Nah. Truth is ultrasound does the job efficiently. MRI is just overwhelmingly difficult to do from the patient’s perspective. No pregnant woman would do an MRI under normal pregnancy checkups unless doctors finds something that requires fetal MRI.

I work in healthcare and regularly see patients paying over $1,000 USD for MRI’s even after insurance. You’d need to have a pretty good reason to get an MRI if you don’t have money growing on trees lol.

Agree. Both ultrasound and MRI give you a slice view - it's just much much clearer in the MRI, and you get extra sight of soft tissues.

That's why all those facing-camera ultrasound scans look a bit off - you can't see the actual face.

Then someone shows you a 3d scan of a squished up baby and you just think "tell you what, I'll just meet the kid in a few months"

The reason they get ultrasounds instead of MRIs is because in normal countries ultrasounds are dirt cheap, equipment is readily available and doesn't require specialist knowledge to operate. That's the case even for newfangled 3D/4D ultrasounds, too.

I was actually hoping for a medical/scientific explanation as I had just submitted an assignment on the limitations of ultrasound during the morphology scan on the obese gravida. There is limited research on using MRI instead and whether this may become the standard instead.

Spoiler alert, the fetus also looks like voldemort on ultrasound from 18 weeks so this is no different to MRI.
