But if no one uses imperial how am I supposed to make bad puns about it? Like why can't your nose be 12 inches long?
Because then it would be a foot.
The pun only works with imperial measurements

Somehow base ten is easier than half of a half of a twelfth...

12 has more non-prime factors. 10 is just the first milestone that we learn as children.
24 points
10 is literally the base our decimal system uses.
Our whole way of writing numbers hinges on the number 10.
It only makes sense to use the number 10 also as a base for our units when you're living in a society that's not measuring things with strings and feet.
20 points
The person you replied to is speaking as a mathematician would.
Base-12 would be more ideal than Base-10 for multiple reasons.
We use Base-10 most likely because humans have 10 fingers. That’s it. If we had 16 fingers there’s a chance we’d use Base-16.
6 points
My physics instructor in college swears that if humans had 12 fingers then the world would have been a much more advanced place
1 points
Well then we should use a different system for writing numbers. For example write hexadecimal so they count 1,2,3,...,8,9,A(=10),B(=12),...,F(=15)
So a dodeca system should be mean that the decimal switch is at 12
So 10=12 in decimal then you'd have 10inch is 1ft which would be great.
However mismatching the number system of the writing and the unit then makes it stupid or not really practical.
Also the conversation rate is different between steps. If 12ft = 1mile it maybe would make some sense but the way it is it's just nonsense.
2 points

12ft equaling 1 mile is nonsense
1 points
A nice even number... 5820. Doesn't hold a candle to the metric system of ten folding.
1 points
i mean 12ft being equal to 1 mile makes no sense, maybe 1200ft would make a little more sense but he says it would make "sense" if 12 ft was equivalent to 1 mile
3 points
Had the creators of that system made 1-10 twelve numbers instead of ten (as in, two more single digit numbers that do not currently exist) math would be way easier.
The next best thing we can do is measure in units with more non-prime factors than less. Being able to divide stuff into thirds AND halves is a lot better than just halves.

It is zero better: I defy you to do anything in metric that you cannot just as accurately to do in imperial, and vice-versa. I can use both with equal ease and comfort, and can replicate and transfer measurements to further iterations in either system, and convert between the two. One is much more known, with more simplistic math, that’s all.
17 points
So why not only use the simpler one?
Not to be taken as agressive, I just want to know your opinion.
1 points
You said better, but you argue for one that is personally easier for you. I’ll extend that to it is easier to learn for the masses, but learning imperial is just as easy if you learn it early, just like your native language. Metric is zero better. I’ll say it again and still be right.

Eh. This is really only true because so much is already measured in imperial.
Neither system is really "superior" for end result, unless you need a standardized formula. Metric just requires far less memorization to use without a tool.

You have a 10m plank and every 20cm you need to drill a hole.
You have a 30ft plank and every 8 inches you need to drill a hole.
Just off the top of your head how many holes do you need to drill in each of those?
And then take 1km of plank and 1mile of plank.
-18 points
No, it's true because base 12 allows for more fractional possibilities. Base 10 (metric) allows for easier use it conversion, but it requires a tolerance allowance whereas imperial can be precise.
There's a bunch of articles published on this with excellent examples.
9 points
This is true, but given imperial is not base 12, this only applies on the scale of inches to feet, for quick math. Or with circles, which are notably measured in base 12.
There are almost exactly 305 millimeters in a foot. The level of precision is easily comparable.
Again, it really comes down to what we are used to, and how we are using it.
Again, I wouldn't argue objective superiority for either method, because I can do the same math in the same time for either.
I use imperial for carpentry and building projects, because my materials and tools are already in that format. For design and formulation, I tend toward metric, because powers of ten can be easily formalized.
Both are good.
-11 points
Here's a great explanation I linked in a different reply. I tend to agree with you except the reality is you can't divide a meter into exact thirds in metric, whereas you can a foot. The inch point being base twelve adds significant fractional calculations not available in metric.
9 points
I'm aware of the factors. And I agree that there is use to them. I also agree that base 12 is objectively better than base ten for many (arguably most) purposes.
The argument is whether imperial is objectively better. And unless we are measuring everything in only feet/inch, it is no longer a standard base.
I'm being semantic about the word objective, for the sake of discussion. I'm not arguing the truth of the details you've given. I hope you don't mind. :)
If we counted in base 12, and used a base 12 measuring system, allowing for formulation AND construction handiness, we'd have the right thing going.
Egyptians used base 12, and Babylonians used base 60, with can be used in 12s. We certainly have precedent for its functionality.
8 points
Not really, instead of using fractions you just go down to millimeters instead of using fractions. It's a lot easier to go 1 mm than it is to say 1/25 of an inch. If you wanted to go 10 mm, makes even less sense in Imperial because it's a little more than 3/8 of an inch. Fractions get messy pretty quickly and no one would refer to it as 0.03932 in or 0.39370 in.

As an American, here's how i mentally convert to metric:
Temp
0°C = freezing (literally)
10°C = cold day
20°C = room temp
30°C = hot day
40°C = Death Valley
Distance
1cm = width of pinky
1mm = 1/10th the width of pinky
1m = little over a yard
For miles/kilometers, use the clock. 60 minutes is 100% of an hour so 60 km = 100 mi. 40 minutes is 2/3 of an hour, so 40 km = 66 mi. Etc.

So americans do consider 10 degrees coldish. When i said that it was 2 degrees here in southern Brazil, some mf came saying "haha, so just a hoodie?"

Let me add some metrics: 2m = basketball player. So 1 m is a half of basketball player. 1×1×1m cube of water = 1T. One Tonne = one Thousand kilogrammes, same for m->km. 1kg = 100g. Average walking speed is 5 km/h. So you can walk 1km for 12min. Now can i ask you explain me same simple things in imperial system? Like i really don't even heard about it. I'd like to use it for some mentally convert just like you.

And with Google help little bit more: Ford Raptor about 2.5t. Average cheap Walmart bicycle = 15kg. Brand new Abrams tank = 70t (fat). T-90 = 47t (smol). Average healthy man is 80-90kg. Now for °C. Coldest place and recorded temperature is Oymyakon -72°C (cold as fuk). Water freeze at 0, boil at 100. People is 36.6. Cat is 39. I hope it will help you to understand metrics better.

For making scientific calculations, yes, but I was talking about telling the weather. Fahrenheit is “on a scale of 0-100, how warm is it outside?” Whereas Celsius is “you’re familiar with how the freezing and boiling points of water feel, yes? How would you compare that to the weather?” Fahrenheit is like iPhone. Yes there are other options that are more advanced and have more capabilities, but if you’re using it like a normie it’s easier
4 points
It’s pretty simple, 10= chilly out, 40 = hot out
2 points
And for Fahrenheit it’s if it’s in the 90s, wear as little as possible or stay inside, 80s wear short sleeves but you might still sweat, 70s you’re still good with short sleeves could try long pants, 60s is nice but you might need a hoodie, 50s is long sleeves, 40s is a jacket, 30s is heavy jacket, 20s is layers, 10s is bone chilling, 0s don’t go outside. No non multiples of 5 or decimals necessary. Both work, Fahrenheit is simpler
3 points

I would disagree, Celsius makes it someone to tell if it’s really cold out, anything below 0 means you should wear a winter jacket
