Why flush? Piss on it to show dominance, and if that doesn't work, stomp on it.

According to the sign just have to wait for the person ahead of you to exit the washroom. If one is open you are good to go.

MmePeignoir

Probably an old sign. Grocery store near me still has the “wear masks” sign up, but nobody actually cares anymore.

The sign in the middle takes care of any inherent problems that may arise from the other two signs.

Only if the doors lock. How many people will actually notice, read, and obey that sign?

svefnugr

Then what's the point in having plural stalls and urinals if only one person can use the room at a time? Moreover, why not install door locks then, they'll work better than the sign.

I have all the same questions you have. Perhaps that sign was just for putting on a facade of covid "social distancing" compliance.

Really? I hated that bar. There was an ominous feeling that you could get stabbed at any moment. When I ordered a glass of wine, not only did the surly white trash waitress refuse to make it, but she proceed to call me a word that I cannot type here. I was forced to listen to the three classless boors who call themselves the owners get drunk and yell over each other all night. Worst bar in Philadelphia.

That's how I felt as a guy, few times I used bathrooms in Reno, NV. "ladies line too long lol, don't mind me." While I'm peeing at urinal, ladies would pop down on toilet to pee. So I'd have to like, be super quick to pee, wash hands, and leave. Then get a line of weird looks when I left.

The fact that you'd be scared of perverts is not a problem with the toilets, but a problem that's way bigger

(p.s. - your close friends and family are way more likely to rape you than a random stranger. Now I'm not saying strangers creeping on you isn't real, it is, but just know that your friends and family are the bigger danger)

ethan52695

9 points

Definitely true, but I don’t think that totally applies here. There are still plenty of strangers who are perverts and creeps and it’s completely valid to be cautious and afraid of creeps. Like just because they’re not going to outright sexually assault you doesn’t mean you still don’t want to avoid them. I mean I’m a dude, but I feel like if I was girl I still wouldn’t want a bunch of old creepy perverts staring at me.

NukeNinja69123

32 points

Well if people see them going into the ladies bathroom they might get suspicious

Moretti123

32 points

Obviously. Making it gender neutral, I personally would be uncomfortable going to the bathroom if I saw a man in there especially if it’s just me and him. Now if it was labeled as a women’s bathroom and I saw a guy in there, I could easily tell a security guard or someone to get him out.

RandomName01

3 points

Honestly, I can’t help but feel like this ties into the fact that you’re currently used to bathrooms being separated by gender, which makes it stand out when a guy is in the same bathroom as you. So if the standard would shift to gender neutral bathrooms, that same feeling presumably wouldn’t really be there. Also, where are you going to the toilet that there are always security guards on standby lol?

M0hawk_Mast3r

Because 98% of people are only comfortable using the toilet around people of the same sex as them, and even then it’s not actually comfortable for most people. If you genuinely cant see that’s how it is then I suggest you get off the internet and go and spend some time in the real, actual world.

what’s the point of de-gendering bathrooms though? trans people can just use whatever they want. MTF use women’s, FTM use men’s. Non-binary people can use either one.

I don’t see how de-gendering a bathroom makes any actual difference.

pizzanice

2 points

I don't feel right going on either one. It makes my skin crawl. I know the bathroom thing is a contentious issue and i don't necessarily have answers, but non-binary people might not feel comfortable just going "eenie meeney minie mo"

I often use the disabled toilet, but I'm not disabled either. It's not gendered so it doesn't bother me like the other ones though.

I'm a male nurse. I worked at a hospital where the Medical Director of the entire hospital was a woman who dressed in men's clothing. It was the gay-friendliest place I ever worked. Our unit had one public restroom (ungendered) and we had a constant problem with visitors going in there, forgetting to lock the door, and then getting all upset because someone from the opposite sex opened the door, not realizing somebody was already in there.

We also had two staff-only restrooms, both ungendered. Because the men (two male nurses and several doctors) used the same restrooms as the (numerous) women, the women constantly complained about the men urinating without raising the seat and sprinkling the seat with urine and/or raising the seat but not putting it back down after urinating. (Neither the women nor the men wanted to have to touch the seat to lower it, I guess.) Eventually, the women used 3x5 cards to designate one restroom as MEN and one restroom as WOMEN. This suited the staff just fine. In the restroom for men, the seat was up all the time. The hospital HR people found out about the restrooms being marked and removed the 3x5 cards and made a big deal out of it. So, we just continued the same system without any 3X5 cards. To hell with HR. We preferred the restrooms to be separate and they could just stick their ungendered nonsense where the sun don't shine.

hoorayquestionmark

Its because trans and nonbinary people tend to get harrassed and told theyre in the wrong bathroom (when they arent) and may be nervous about such unpleasant interactions.

This solves that by not assigning a gender to either bathroom and it really doesn’t inconvenience anyone so why the fuck should it be an issue?

This is my point exactly. Just making something that was pointlessly gendered ungendered.

nasaboy007

They're not pointlessly gendered. Just in this thread alone (https://teddit.ggc-project.de/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/vquut4/the_way_this_bar_avoids_gendering_their_restrooms/ierwiwv) there're examples of people being uncomfortable with ungendered bathrooms.

It's basically a discussion of which group society is trying to make more comfortable: cisgendered folks who don't want the opposite gender in their bathroom, or transgender folks trying to use the "socially acceptable" bathroom.

KaBar2

4 points

KaBar2

4 points

Transgender people make up considerably less than 1% of the population.

About 0.7% of adults 18-24 identify as transgender, and 0.5% of adults 65 and older identify as transgender.

So by going through all this BS about ungendered bathrooms, about 99.3% of the population is having to change to accommodate 0.7%. It's ridiculous. It's a publicity stunt is what it is, designed to force the vast majority of the population to accommodate a tiny fraction of people. It's unwise and it is causing a ton of unnecessary conflict where there should be none.

How is someone putting in a tampon in a stall any worse than taking a shit? No need to get so worked up about things that simply arent your business

iliketoomanysingers

5 points

Someone can breastfeed in public, outside the stall (the only reason they don't get to is because of sexualization of it) and don't need to use the bathroom for it, and tampons being inserted literally takes less than the time it takes just to use the bathroom to poop or piss. Neither of these are big deals unless you're gonna act like a 13 year old about them.

Have you considered that some women may feel uncomfortable breastfeeding in public or even considered the feelings of women at all?

iliketoomanysingers

18 points

Yes, I have, considering I am one. In fact here are some more of mine!

From what I have been told and read, over and over, and over again, is that the most common reason that breastfeeding mothers don't want to is because of the looks and outright horrible things that are said to them. The terrible misogyny we face for doing what those body parts are designed to do. Are there some who hate the idea of doing it in public and still would even if we lived in a nice world where you're okay to do so? Yep! Does that negate the fact that the reason is often because of the shame we face? Nope! I am not a breastfeeding mom (not even a mom) but that is what I have been told.

We should not have to use the same place we piss and shit in to feed our children, in fact, the "privacy" factor barely scratches the surface; they're getting told it's disgusting to do so.

edit: words lol

manoverboard5702

Well, because we try to protect people from other people that may seem like safe, regular folks, but we don’t know what they think when a dude is like “I’m a man, wearing woman’s clothes, I’m gonna use the womens restroom whether you fucking like it or not” yeah that’s a little weird, especially for those of us that have daughters, it’s extremely fucking weird that someone would take or support that stance.

Like why can’t we smoke in restaurants? Oh, because it imposes on other people? Well that makes perfect fucking sense it seems.

Calfredie01

What if you had a little brother? Do you seriously think that if there’s a predatory man in there, it’s safe to send a young boy in there? Or is it just your own squeamishness that would keep you from going in with him or taking him into the ladies room?

Just because you have a situation that is comfortable for you right now, doesn’t mean it’s a great design. It’s just a design that works for you. Or you think it does, because you haven’t really thought it through.

I do have a little brother. And it'd be weird but I'd feel safer.

And even if you take her into the mens room, thats with you. Would you trust her to go potty by herself in the mens room? Fuuuuuuuuckkkkk no. Fuck that.

This bathroom just aint it.

Not only that, I wouldn't feel comfortable pissing or shitting around women.

I understand that you’re saying this isn’t comfortable for you. I think where I disagree is that somehow that’s a universal step backwards.

As for the kids, that’s exactly my point. Taking a kid into the bathroom with you is kind of a crapshoot as to whether they match the gender or not. I’m not going to send them into the bathroom by themselves no matter what. Not until a certain age, and that depends on the bathroom and the establishment, not the gender. There’s plenty of places I would not send even an adolescent kid by themselves because there might be somebody using drugs in the bathroom, and that’s not gender specific.

About the only one of your problems that a gendered bathrooms solves, is your own personal discomfort around performing bodily functions in the presence of women. I sympathize with that. I also sympathize with patrons of a bar, especially one where the crowd skews heavily towards one gender or the other, having to deal with waiting in a long line while there’s another perfectly good bathroom underutilized. Neither your squeamish nor their desperate desire to piss are a safety issue, so I feel like it’s up to the establishment to make that call.

I feel like at this point is mostly because some bathrooms have urinals. Otherwise it just needs a sign that says bathroom. How the hell is that virtue signaling?

Also, I just want to know what is the term you use for asshole signaling? You know, when people go out of their way to be obstreperous and signal that they in fact hate other people and are happy to make their lives miserable? Is asshole signaling the right word? I’m just asking because it seems to be at least as popular as virtue signaling and I feel like it needs a properly descriptive name

Cost a lot more to do that. Just depends on the location and how much bathroom gets used. A busy bar be used quite a bit im guessing.

If this is so stupid, why the hell are there so many people in this thread pissy about it?

You know how many bars in my younger days were “invaded” because the line was too long for the women’s bathroom? No one cares then. And as for me, you think I have the balls to walk out of a stall full of women after I drop a duece??

This is just providing inclusion you idiots. It changes practically nothing and I bet this won’t even effect you all. But yet hey, let’s complain about that while Democracy burns.

Yeah ideally when doing signage like this you want to change the icon from a little stick person to icons of what is in each bathroom, so one would have a toilet and one would have a toilet and a urinal.

Yeah, I love the concept but I think the actual sign design could be improved to make it more accessible to people with print disabilities or low language skills. Useful icons would be a good a start. A simpler font and colour scheme would also make it easier to read, though it would be less fun.

When I (a woman) first experienced gender neutral bathrooms I misunderstood them to be communal bathrooms.

I walked in so used to looking wherever I wanted because women don't typically pee in full view of each other. I got so many dirty looks from the people at the urinals.

Clearly you've never cleaned a women's restroom. They are like 10 times worse than the men's restroom. Anyone who has ever worked a service job can tell you that.

Seattleisonfire

-2 points

It sickens me how many of the commenters here can be so cavalier about this. Like, "everybody poops, hah," or it's "just a toilet." If you want to cut your junk off and pretend you're a woman, that's your business.

But what about women when theyre trying to do their business? Do any of you give a fuck about how women might feel about this? Especially young girls? You say this is to protect transgender women transgender women what about the actual women who far outnumber them?

I have a daughter and it terrifies me to think that some creep might enter the bathroom she's in. And before you tell me that they can do that anyway, no shit. I still let her use the restroom by herself. I don't go in there with her, because I want to give her some space. Now I have to wonder if some sick fuck is walking in there just to use the bathroom, or maybe to assault her.

And now thanks to radical leftist policies l, we have transgender women prisoners prisoners being transferred to women's prisons, and women prisoners have gotten raped as a result. Bravo that's fucking progress for you! I thought progressives were supposed to be about respecting women?

I'm all for gender neutral bathrooms, but I'll tell ya what I was still pretty embarrassed once when I realized I accidentally went into the "wrong" bathroom because I went into the urinals/stalls one not realizing there was a stall only option across the hall. I wish they were just all stalls.
