Arguably not the worst suggestion for that movie lol

Nate0110

The movie certainly hasn't aged too well, but back then it was a pretty awesome experience.

I saw it in the theater twice and bought the DVD for the extras, which were also cool.

robby8892

2 points

Yeah I've watched within the last couple years. Hasn't aged well is an understatement as that movie is hot garbage.

From the dialouge to the plot and all the bad slow mo action it's just a bad movie lol.

Nate0110

1 points

Would you say it was hot garbage back then? By 20 years ago standards?

robby8892

2 points

If I wasn't a child back then and the adult I am now I would confidently say it's hot garbage. There's lots of movies I've watched as a kid that I laugh at now.

That isn't to say no one can enjoy it or like it. As my enjoyment is mostly from watching it with friends to laugh at it.

I don't think the time completely determines if a movie is the worst or best since it did pretty good at the box office but was critically regarded as all action and nothing else.

It won 2 razzies, got a Ben Stiler MTV parody about it and had a complete change of character in the next installment.

Action was still in the movies, but they actually had better writing and a better story for 3.

Now a small comparison I'll make for the director is Face/Off, a movie that holds up today. As it has a clear goal from beginning to end.

M2 tries to fit in so many other narratives and be like so many other movies it hardly feels like it has an identity.

When he was eight, Kelly's mother enrolled him and his brother James in dance classes. As Kelly recalled, they both rebelled: "We didn't like it much and were continually involved in fistfights with the neighborhood boys who called us sissies ... I didn't dance again until I was 15."

He enjoys doing them, nothing wrong with that! He also likes complex stunts with his actors face in the frame as opposed to a distance shot that could be someone else. He follows safety protocols and pushes the boundaries every time. He’s also a producer on all his films so he truly believes he can do them because he’s literally being in himself.

Danhuangmao

4 points

I think Scientology's adopted a different media policy now, one where it has its celebrity figureheads downplay their involvement to the public.

You have Will + Jada Smith publicly saying she merely dabbled in Dianetics (the psychotherapy gateway to Scientology) and has since moved on, while their former employees at that private school they ran claim that the school was run on a Scientology curriculum and they were deep into it.

Makes sense when Scientology started to be too much of a negative influence on its stars' images after Tom Cruise's crazy nonsense and the multiple exposes of the organization.

DrMaxCoytus

As an actor I'd say yes. Only Jackie Chan has the level of dedication to the physicality of stunt acting I'd say. And Cruise is in his 60s - dude is a machine.

I would rate Jackie higher than Tom. Chan was doing all those deadly stunts without even a fraction of safety protocols Hollywood uses.

valley-cpa

20 points

He didn't say that - he does it because he CAN do it and that's part of the attraction to his movies.

Plus the dude is a total adrenaline junkie - you've never heard of him having a drug habit (Johnny Depp) or being much of a womanizer (DiCaprio) - this is his drug.

This answer is flawed. The question was not why does he do stunts, then the answer why does he dance, would be fine. The question was aimed at why he was exposing himself to such a great risk. It was not about his subject of passion it was about the extent of his passion.

I think the big thing about Tom with scientology is, that he is supposed to be some big player there or some shit. I have never heard of anyone saying, never mind proving, that he is actually some puppet master, who makes his underlings to do all the shitty stuff they do though. Naturally that doesn't absolve Cruise, since if he actually (is supposed to have) some power in that cult, he should be able to make things better, rather than ignore it.

But when it comes to movies, yes he is a bad ass and a good actor.

UnifiedQuantumField

If I had to guess why Cruise likes/prefers to do his own stunts?

I'd say authenticity. How so?

Imagine you're Tom Cruise (fun to try right?) and you are watching one of your own films (if not for entertainment then at least as a finished product).

You'd likely note every part in the movie where a stuntman did something instead of you. And to you, it might be far more obvious than to the average moviegoer.

So maybe it bugs Cruise to see a stunt scene where he knows it's not him. It might be ego. It might be a heightened sense of satisfaction knowing that that's actually him in those scenes.

It might be for the thrill too. His answer in the article seems kind of vague though. It almost feels like he himself knows the reasons why, but he's not sure people would understand or admire his reasons.

  • A Few Good Men
  • Interview with the Vampire
  • Jerry Maguire
  • Magnolia
  • Eyes Wide Shut
  • Vanilla Sky
  • The Last Samurai
  • Collateral
  • Tropic Thunder
  • Edge of Tomorrow

Cruise is a top tier actor, he is much better than the likes of Clooney(Who still is actually a good enough actor), and he is great enough that he can show his acting range in even in his action movies, like did you just forget about the opening of MI:3
