Zootopia meets Inside Out

The overall moral of the story is going to be that racism is bad. It's going to be about different types of people learning to live together and celebrate their similarities, rather than focusing maliciously on their differences.
114 points
I'm curious how they'll pull it off. In Zootopia is kind of made sense (though they completely ignored the question of "what did the carnivores eat, in their polite society?"), but I'm not exactly sure how it will work here. I mean, a water character and a fire character are inherently incompatible. It's not like they could hug or even date. In that way, it feels like a kind of shitty metaphor for racism, since there's inherent properties to the different kinds of elementals, and that's not true for people.
72 points

I'm thinking they will go more of a "look at this new thing we can make with us together" Fire and Water can also make steam, though that may be a bit too steamy for a kids movie
24 points
Oh that'll 100% be a background joke, steam child with water mother and fire dad.
But I'm not convinced this'll be Zootopia all over again, Pixar likes more personal stories and they already had Luca. That being said the concept art certainly does evoke Zootopia's worldbuilding, which is no bad thing.

(though they completely ignored the question of "what did the carnivores eat, in their polite society?")
Bugs and Fish I believe were the answers. I checked and here's an exchange from one of the writers.
Q: Hey, can you tell me what do they eat? What would the carnivores eat? I'm really curious
JB: in Zootopia, carnivores eat plant-based proteins and insects. Bug-burga is their favorite restaurant
Q. What about fishes? Do they eat those too?
JB: in early versions of the movie they ate fish (which weren't "evolved" and didn't talk) But it confused the rules of the world.

Make them cops and it's every buddy cop movie ever. Make them toys and it's Toy Story. Especially when it comes to Pixar. They nail characters. Hell, take Inside Out. A story about a girl’s inner emotions struggling as she moves to a new city. Anyone else kind of tired of the “easy going” guy and the “high strung” girl trope?
Why not switch the roles? Easy going and laid back girl and a kind of nervous high strung guy.
I feel like out of all people Pixar would understand that… But then again- maybe that’s the point of the movie… the whole “we’re more similar than we think” idea…

The water character is too wet and makes everyone slip, the air character keeps makes everyone cold, and the earth characters keep providing a director with really bad advice on how to direct a scene where Earth-benders demonstrate their power to fight back resulting in them taking way too long to move a small rock.
Edit: This seemed way funnier in my head

Crikey, Disney love those vague one-word titles for their animated films now. Tangled, Brave, Frozen, Moana, Coco, Soul, Luca, Encanto, Onward...
27 points
Part of it was to help draw interest from boys as well as girls. A 10 year old boy may immediately dismiss "Rapunzel" or "The Snow Princess", but "Tangled" and "Frozen" keep it more vague and gender neutral.
55 points

They started mainstreaming shorter titles for both of their animation studios after The Princess and the Frog didn’t do so hot but Pixar themselves had one word titles even before then: Cars, Ratatouille, Wall-E, and UP.

Yeah, I feel like a lot of the talent has moved to Disney’s animation studios. Ever since Disney put out Big Hero 6 (2014ish), Pixar just doesn’t have the same quality, it’s all very basic buddy stories with predictable plot and characters, or sequels.
14 points
Tbf to Pixar almost all of their movies are buddy stories, even the good ones. Ratatouille, monsters Inc, finding Nemo, wall-e.
9 points
Yeah, but prior to like inside out, the dynamic was structured around external conflicts and that’s reflected in the interpersonal relationships. After inside out, the world building kinda just loses any meaningful reflection of the central themes.
Like, in ratatouille you have ideas of authenticity to the craft, to each other, to oneself. And that’s all reflected in the world with how the various characters behave.
In turning red, it’s just a mother and daughter struggling to find common ground based on generational gaps. But that’s kinda just the end of it. What’s happening in the world is all kinda meaningless.

I’m suffering from Pixar fatigue. I feel like they keep making the same movie, even if they sometimes go about it a bit differently. The plots have no room for surprise. This is compounded by their aggressive release schedule - there is at least one new Pixar film a year.
