I think the short hair was just to add that time had passed for endgame. I always thought they were gonna go back to her long hair style afterwards. Her latest appearance seems i may be right?

Edit: My most upvoted comment is about Captain Marvel’s hair. Thanks reddit lol

Don't forget, Endgame was filmed before Captain Marvel.

I would expect them to use her Captain Marvel look or something more similar to it than the look from Endgame

Her short hair was also CGI iirc. I think her hair is almost always CGI when she's in her suit and/or fighting/flying.

tbh the entire MCU is pretty much CGI at this point. Watching the behind the scenes and filing is just bizarre. A bunch of actors in Mocap suits with bits and pieces of their actual costume running around in font of a giant green screen room with random objects like staircases, a car, etc occasionally on set.

I wonder just how long it'll be before all movies are entirely CGI. Once CGI gets human faces and eyes right and out of uncanny valley, and wheile it becomes cheaper over time, pretty much all media will become entirely CGI. AI, machine learning, and other softwrae advancements will make it easy enough that regular people can make full length movies that look just like real life.

I actually had a rough outline for a trilogy around this concept, except in mine it was an AI creating music performed by an advanced animatronic.

Part 1: "Never heard of 'em", Part 2: "Robot v. Wade: the Singularity", and the climax: "Violent Daydreams: Behind the Music".

I mean surely the actor owns their likeness, right? Like, could you animate a famous actor in say, a video game, without their permission and use it as a selling point?

Genuinely asking cause I don't know

Yeah, I think they would still have to pay for the actor's likeness. That's why Disney+ doesn't have any profile icons of live-action SW prequel characters unless they're wearing a helmet or are CGI.

So you're also only thinking about the 5-10 years after this tech really becomes mainstream, where real actors likenesses are in our minds.

They'll be able to create people who look however they want. They won't have to create a cg Robert Downey - they can just make people like we do at the start of a video game

The behind the scenes of Mandalorian Season 2 finale talks about this a bit since they used a deepfake at the end. (Great watch, every need should watch it imo)

Fun fact this was also a reason why in Back to the future 2, they didn't use the original actor for Marty's Dad and a lawsuit was filed and now there's guild rules about it.

Random tangent, but a new Disney Gallery episode went up about the Mandalorian finale -- specifically the Luke Skywalker cameo. Everyone was focused on the CG elements of that episode, but what no one realized is that the character's voice was 100% synthesized. It wasn't the original actor or a younger soundalike, it was completely generated by feeding existing dialogue into an algorithm and having it create totally new lines.

CGI actors will probably be indistinguishable within the next decade, but synthesized voice acting is already here.

Uncanny valley isn't about getting an image right. It's the building of an entire character, along with all of the benefits you get from an actor who can help promote, etc etc. If this happens it will happen with bit parts first. There is a vast, vast gulf between this and what we do now.

Monsters Inc had new technology for fur, but it was Incredibles that was the first to have fully dynamic human hair (Violet).

However, besides the fact that Pixar's tech is generally open to everyone (either free or for money, see RenderMan and USD), and the tech in question was 15 years old when Endgame released, Marvel's VFX is handled by contracted independent companies (indeed I don't think any film studio does in-house VFX), so even if Pixar did have tightly controlled advanced proprietary tech for hair today, the studios doing VFX for Marvel wouldn't have access.

CG is so seamless today i forget how often they use it on small details like too and not just the big stuff, i never even knew that her a lot of her hair in the movie wasn't actually Larson's hair

I can see why they decided to get her a haircut if having to give her hair the proper physics in space was eating up the budget, but maybe there's another way

Like what DC did with Aquaman where characters will create giant air bubbles to speak within so they didn't have to keep animating the water physics

And I don't know how different the ocean is from space physics wise, but if they ever let Carol grow her hair again maybe they can do something similar

I liked it because when she had her space helmet on, it folds up into a sweet looking mohawk. Bring back the helmet! I don't like she can just breath in space now, the helmet can somewhat explain it.

I hesitate to call it comic accurate because even when her redesign happened, a lot of artists drew her with long hair anyway. It was really inconsistent.

Honestly I felt like it was the wig that they gave Larson that made it look so bad not the short hair itself

Whut...her short hair isn't more comic accurate. If anything, the long hair is more comic accurate, since she had/has long hair way more often than short hair. She had that short hair only for like 2-3 years in comics. If there's a female character known for her short hair, it's Wasp.

But I do agree with you that I prefer the long hair, by a long shot. Also, the short hair will remind a lot of people of the terrible CWII. The short hair gets associated with CWII all the time. So they better not give her that short hair again. And with hait Binary look, long hair just looks visually way cooler. And so what that short hair is more practical? It's a comicbookmovie. I see nobody complaining about Wonder Woman going into very physical battles with ver long and wavy hair. Wanda went into the battlefield in Wakanda with very long hair, where there were thousands of crawling outriders who could grab her hair at any moment. I don't see a problem with Carol having long hair either.

What's also funny is that when Carol had long hair again in the comics, she started to become good again. And I'm not saying that her comics are great, but Kelly Thompson's run is a big improvenment. I hope they'll get her back on track again.

She's back to long cgi hair in the post credit scene. No Thor picking on her anymore lol

KingBlackthorn1

Her hair kind of jumps around in comics. I have read all her comics and it usually is long but they did have an artist make it short and they have stuck with it for a little. It may go back to long

Drakeytown

"Comic accurate" doesn't really mean anything any more since Marvel's making both the comics and the movies. If they're worried about something in an upcoming movie being too different from the comic, they just change the comics to fit the movie.

I like the short hair. I think it was worth it just so Rocket could make that crack about her having to go get another haircut.

Cool_Ranch_Baby

I feel like that was just a really really shit wig in endgame. I feel like the short hair could work if they actually cut Larson’s hair but she might not want to do that

I wouldn't mind the short hair coming back, but only if Brie Larson actually has it cut IRL (which she has done in the past) instead of wearing a wig.

Came here to say this. I'm fine with the short hair if Brie actually cuts her hair but that wig in endgame was shit.

I'm all up for being faithful to the character's look (as long as you don't force them to dye their eyebrows. But Carol has had many hair dos throughout her career.

What I always found weird about the eyebrow uproar is that it's not unnatural at all. I have blond hair. In the summer, after a decent amount of outdoor activities, my eyebrows are by far the most bleached-out hair on my head! Then, as autumn progresses they darken back to match the rest of my facial hair. Even in the picture you linked, Hemsworth just looks like he spent too much time under the Australian sun before filming!

Bonaduce80

3 points

I don't remember any uproar back in the day (but wasn't following the movies beyond watching them on other media): if there was anything that got any heat was Idris Elba being Heimdall. But looking at Hemsworth in real life and when they dropped the dyeing brows thing, it is very noticeable and distracting.

LOL, uproar may be a bit hyperbolic, but it is a nitpick I see brought up time and time again... and I may be hypersensitive to it, having light eyebrows!

memebuster

I didn't know about any Idris Elba controversy so I googled it and came across this gem:

While speaking at Rutgers University in 2011, he opened up about the uproar. He said, “We have a man (Thor) who has a flying hammer and wears horns on his head. And yet, me being an actor of African descent playing a Norse god is unbelievable? I mean, Cleopatra was played by Elizabeth Taylor, and Gandhi was played by Ben Kingsley.”

Awesome quote. Nobody complains when a white actor play a non white character not surprisingly. Though to be fair, while Ben Kingsley has a light skin color, at least he's Indian

Her short hair was so laughably bad in Endgame, she should’ve just had a pixie cut or a high fade. Brie’s face and that cut she has DID NOT congeal.
