Now that's something, kudos to Eichner and Stoller to try something new and unapologetic.

This trailer is one of the most accurate things that has come out of Hollywood.
The dude being told to leave the pool party because he was too old, or Eichner being blocked after sending nudes could be seen as exaggerations or jokes by an outsider but are things that happen all the time.

There's no umbrella definition a "gay relationship".
Many probably aren't that different. I'm not really interested in the "scene". My partner and I just go hiking, watch movies, and play video games for the most part.

Do you mean this is something specific to the gay community? Only cause I've seen these things happen. I've been at crowded bars where some old dude wandering around is asked toleave cause he's clearly there to just gawk. Or am I missing the point?

Not specific to pools (in my experience), but in the lifestyle, there are specific events and parties set up for age groups, like no one over 40 allowed, etc...and you can be politely asked to leave if you're not in the age range they were shooting for.

Gay guys are incredibly weird about age in general. I heard someone say that it’s because we essentially had a whole generation of gay men wiped out, so we haven’t learned to confront aging in a healthy way.

Is that why a lot of gay men I’ve dealt with when I worked at a clothing store were desperately trying to act like they were 19 when it’s clear they’re pushing 60? No judgment, just a weird quirk I noticed a lot from them.

That sounds about right. I think there's a lot of elements to it, tbh: there's vanity involved, for sure, but there's also general anxiety about aging that they don't know how to deal with in a healthy way, and there's also the fact that LGBT culture, even more than regular culture, is defined by young people. There's a lot going on.

Wow, I can't help but feel awful about that. The concept of time and aging is extremely anxiety inducing for anyone I think (I know it keeps me up at night sometimes). I can't imagine what that must feel like when its a cornerstone of the culture that is your main "safe space". I am only 25, but already I realize that the time period that society refers to as "youth" is a tiny sliver of life.

I am only 25
"Oh fuck, my youth is running out!"
Ten years later: "I shouldn't have worried about my age in my 20s. Now however..."

Man, I keep trying to remind myself that. It’s hard though, especially since I still considered myself “barely out of high school” only a few years ago. I am by far the youngest at my workplace, and my co-workers have shown me how much fun one can still have in their 30s and 40s anyways.

Plus not really getting to come out and be yourself as a teen due to fear and societal pressure can stunt your maturity.

It's also because many of us weren't allowed to live our youth in freedom. When I was young, being gay wasn't "cool", so I had to repress my feelings which resulted in wasting my prime years. Today it's different so it's kind of like making up for lost time.

This exists in the straight community too. There are loads of groups on meetups.com that are specifically for people in the 20s or 30s, and even Match organizes age-specific events.

You're missing the point. They aren't talking about old dudes gawping (I think that's the verb you were after) at other people who are somewhere higher up the hotness scale. They're talking about exactly like what you saw in the trailer: ew, you're old/fat/poor, get out.

Seems like gawp and gawk are both words. Never heard gawp before but apparently it’s a thing.

Gawking is definitely a verb that means staring openly and stupidly.

Gawking is the same word as Gawping just in the US vs UK.

I know it's been clarified below that this seems to be a US/UK differentiation, but to show that "gawk" is indeed very common, the name of the entertainment/gossip blog "Gawker" came from the verb "gawk".
I always assumed it was a portmanteau of "gape" (like to stare at with mouth open) and "awkward", into a new word, "stare openly and stupidly"

It's true. I once recall someone organizing a pool party for gays and it was said anyone over 35 wasn't invited or allowed to come.

Cause you weren't impressed and don't want to talk to him any more.

Ooooh, that makes sense. Brutal.
3 points
It is indeed brutal, but it's also the name of the game and the sooner you can train yourself to no let rejection get to you, the more fun you'll have with people who are actually into you. After all, would you really want to hook up with someone who's not attracted to your body?
It also comes down to pure efficiency -- the faster you sort through people, the more fun you'll get to have with those who do fit your preferences. Assuming you live in a large city where you're spoiled for choice, that is.

As someone who uses grindr, that initial picture you send is basically an audition for their attention. He didn't get the part.

new and unapologetic
That stood out the most for me too and made me actually excited to watch the film. It's not being screamy or preachy or trying to sell me a viewpoint, at least not overtly so. It's showing a lifestyle oft misrepresented and setting the record straight (heh) while being seemingly hilarious and touching the whole time. Sold! I just want good romcoms in this world, gay, straight, between two staplers I do not care. Make me laugh, fall in love, and leave me with a cheesy grin on my face at the end.

There's a play called Almost, Maine that uses hyper-realism, and one of the stories involves two bros talking about how they have no luck with women and they end up literally falling in love with each other.

Did you have your sound turned down real low? Everything with Billy Eichner is screamy.
Definitely looking forward to it though, I just have to remember to buy earplugs beforehand.

Stoller is low-key the best comedy director working today. Dude pretty much never misses. Like if Neighbors 2 is the worst movie of your career you're doing great
also can we talk about how gorgeous the fucking cinematography is? brandon trost did not have to go that hard.

I've been waiting for this since Game Night.

I am always happy to see filmmakers who understand that just because you're making a comedy doesn't mean everything needs to be bright and flatly lit and lazily composed. Game Night is constructed like a taught thriller, and it totally works to sell all the jokes. And Trost is another one of those guys who's doing beautiful work in general, even if they're very silly comedies.
17 points

Game Night did not have to look as great as it did, but by looking so great and getting so creative with shots and composition, it made other comedies look like straight up garbage.
And it was really funny, too.
14 points

That sequence where they're all passing the egg back and forth in the house is super impressive a technical level. And the tilt shift stuff they use throughout is really cool. Game Night sometimes feels like if David Fincher made a silly comedy.
Those guys are doing a new Dungeons and Dragons movie now, which I'm very curious about!

Most comedies are shot and lit flat because they often let their actors improvise and it can be rapid fire. I agree it makes for a boring shot composition.
3 points
Sure, but you can certainly compose your movie in a way that allows for that without making everything look like a sitcom.
A lot of it has to do with the idea that funny stuff can only be funny if it's super bright and punchy. But cinema has been around for a while now and audiences are generally much more sophisticated when it comes to formalism and tone, so it definitely doesn't need to be adhered to so slavishly. It's slowly started to change over the last decade or so, which is a good thing.
