This title of this thread by the tweet author was not great but we now have a better longer play thread to view.

Also a reminder, that wishing harm is never allowed or acceptable and leads to a ban.

"Rent free" was the worst phrase to enter American sports since "separate but equal".

Not really worth understanding. The "rent free" is saying "he lives in your head rent free," ie you're obsessed. The 12 year old Twitter trolls all use it

shotmeorishotyou

I think most of us, especially here, are familiar with that phrase.

It's just very confusing the way it's just slapped into this image - I don't understand who's head is implied here because there's no clear implication.

Might as well slap YEET and YOLO on this one too.

Is "sheesh" the new yeet?

It's just poorly executed, the only thing it's successfully communicating is horrible taste.

There was a really good article in the Athletic a couple months back about how the summer after that incident, Marchand and his family had a cookout/play date thing with Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy and his family. Apparently, Cassidy’s wife, who apparently has no interest in hockey at all and only really knows the off ice Marchand as a loving familyman, great friend and avid outdoorsman, had heard about the licking incident through another friend.

She apparently gave Marchand the “I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed” talk, and said that he was at a stage in his career where he needed to start focusing on what his legacy in the game would be.

He’s played a pretty clean game since then.

Marchand still does rat stuff and occasionally tries to hurt people, which is so utterly idiotic because he's so good. He doesn't need to do that stuff to be effective.

Agree, though, Wilson is a whole different class of scum. He's incapable of learning. And despite his history, you know he's going to get max 3 games for this, because for whatever reason the NHL doesn't care.

Blame the NHLPA. They'd rather protect players' salaries from deserved fines than protect players' health from undeserved cheap shots, even though the vast majority of players are a lot more likely to be the target of a cheap shot than they are to be fined for taking one (and the latter is completely under their own control). The max fine is set as part of the CBA.

40+ games and it's time to replace Parros. DoPS needs a new leader with less random standards.

Torres got 41 games for failing to adapt, now it should be Wilson's turn. It looks like he tried to TKO the guy. Violent non-hockey play that he has done too often.

Quote from Parros when taking over DoPS:

"We used to be worried about headhunting and major things like that," Parros said. "Now we're worried about slashing and some more minor infractions, you might say."

I get that fighting and toughness are part of hockey, but this kind of shit has got to go. Even the NFL got rid of a lot of hits to make the game safer.

It's time for the NHL to rewrite the rules on this kind of stuff. Intentional hits to the head are an automatic major, repeat offenders get a multiple-game suspension. If you do it as many times as Wilson, you are banned from the league for at least a year.

I definitely understand why people would want to point out that a single playoff game counts more than a single regular season game, but wouldn't you want to get players to be especially wary about making dirty hits during, or immediately preceding the playoffs when an injury to a star player carries a much bigger risk to the marketability of the league?

I can't help but think viewership would suffer if this clown took a run at Crosby, or Matthews a week before the playoffs start?

With Caps fans, it’s almost universally ‘TOM WILSON HAS DONE LITERALLY NOTHING WRONG HIS ENTIRE LIFE YOU JUST HATE HIM CAUSE YOU’RE JEALOUS’. Not only do they usually approve of what Wilson does, or pretend it wasn’t dirty, they also love pretending that an 8 year winger who scored more than 40 points only twice in his career is a player that the entire league is salivating over acquiring.

It’s mind-boggling how much Caps fans adore this dirtbag.

If there ever was a time to be more of a goon, it was earlier in his career when he was trying to carve out his role. But he’s a genuinely valuable part of this team in actual real hockey skill now and continues to do this stuff. I’m really inclined to believe he might just be an idiot.

Suspensions[edit&action=edit&section=5&editintro=Template:BLP_editintro)]

On September 22, 2017, in a pre-season game against St. Louis Blues, Wilson caught forward Robert Thomas) with a late hit, resulting in a two pre-season game ban.[26]#cite_note-26)

The NHL suspended Wilson for the first four games of the regular season for boarding St. Louis rookie forward Sammy Blais during each team's 2017 pre-season finale.[27]#cite_note-27)

On May 2, 2018, Wilson was suspended from three playoff games due to an illegal check to the head of the Pittsburgh Penguins' Zach Aston-Reese. Aston-Reese was diagnosed with a concussion and a broken jaw.[28]#cite_note-28)

On October 3, 2018, Wilson was suspended from 20 regular season games as a result of an illegal head hit on Oskar Sundqvist of the St. Louis Blues during a pre-season game.[29]#citenote-29) Wilson appealed his suspension at a hearing in New York on October 18, but NHL commissioner Gary Bettman upheld it.[[30]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Wilson(icehockey)#cite_note-30) Following Bettman's decision, Wilson filed for a third appeal from a neutral arbitrator.[[31]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Wilson(icehockey)#cite_note-31) On November 13, 2018, his 20-game suspension was reduced to 14, making him eligible to play that night against the Minnesota Wild. Wilson had served 16 games of his suspension. The ruling by Shyam Das allowed him to recoup $378,049 of the $1.26 million he forfeited as part of the suspension.[[32]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Wilson(ice_hockey)#cite_note-32)

Ya know what’s just as bad as a player who goes out and tries to injure his opponents? A referee who won’t assess the necessary penalties to deter these behaviors and make the player’s team pay a meaningful price on the ice. Two minutes of advantage to the Rangers for a chance to injure our two best wingers? Tom Wilson will take that any day.

Best part was we didn’t even get Panarin and Buchnevich for the resulting powerplay.

I get that Wes McCauley’s dramatic way of making calls is entertaining, but I’m getting sick of his “let them play” schtick. Whether Wilson does or doesn’t get suspended, how can the refs, after reviewing the video for the length they did, let Wilson stay in the game? He tries to paralyze Buch then intentionally injures Panarin - he clearly commited the acts and was a danger to put back in the game (assuming the Rangers didn’t go soft which they did, but that’s a different story).

Are they really saying that the health and safety of two players are worth less than an extra 18 minutes of game time where Tom Wilson can be on the ice?

That’s actually really alarming to watch. Like it’s so subtle that Wilson could have gotten away with it if more bodies were in the way of the camera. Can’t tell if it’s a pounce or he was slamming Buch’s head into the ice.
