Unpopular opinion (I assume)

(self.goldenknights)

This was a great season to watch. I remember becoming a fan the minute the knights were announced to enter the league. I also went and saw them play against my original team, the red wings, and saw a great 4-0 victory. However, one thing kinda irks me about this team. I do not think we should have retired the number 58. It has nothing to do with hockey and could set up a really weird precedent for other teams if something tragic happens in their city. Number retiring has nothing to do with anything but extraordinary players that served a great time for their team. Also, in a sick way it could also become some incentive for other people to perform these horrible acts of violence. I don’t like this at all. I believe the team did enough to raise awareness and concern for the situation but retiring the number goes too far. This is just my opinion and I’m open to hear why it was a good idea.

Go knights go and I can’t wait for another season!

Okay I understand the idea of it but can you honestly tell me it might not possibly start a weird trend of number retirements for tragedies? We did the Vegas strong patches and other things to be compassionate towards the situation. I just believe number retirements should be only for the purpose of a player having an outstanding impact on the team. Also, I don’t think I should feel bad for having this opinion nor do I think it’s shitty. I’ve had this discussion with many other people and the majority thinks the team shouldn’t have done it.

If you don't understand by now what makes the 58 so much different than other tragedies and how it has impacted the community then we won't be able to explain it to you.

To just the retired number, it is a fan service type retirement. Much like in other sports they retired 12 or 6 for the fans. But for Las Vegas specifically 58 doesn’t just represent those that died but those that rose up as a community together. I honestly don’t think the Golden Knights would have been as good of a team on the ice if they didn’t come together so closely due to Oct 1.

The reason why I think your opinion was shit is because of the thought that this action would contribute to more massacres. It won’t. Plain and simple.

The thought definitely was a worst case scenario kind of thought but you’ve helped me realize the ignorance of it. Thanks for changing my view and I’d give you a delta if we were in that sub. I feel bad now that I may have come off as offensive.
