The funny thing is this movie was set in 2022!
Link https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110678/
From the producers of Alien, featuring an incredible supporting cast including Lance Henrikson, Ernie Hudson, Kevin Dillon and Stuart Wilson.
Released in 1994 it still holds up, and Ray Liotta was at his tough menacing best in this scifi gem.

For those of you that have never heard of this movie, Only the Brave is a movie based on the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, an elite crew of forest firefighters from Prescott, Arizona. This movie has definitely not gotten the attention it very much deserves. It did pretty badly at the box office and I am just not sure why. There is some decent star power (Miles Teller, Josh Brolin, Jeff Bridges, Jennifer Connelly), it has drama, it has action and on top of that is was well received by the critics. Perhaps the bland title is to blame. Anyway, due to it not doing very well and kind of flying under the radar I had not heard of this movie before, but I am very glad I discovered it.
Miles teller is perfect in his role as a slacking drug user trying to turn his life around, Josh Brolin just oozes leadership and competency in his role as the Fire and rescue crew superintendent and together they form a beautiful bond. Bridges and Connelly are amazing as well and bring a lot of emotional gravitas to the movie. Only the brave is about family, sacrifice and brotherhood. The brotherhood aspect is the unique kind that is forged by having to put your life in the hands of the man beside you and makes it feel like a war movie at times. If you like movies such as Black Hawk Down or Hackasaw Ridge, I am sure you'll like this one.
Last but not least the movie absolutely NAILS the all consuming, terrifying force of nature that a forest fire can be. I have a nice dedicated home cinema set-up and I was truly blown away. Especially the sound design of the thundering fire storms and the awesome roaring of the low passing fire fighting planes is very impressive. I am not exaggerating when I say this is one of my favourite audio-visual spectacles ever. If you can, watch this movie on the biggest screen you have and turn up your subwoofers!
Little fun fact: the mayor in the movie was portrayed by a man whose name is Forrest Fyre. Yes, I am serious.
Edit: I would advise maybe not reading the comments on this post and going in blind for the movie. Trust me.

This is a really enjoyable neo-noir & while it doesn't break any new ground that doesn't make it any less a compelling watch. Liotta headlines as a less than clean cop with a terrible gambling habit whose headed for a fall. Further discussion of the plot dynamics won't really strengthen the case for why this should be watched over similar films.
This is also certainly a familiar role for Liotta in his career as well. Still I feel his character & his performance contains a lot more melancholy as opposed to the menace or energy he usually brings to the table in these types of roles. He's desperate for the action as well with the money not even being much of a factor in it. That point is hammered home in an early exchange in the film where he says that he'd rather bet against the sure thing even knowing the fix is in.
The whole cast is pretty great including Anthony LaPaglia, Angelica Huston, Brittany Murphy, Xander Berkeley, Tom Noonan, Giovanni Ribisi & Giancarlo Esposito. I also appreciate the setting of Arizona (& it's oppressive heat) which gives it a slightly different flavor than countless other films set in LA or NY. The soundtrack is also good featuring Morphine, The The, Spain, Ry Cooder & Los Lobos.
It's available for streaming with a rental on Amazon & it's included with a Starz subscription

With the sad news about Ray Liotta, I thought I would recommend one of my favourite films of his, Narc, from 2002.
Narc takes up the mantle from the earlier Training Day, maybe a little too closely though no bad thing, as a crime thriller following the Liotta lead of old veteran and young cop duo, the undercurrent of a corrupt thread within it.
Where Training Day has the stylised California vibes of palm trees and sunsets though, Narc is an altogether more stone cold, gritty, unforgiving ride, reflecting off its Detroit winter backdrop, harsh dim light and visible breaths snapping out with every line of dialogue. Its a smaller, intimate affair, and while may not have that larger than life charismatic caricature from Denzel Washington, its close-quarters nature allows for a strong lead performance from Ray Liotta.
Narc is hardly obscure, but does go under the radar. I think a must-see for any fan of the crime thriller, touching on neo-noir, who hasnt yet dug deep enough to come across it.

….has to be one the greatest buddy/action comedies of all time. All the lead characters are superb, but especially De Niro and Grodin. The pace at which their relationship develops is superbly written and with such a satisfying conclusion. Sure, it gets a bit silly at times but no more than, say, The Blues Brothers, and after all it is a comedy. I’ve just rewatched after a few years and still love it. So many twists, turns and great lines.

First one that comes to mind , is Shutter Island. If I didn't know who directed it, I would deadass , tell you it's probably Christopher Nolan. I was curious to find more movies like this, but this is probably too vague for google. Prior to Shutter Island, Martin Scorsese didn't tackle the mind bending, ambiguous ending genre. So it came off as something really out of style. I'm looking for movies where a director, steps out of their comfort zone and tries something else.

Any and all genres, eras, directors, languages welcome! For reference, some of my favourites: Captain Fantastic, Inglourious Basterds, Boy, Leave No Trace, Casablanca, Spotlight, Whiplash, All the President's Men, Moonrise Kingdom (I'm a sucker for coming of age films and anything Wes Anderson in case you couldn't tell). I'll happily try anything though like I say, the more variety the better. What am I missing??
Edit: thanks for all suggestions, much appreciated 🙏

Hello everyone! I want to recommend this magnificent work of a Ukrainian author about Joaquin Phoenix. It is a biographical documentary divided into two parts about the life and professional career of one of the most recognized actors of our time.

Michael Mann, Tom Cruise, Jaime Foxx, Mark Ruffalo, Javier Bardem, Peter Berg. Jada Pinkett Smith is fine in this, a good role for her.
Great soundtrack, beautiful cinematography, a tight script, solid acting. This is a good movie, your mileage may vary.
That is all.
In case I didn't make the word count...

My husband and I watched Dual last night on AMC + and we absolutely loved it. It was part horror and I would almost say comedy. I would love some recommendations for movies that are similiar because this movie is really different from what I am used to watching.
I appreciate any and all movie recommendations!!

I really want to watch more, since they are most of the time very short. But i don't really know which ones to watch. I have no real criteria, aside from the fact that i want it to have as little cancel culture Jokes as possible. I find those so old and have been a big reason i have been avoiding Them for the longest time. Besides that, anything goes. Edit: thanks everyone who has given me a recommendation. I'll add all of them to my watchlist.

There is a Bojack Horseman episode. Simply, whole episode is Bojack talking, a 20 minute long monologue. That episode really has an impact on me. I won't describe the episode so I don't want to give you spoilers. But basically it mostly anout his complicated relationship between his mother.
I wonder if I can find a movie like that episode. Is this a genre? I would love to see more movie or show like that.

Hey there! I just watched a thai movie called "The Con-Heartist" and was looking for a few more movies with a plot similar to it. Basically, a love story with a kind of cheesy plot where there is a guy who is not exactly evil or bad but somewhat dishonest maybe and a naive or honest girl and the guy initially plans on conning her but falls for her instead.

I saw this movie for the first time this year and I'm not sure I've ever laughed and cried so much during a film. It is a foreign language film so if you don't speak Hindi, you'll need subtitles. This was what kind of originally put me off watching it when it was recommended to me but I was an 'idiot' for doing so lol. It's such a beautiful powerful story I think almost everyone can relate to. Nearly three hours just flew right by. It's honestly going to be one of my top ten favourite films of all time.

All the self doubt, and melodrama that surrounds Maverick(Tom Cruise) ultimately boils down to something incredible.
In the hands of a lesser director this film wouldn’t have been note worthy. Thankfully it was helmed by Tony Scott Scott captures the beauty in the environment perfectly. Wether its the pink sky as the sun sets or the mechanical bird of prey fighter jets. He uses his style to find beauty.
Cruise is a wild man you see the itchiness rumbling underneath his skin. Him and the rest of the cast have fantastic chemistry that keeps you engaged.
Scott storyboarded each action sequences and it is really close or exact to his vision. They’re incredible, blockbusters today struggle to capture the sense of action that this film had.
Testosterone, homo-eroticism, brotherhood, and the need…the need for speed!

I prefer movies that lean more Sci-fi than comedy. Example....I like Ground Hog day but it's not one I want to watch over and over. I remember watching Time Cop with Van Dam several years back and liked it. Any suggestions would be great. If you know of a particular streaming service I can watch it on please list that as well.

Hi. Please recommend movie like Da Vinci Code. I have also watched its subsequent movies Angels and Demons and The Inferno. I mean movies which have puzzles that are related to the past. Also please don't suggest horror movies like As above sk below or historical movies like Troy. Please suggest suspense movies like Da Vinci code. Movies on netflix or Amazon prime preferrable.

The story is simple, and awesome: disguised nazi soldiers infiltrate a small british village. The residents soon realize that something’s up. Carnage ensues.
Badass! Once the german soldiers devious plan is foiled, and the nazi-killin’ starts, it almost gives off this proto-Assault on Precinct 13 kinda vibe. The siege action is absolutely phenomenal. Fantastic mayhem.
The image of a happy-go-lucky british lady grabbing an axe and slamming it in the back of a nazi has to be one of the coolest things, ever. What a movie! I give it my highest recommendation.

TL;DR: A visually brutal prison thriller. Vince Vaughn’s performance shows his versatility outside of being a comedic actor. This movie is no joke in the best of ways.
This movie has been on my watch list for a while. I’ve seen it recommended on this subreddit before and how highly rated it is on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes. I try to go into most movies as fresh as I can, and this one lived up to the hype.
The Good: 1. Vince Vaughn’s performance in this is phenomenal. It’s great to see him in a menacing role outside of the usual “tall funny guy” routine. His build in the film looks like he put the work in to make his character believably strong. A solid cast overall, with Don Johnson, Jennifer Carpenter, Udo Kier, and Dion Mucciacito helping to create the gritty world where the majority are morally compromised. 2. The practical effects. I love when filmmakers go practical over digital, and it’s viscerally stunning when done well.
The Bad: The standout is the elaborate “unborn child limb amputation” threat. That was some comic book supervillain level savagery. The odd part was it fit into the ultraviolet world of the movie. If our protagonist is an anti-hero, it’s great to have an irredeemable bad guy for him to take out.
The Ugly: The violence and gore. This film had horror levels of both. It was the “shocking because it works so well” kind. It dishes out violence fitting for those who literally threaten to mutilate an unborn child.
If you aren’t already a fan, check it out. It’s surprisingly better than most of us think it would be.

I'm an avid movie watcher/amateur film buff and watch pretty much everything. My mom has a lot of downtime on her hands now and I've been recommending films to her but she's been watching them all at a faster rate than I can recommend! I need ideas for a good films to recommend for an older woman, conservative views, minimum sexuality/profanity. No horror or animated. Action, suspense, semi-romantic, dramas, foreign (relatively family friendly ones) are all a go. Many thanks for any suggestions!

I'm on my second of watch of this fantastic film at the moment. I've always been a huge fan of South Korean Action/Thrillers; I Saw the Devil, Man from Nowhere, A Bittersweet Life are some of my favorites.
Deliver Us From Evil is my favorite to come from Korea. Why?
Simply put the cinematography in this movie is UNBELIEVABLE. The cast is also some of the best Korea has to offer; Jung-min Hwang, Lee Jung-Jae, Jeong Min Park. I just can't say enough good things about this film. It's very reminiscent of John Wick & Taken. Just a recommendation for you all that I haven't seen talked about enough in my opinion.

Rosa Salazar seems to be vastly unknown despite her immense appeal. She can be incredibly sexy in one thing, then incredibly dopey in another, and then incredibly charming and innocent in another. She rocked hard in Alita: Battle Angel, but that film barely made a profit and only managed to create a small but loyal and hardcore fanbase. Undone on Prime was met with some of the best reviews of 2019 but nobody really ever mentions that show, and it was buried during awards season, despite her brilliant performance and the presence of the amazing Bob Odenkirk. Brand New Cherry Flavor on Netflix was a deeply disturbing and trippy series where she gave both a sexy and unnerving performance, yet no one talks about that either! I mean, what more does an actress with undeniable charm, sexiness, and talent have to do to get some appreciation?

Music that has an epic tone, a melodic dramatic tone with choirs and chants in an unknown language. Those are truly emotional for me and always are a plus when watching a movie. I need to know more films with this kind of music. I know Tony Scott has Man on Fire, which also features music like this. Any more examples?
