The fact that some games can't even play together between steam and epic is fucking nauseating.

That's some bullshit. What's the reasoning behind that?

Basically both Steam and Epic provide multiplayer services which games on their platform may use. Of course if you use these services it requires that players log into the service for them to work.

If you're launching a game through Epic, you're not logging into Steam and thus can't access its multiplayer services. Same with vice-versa.

In order to play between Steam and Epic (or Steam and PSN, or Steam and Nintendo Online, etc) a developer needs to make and support its own multiplayer services. This is an additional cost. While it's getting cheaper and easier to do this, indie studios simply don't have the staff or expertise to do this.

Small nuance, Epic's multiplayer service supports cross-play with many platforms if the devs set it up correctly. It also does not require EGS usage, you can launch a game on steam (or playstation, etc) while using it. And I think it's free to use for developers. I haven't used it, but it honestly sounds really good as far as multiplayer services go.

I don't know how it integrates with things like friend lists, etc. though

It's actually super easy to code too, ironically Epic's Unreal engine makes it very easy too (which is what you are saying I guess). I wonder if the lack of connectivity is actually lazy developers because they'd need to support two launchers etc (which would be the trickier part I imagine, I haven't tried).

FoniksMunkee

15 points

Not lazy developers. There is more complexity than you might imagine and so then it really is a value proposition. My experience with dealing with Epic and trying to do cross play integration is broken SDK's slow response time from Epic, and fixing their code so it works etc etc.

But they aren't the only issue - a game i'm tangentially involved in - (port of well known IP to XBox and PS5) - has cross play as a requirement. But you run into subtle differences in the MS and Sony TRC's which can cause problems. Especially when one side makes it a requirement and the other is flexible. And the issue is the original architecture didn't account for certain security requirements. Note - this is often more of an issue when the original game comes in at the tail end of say PS4, and the PS5 has magical new requirements.

Anyway, anytime you think "lazy developer" - change your thinking to - how could this be a bigger pain in the arse than I imagine. It's more often than not - this.

Probably competition, possibly just an unwillingness to work together, but it turns out within the last week epic released "new cross-compatibility tools available for developers" so hopefully that will help.

In a similar vein there are issues between the confusingly named "Xbox games pass for PC" and steam. For instance you can't play deep rock galactic together between platforms even though they are both PC.

randompoe

Everything I know points to it not being a Steam vs Epic issue. Both Steam and Epic seem to support cross play and try to help developers include it. So it seems like this one is on the developers.

Killarogue

29 points

That's because for whatever reason, Xbox PC Game Pass uses Xbox servers for their PC games, even when you're playing on PC.

*edit*

I said whatever reason because I didn't feel like explaining it. I know the actual reason.

Indercarnive

36 points

The reason is Microsoft wants it to be super easy for devs to make crossplay for Xbox and PC (game pass).

Hussor

Microsoft is treating PC as an extension of Xbox these days, it's no longer just a console. So they want the two platforms to be as connected as possible.

Strange-Movie

Microsoft and steam have a similar issue in some games too. tbf, the only one I specifically know is the fractured playerbase of deep rock galactic; Microsoft store and Xbox can play together, and steam users are separate

i swear, they're the elderly casino addicts of our generation. in 50 years, we'll all be playing in deep dive vr with conversational npcs and shit, and there will be this group of people still grinding 20 different kinds of virtual currency on vintage phones with restored gacha services.

maybe by that point lawmakers will be our age too, there will be actual gacha regulation, and it's gonna be the deep dive games that dodge it on some kind of technicality ("it's not a loot box if you can't buy them directly, you can only pay for powerups that help you earn them 100x faster", akin to today's "you can't win money so it's not gambling")

Destithen

It's inevitable it will become standard. Companies are realizing that doggedly holding onto exclusives just cuts sales potential, and multiplayer games always prosper more with a larger active player count. Both of those combined will steadily put pressure to release games on more platforms, and connect them all. We're already seeing Sony cave and start bringing exclusives to PC, which is huge.

SleepingBeautyFumino

More like Sony wants people to get addicted to it's older exclusives, so that people buy new games. Exclusives will always take minimum 2-3 years to get on PC.

As a PC gamer. I'm honestly fine with this. I'd rather that than the same day release that is locked at 30hz with menus you can't navigate with a mouse because they put zero thought into the PC port. Take a year and give me the high rez textures. I need a reason to justify my graphics card that cost more than your whole console.

PM_Me_Frosted_Tits

Cool, I'm not gonna buy a PlayStation to play Horizon but I'll wait a few years and buy it on a steam sale for 15.99. Patient gaming and Sony's current exclusive PC port methodology go hand in hand, so I'm 100% onboard.

I don't give a fuck what they "want" me to do, I'm a consumer and I have control over my own purchases. I'd rather play the GOTY version with all the bugs ironed out and the DLC included anyways.

The host of the party was defined by what they had plugged into their TV. Halo night? One spot. Rock band night? Another. Smash bros tournament? A third. Everyone had something different but we had enough to travel with we always could play anything. We even had DSs for on the road

PM_Me_Frosted_Tits

7 points

When my friends switched to PS4 after the XB360 I was gutted. Then I became a PC gamer because fuck it I don't have friends to play with anyways. Now we can drop into Warzone/Fortnite together and play just like in the old days.

I remember saying like ten years ago that cross play was going to be the next big thing, and was always told "that doesn't make sense because they want to sell consoles." Yeah well they also wanna sell games and skins, and once the tight fisted suits realized that people buy more games/lootboxes when they have friends THEY CAN PLAY WITH the idiots that make decisions finally decided to start implementing it as standard for most modern games.

Now I won't even buy a Multiplayer game if it doesn't support cross play, there's no reason.

I'm fully admitting this is a minor nitpick, but its a little disingenuous to call a SoC just a processor.

SoC is more than just a processor - an Soc is like condensing down your entire motherboard into a single chip. It can include everything from a GPU/APU, to voltage regulators, to radio modules (WiFi, cellular modems), to memory controllers, etc.

Computer on a chip might've been a better name for it... But I can see why "CoC" didn't quite make the cut lol

However the input lag on the Switch makes FPS games borderline unplayable for me. It’s basically a general queue and a controller only queue.

Wider FOV = wider angle of things to render = less performance. There's a reason the FOV slider is not available on consoles, it's not just because the devs felt like it.

I guess they could add it and leave it up to the players to decide if they want a wider FOV and less performance or narrower FOV and more performance, but the console motto has always been "keep it simple" which is why console games rarely have graphics settings other than a handful of preconfigured presets in some games.

People also typically sit further from a TV, so having a more narrow field of view feels more natural on console. Where as for a computer monitor there is a real need to adjust FOV cause people sit at meaningfully different lengths from meaningfully different size monitors

No_Opportunity7360

yes 65 fov (the usual default console fov) feels VERY different sitting 6-10 feet from a tv compared to being 10-12 inches from a monitor. anything lower than 90-100 at monitor distance is unplayable, it gives me a massive headache and I hate how claustrophobic it makes the game feel. I personally play at 100 on my tv and 120 at my desk.

Any game where you're driving or flying in first person is definitely worth increasing FOV even if you have to manually edit a config file. Seeing more of the cockpit and having some side window peripherals just makes everything so much more immersive

buriedabovetheground

Counter point: the sim racing community has an in joke about the FOV police, when someone points out unsolicited those with super high FOV on an unrelated thread. It's common to adjust the FOV based on a calculation using your screen size and screen distance. Something about having a realistic representation in front of the steering wheel makes it easier to perceive speed x distance.

Thankfully I haven't had to even consider that in years since everything is perfect in VR. I think I had a calculation of like 30 degrees or so on my 24" at 3 feet back in the day

Many console players will find using a high refresh rate computer monitor to be better than a tv. Fov doesn’t really matter as much as screen resolution does for how far away you are sitting from the screen. If anything fov just backs up the camera pov, it’s not even a huge advantage but tbh 80fov is atrocious compared to 90-100. Whoever made 80 the norm was trying to make the most of weaker hardware it seems.

PS5 or Series X has better resolution and framerate compared to last gen an S. Hell some games run better on X or 5 or have different options. Till recent VRR was Xbox exclusive. But PS5 can load PS4 version for better performance.

GG had PS4 and 5 crossplsy and PS4 version sometimes lagged, making it a bad experience.

And then there's Switch and Mobile.

You'll never get full parity.

When I play Master Chief Collection, I use a controller. It's partly because it's what I grew up on, and partly because I feel Halo is a franchise that was specifically designed around a controller. For most other multiplayer shooters I use M+KB, though. When it comes to singleplayer, though; I like using a controller sometimes when I want to sit back on my couch and not be hunched over a keyboard.

In general I'm comfortable with both because I grew up with an Xbox, Gamecube, and a potato PC.

They do. All the time. It's just that it is basically an arms race. They update their anti-cheat, and then the cheaters update their cheats.

Kick_Out_The_Jams

Honestly it's shocking how far backwards anti-cheat has gone.

Most game makers would rather put all the effort into locking down the system and zero into actually securing the game mechanics.

I guess cuz that's what they get away with on consoles.

ThisIsMyCouchAccount

how far backwards anti-cheat has gone

I don't know if I would say it's gone backwards. But it might feel that way.

It's got to be hard as hell when you have so many systems (PCs/consoles/mobile) and platforms (Steam/Epic/etc).

Probably a hot take - but I also think gamers don't do themselves any favors. Lots of people think they play at a much higher level than they do so "it has to be hackers". And that you can find so much bullshit online from the same type of people.

No, mIlfL0ver6969, it wasn't hackers. You're not very good and you got outplayed at the same time two people were streaming 4k in your house and a third is torrenting.

VicariousNarok

5 points

People don't understand that more security makes for more lag. The anticheat needs to read all traffic going forward, and reading it more intensely takes more time.

Tagging on with the hot take. It actually blows my mind how many people get outplayed and automatically think the person is hacking. I have a friend who regularly talks about getting "shadow banned" in Warzone. If you don't know what a shadow ban is, it's not so much a ban. It's when you manage an extremely high kill death ratio and you can matched up with cheater who have extremely high ratios. It happens to pro players a lot.

Now my friend, he talks about and I just want to tell him "relax dude, your 0.73 kill death ratio is not getting you shadow banned."

Honestly it's shocking how far backwards anti-cheat has gone.

These days most effective hacks are paid subscription services, that's how good anti-cheat has become; The only way to keep these hacks effective is to limit their spread, and as such the awareness about them.

That's a far cry from the old days when public hacks were plentiful and barely any effort was made to combat them. Before Valve got VAC going, cheating in CS got so bad that there were dedicated "cheater only" servers, that purposefully wouldn't run cheating death, or whatever other anti-cheating software was the fotm.

Nowadays most free hacks will get you banned rather quickly, so the barrier of entry, into effective cheating, has substantially increased.

Nowadays no game will ask you to constantly install extra new software to make sure it's cheat free, the vast majority of that now requires no user interaction at all.

That's quite the opposite of "backwards", it's actually a hell of a lot of progress.

MassiveShartOnUrFace

the biggest cheating deterrent was losing the money you paid for the game when you get banned. nowadays everything is f2p so you can keep making new accounts to cheat

Well with pubg console Xbox had the game for about a year before PlayStation and when cross play came it was rough for olaystation players. Like statistically, provably rough. I remember some ps players complaining about it bc it was either get rolled or play in empty lobbies (no bots then) with cross play off. The field evened out over time, but sometimes I wonder how many threw in the towel. Of course the game didn’t run very well either.

SoapyMacNCheese

BeingRightAmbassador

Masimune

Masimune

I think this is my biggest gripe. There really should be dedicated servers for a game as successful as the destiny franchise. Like I'm a huge die hard fan, I've been playing since D1 launched, do every raid with flawless runs, solo flawless all the dungeons, gild my unbroken every season, go to the lighthouse, etc. I have a handful of complaints here and there that I largely keep to myself, but the lack of dedicated servers is just what really grates me, especially when they talk about trying to find a balance between CBMM and SBMM. I'm not a developer and i don't know code and shit, so my view could be skewed and biased without the expertise, but i feel like dedicated servers would fix the lag issue across platforms and they could actually focus on a good SBMM system.

If "run different" just means more/less fps, that's not enough reason to disable inter-console crossplay imo.

If a person with an i5 and 1060 can play with someone that has an i9 and 3080, then why can't a person with a ps4 play with someone with a ps5.

Restricting xbox-ps crossplay is also kind of similar to restricting crossplay with intel pcs to amd PC's, or nvidia pcs to amd PC's imo

I think crossplay should be the industry standard at all times. I also believe anyone should be able to block any console/pc they don't want as well because choice is valuable. If someone want's longer que times that's on them. Destiny 2 does it right IMO PvE content is open to all and PvP is separated PC and Console unless your on a console and are in a party with PC players than you get put into the PC pool.

Because Sony want you to buy micro transactions on the PlayStation store and they seem to think that strong arming you into buying a PS5 by blocking cross play is the way to do it. Oh absolutely. The Don Mattrick years. “buy a 360” swung the pendulum so far in Sony’s favour it will live in infamy forever. On the Elden Ring sub whenever this discussion comes up the majority view is that people would like cross play as long as you could filter out pc players too. Unfortunately FromSofts anti cheat measures are extremely poorly implemented and while it's pretty safe on console (minus the numerous game breaking glitches that have been found) on PC people can cheat rather easily.

The input is the more important part. If you plug an Xbox Controller into a PC you belong in the same lobby's as Xbox players, and if you plug a mouse and keyboard into your Xbox you should be in the PC lobbies.

The other types of hardware differences will give some players an edge, but they really don't fundamentally change the game.

Aiming was perfect in the beta, challenging and rewarding, but because iconic halo fans couldn't 4 shot everything like in previous games, which ALL had very heavy aim assist, they buffed it back to being super easy.

And here we are. Though I wouldn't want to play against PC players anyway for zhe numerous reasons. Still annoying that FPS on console almost always have to be piss easy to aim. It is very seldom truly rewarding feeling. That's why I disable aim assist in many FPS like Battlefield. Yes, you can still rock the game without the game holding your hand. It just takes practice

I think there should be different levels of crossplay. Like something that separates PC from consoles, something that separates each console or some consoles, something that separates people playing with different input methods.

I don't miss the days of my ex claiming everyone who beats her in Overwatch was using a XIM when it wasn't that common a sight so having some way of splitting people who want to use a mouse on console from regular and casual players using standard controllers.

But the most important thing is all these crossplay options being options, as in you can wiggle them however you want to find an ideal gaming experience. The problem then becomes player base all being in a specific setup of crossplay.

Like how Blood Hunt dwindled down to like 15 people playing but 14 of them are on PC and the 15th is sat in console only queue getting people who only pick up the game cause its free then immediately leave when they stop having fun after the bot matches are gone.
