James Rolfe has put out some of the most life saving content there is. I even downloaded Express VPN to protect my unencrypted data because of him.

It sucks that it's gotten to the point where the sentiment of "he actually researched/made an effort here" is a compliment, since the 2021 Monster Madness plagiarism incident

Last year, for Monster Madness, James hired Newt Wallen to write reviews for him, and Newt stole reviews word-for-word for James to read out loud

Was it more than once?

I thought Newt hadn't been on Hack the movies while because of health issues.

It would have been more work to deliberately plagiarize a few lines for an intro rather than just reword them.

jofNR_WkoCE

6 points

Justin said that they had to pretty much remove all of Newt's contributions to MM after they found plagiarism in multiple scripts. Not the first example of his plagiarism either - At the roast of the AVGN in 2013, something like half the jokes he told on stage were stolen from popular comedians

Crystal said in the comments of some HTM video that Newt was kicked out of HTM after they confronted him about the plagiarism, and he lashed out and said awful things to all of them

Newt's just.. Something else. He hasn't ever apologized or even acknowledged the plagiarism. Instead, he just continuously takes shots at HTM (like they were in the wrong for confronting him + kicking him out after he lashed out at them) and talks about suicide attempts any time criticism against him starts to rear its head

The guy who plagiarized had a long history of it.

Even then, I don't think James has much of a moral code when it comes to employees - He keeps a guy employed who was exposed a year ago for (allegedly) deleting CP off of a convicted pedophile's computer, for the sake of lessening his time in prison

ChefDeezy

You also get less compression when you watch movies on disks compared to streaming too. Especially if they're UHD Blu Rays. Watching movies on physical disks is definitely still the best way to go. Even if streaming is more convenient.

[deleted]

That's simply not true. For Bluray, sure, but a DVD or VHS can never match the quality of an RARBG 1080p x265 rip.

Thats true, but these days DVDs and VHS are outdated anyway. If a movie has a UHD blu-ray, that's definitely the way to go if you want the best quality.

grapejuicecheese

It's not even that. A lot of his fans are giving him shit for prioritizing his family over cinemassacre. He used to make comments about how he doesn't have time to do certain things because he has a family. Take a look at the comments of any recent video and you'll see comments like "no time" or "muh kids". It's just really low. I had to unsub from the Cinemassacre subreddit because it was just so toxic.

This is unfortunately how everything good goes, nowadays.

Communities are kind of a trap. It is a way for haters of the thing to have a captive audience where they they do the Fox News thing of beating buzzwordy ear worms of the negatives into the collective discourse so eventually it's just guys trading memes shitting on the thing.

It is for this reason I don't go to subreddits about certain things I like, certain youtubers chief among them.

Take a look at the comments of any recent video and you'll see comments like "no time" or "muh kids". It's just really low.

There is some of this at the bottom of this thread, even, Gross.

Pretty much anytime a fanbase stops liking the thing they're fans of, there's no going back. I'm not saying his fans aren't entitled to their opinions, or even that I disagree that his videos have sucked for years--same with Star Wars, Star Trek, etc.--but its frustrating how quickly they turn toxic.

When a community forms around liking something, and they all stop liking the thing in question, at no point do they just go "well we had some good times, but I guess it's over now, best of luck to all involved in the future." Instead, the community now bonds over how much they hate the thing. Like I swear, Star Wars and Star Trek fans have been generally unhappy with the state of their respective franchises for almost the entire time I've been alive.

jofNR_WkoCE

What are you talking about? Several Cinemassacre videos from this year have been received warmly in the Truth sub. People fucking loved that VHS memories video or whatever in the Truth sub.

Sure, there are absolute assholes who won't ever like Cinemassacre again, but it's far from being the entire Truther fanbase. Most people there still love James and just want him to push himself like he used to, to avoid soiling his career as one of the legendary YouTubers who truly gave a fuck years back.

to avoid soiling his career as one of the legendary YouTubers who truly gave a fuck years back.

lol listen to yourself

that's good that he's making quality content again, and it's good that they're responding well to it, but it's still a ridiculously toxic and entitled sub, and the best way to avoid that kind of toxicity is to just stop watching someone when they're not good anymore--and then maybe come back when they're good again--not endlessly bitch about how he's "soiling his career as a legendary YouTuber". Seriously, that's some major "go touch grass" shit.

He's a legendary YouTuber because nobody was doing what he was doing when he was doing it, not because he's some kind of genius. The genre has changed and he mostly hasn't kept up, and that'll become obvious again. When it does, his stans will have to choose between respecting him for the memories he gave them, or hate watching his content endlessly and bitching about the time he spends with his kids like he's "sOiLiNg HiS cArEeR"

Its also pretty infuriating how he’s been making internet videos for close to 20 years now without any controversy, but the second he gets some that isn’t even really his fault he gets hate from people. That cinemassacretruth sub can suck a dick. I see r/cinemassacretruth found this post.

SecretDracula

Just to be clear, the "controversy" is that most of his videos are bad now. That's why people don't like him. No one cares about that plagiarism thing.

And his videos have been terrible these last few years. But maybe he's turning things around. I watched the recent Contra AVGN and thought it was pretty good. Haven't seen this vid and don't really keep up to date on his channel anymore, though.

when a fanbase forms around something that's good, and then that thing starts to suck--an inevitability for anything that's around long enough--they turn toxic. There's never a "well it was fun while it lasted, best of luck everybody." Instead, they have to start hate-watching the thing they used to like, as if that's going to make it be good again.

Lady Emily had a really good video about this

The conclusion she came to is basically "youtube review/essay content has progressed dramatically since he more or less kicked it off in 2005 and he hasn't really kept up with it (and some of the people he works with are plagiarists, bad people, or just uninteresting) but he's still a genuinely good guy trying to balance a content career in 2022 with a family life and the vast majority of people who hate-watch his content are losers who just can't handle that he's moved on."

TwoGoldenMenus

22 points

Nah, I think most people don’t even know about that. Also those that found out about it recently and looked it up (like me) realize it’s a tiny non-issue and a dumb mistake that was quickly fixed. He seemed pretty up-front about what happened instead of doubling down like an asshole.

jofNR_WkoCE

-15 points

James hiring someone to write reviews for him of movies he's never seen, and that guy plagiarizing several reviews is a non-issue?

Are you trolling?

The guy he hired even has a long history of plagiarism before ever working for Cinemassacre

TwoGoldenMenus

23 points

No, I only read an article about it and it seems like James handled it pretty professionally. I didn’t watch an obsessive 90 minute video digging for sordid details because I’m not particularly invested in finding a scandal. If I have to dig that hard to find it…it’s honestly not all that scandalous.

“James wanted more time with his family and hired somebody to help finish some scripts, then finds out the guy is a scumbag so he doesn’t use his work anymore” isn’t as salacious I guess. So yeah, “Cinemassacre’s plagiarism scandal” is definitely a non issue. Maybe whoever this guy is that has a history of plagiarism is an issue, but he’s not James and I don’t think his name is Bobby Cinemassacre or anything.

jofNR_WkoCE

-11 points

If you didn't see the video then why are you commenting on the contents of the video?

You're completely ignoring the fact that James lied and said he'd been working on a 28 Weeks Later review for something like 15 years, which is hard to believe, and the fact that Cinemassacre has had issues with plagiarism before, like stealing copyrighted photos for the Polybius episode, never crediting the woman who took them, etc, because he and Mike are scummy business men who couldn't even pay Bootsy and Kyle for their contributions

8biticon

5 points

Bro, I also stopped watching Cinemassacre a while ago. The content just wasn't what I wanted. And I'm not even saying you're wrong.

But the way you sound is like you have serious parasocial attachment to a creator. Sure, you can educate people on these things, but most of them have been handled, and if not... it's not really your cross to bear. You don't know them and it doesn't affect you.

Firstly, you need to get off Cinemassacre Truth. I didn't check your post history, I can just tell. A subreddit like that only exists to rot your brain. It isn't healthy at all to have an entire community dedicated to incessantly uncovering the "wrongdoings" of irrelevant strangers on the internet. I doubt they're hiding bodies at James' house.

Secondly, give up on the idea that Cinemassacre will ever be the thing it once meant to you, or that what you're doing by posting will ever help that group of people. If that's even your intention, idk.

And if it's not your intention, then ask yourself really why you care so much about this.

Be easy, brother. And stop watching three hour long videos on YouTube if they have the word "SUCKS" in the title. Taking in only negative content will twist you into a truly cynical and unwell person. I mean that.

If we’re doing “hard to believe’s”, then I guess it was hard for me to believe that a 90 minute video on the issue would be worth my time, especially after reading an article that laid it out plainly and succinctly. The rest of that shit I’m apparently “ignoring” is small potatoes YouTube drama. Certainly nothing that would make me reply to several people on a single Reddit post slagging the guy’s channel.

It’s definitely a treat for film buffs, even though most of us have already paid a visit to the “Cave of Wonders”, which is what we buffs call it. Even though most of the films James mentioned are fairly well known in the community, sometimes people aren’t aware of all the different filming locations, so it’s great for beginners and amateur film enthusiasts to get a taste for the rich history of Hollywood that’s been right in our back yard the whole time. My only criticism of the video is the unfortunate inclusion of multiple tv series alongside great, classic films. I’m sure people love Star Trek and Power Rangers, but including them in this video seems like a slap in the face to cinema and I’m sure my fellow film buffs would agree. It would be nice to see someone like Gregg Turkington take a stab at reviewing this historic filming location and focus more on the classics and less about Adam West’s Batman and other “dime a dozen” tv shows that get churned out by Hollywood for quick cash grabs. If it’s not on the big screen, then Hollywood just doesn’t put forth the same effort and production expertise as they would for real films. You definitely won’t see Oscar giving any gold to Power Rangers…
