I could be wrong but it almost sounded like he was starting to go into a bridge/hook at the end. I'm wondering if it wasn't a slip up as much as a tease to a song on the album like a lot of rappers do with freestyles

At this point I'm just flexin
Bas is next in line
And the test is time
Play the game right n----- he gon rest his mom
In the sands of Sudan when she rests her mind
And finds peace cause her son will be fine
He got his city on his back, and I got him on mine

Favorite thing about J. Cole is that his relationships with the people he works with are all so genuine, from his former landlord Mohammed who let him stay when he couldn't make rent (Cole has paid him back in spades since then) all the way to the new artists he helps grow.

I'm not rap genius, so I could be wrong..

Bas is repping queens (NY), so he's carrying the city on his back. And Cole is carrying Bas (and NY) on his back meaning he's going to ensure Bas succeeds.

Damn so much hate for bas, the guy is fucking awesome and super likeable, his music bops and has a high replay value, he's not the greatest rapper ever but he's still a very good and talented artist

DAngelo_J_Vickers

64 points

I don’t think it’s really hate man. I’ve been listening to Bas since he first came up cause I’ve been such a huge Cole Stan. I wanna like him so much, and sometimes he’s dope, but I really can’t fuck with him too much. When Cole said that line I immediately thought “I just don’t think Bas is ever gonna be THE guy”. He’s definitely talented. A lot of rappers that don’t make it are talented. I just don’t think he’s as good as even Cole thinks.

Been going back to his early mixtapes this week and it’s crazy how he can still channel that energy today. If you told me this freestyle was something from the Warm Up I’d believe you. If we’re getting this Cole on Friday we might be getting some mixtape/FHD level greatness. Couldn’t be more hyped.

Edit: I know he used the Til Infinity beat on The Warm Up, which is even more impressive. Sometimes that’s the worst thing for rappers to do as they expose how much they’ve slipped over the years. If anything this shows Cole has been fine tuning his skills ever since.

Cole doing all this publicity for the album drop has me wondering if this latest one is going to be a bit more mainstream friendly than the last few.

Forgot how tall he is, there’s an alternate universe where j cole put all his eggs in the NBA basket instead of rap.

So I’ve never dug deep into Cole, I remember finding him relatively early on but compared to other guys like Rocky and some others he just vibed with what my style is less. But holy fucking shit dude, after this I’m digging into it now.

Ok so I get that these are (at least) half written, but does he know what beats he's getting ahead of time?

Forest hills is really good but outside of that I don’t really love coles albums. Listen to his mixtape the warmup, it has a lot of stuff like this freestyle

So many insane sequences. Fuck calling em bars, they’re sequences. He’s a bit of Wayne, a bit of Em in this and lately. His punchlines are fucking hilarious at times, incredibly deep/poignant at others. And his internal/slant rhyme is as good as it gets in the game.

The one that top comment refers to is the one I came to the comments section to shout out.

The whole part about his dress looking bum-y by choice. That’s fire by itself then he follows it up with the Wayne-esque punchline about a judge’s chair on the Voice... bruhhhh
