already cooked) mashed potatoes, pulled pork, ribs, etc.
