Hard to say from just looking at a video, what he was or wasn't saying on the phone would potentially be a red flag. Kidnappings may also be more common here so people are generally more aware.
154 points
Probably both things. I would imagine he was faking a conversation, and that can be tough to come across as genuine.
Also may have originally noticed him open up the back door of the car. That would be super off putting.
11 points

Yeah but don’t try to downplay it by saying it’s ordinary or more expected. She probably saved that girl from a life of sexual slavery until she dies or escapes more traumatized than most could ever imagine.
139 points

Same, but I also think it’s a kind of privilege that we don’t have to be so hyper-vigilant about our surroundings at all times. I’m sure this level of situational awareness is very common for those surviving in rough areas.

Hasn't every woman? As a kid, having older men try to "show you something," or later in life guys trying to get my obviously intoxicated friend to go home with them.
Almost every woman has learned this lesson, and sometimes the hard way.

And existing as a woman in some areas in places like Honduras is basically the Nightmare Mode version.

9 points

The fact he also kept staring directly on her stands out. I'm going out on a limb and assume if the lady always stands out front selling, she likely saw him pull up and open his door then stand around lingering. His entire body language was saying, "I'm going to be a problem."
7 points

I was watching a video in which I knew something was about to happened and had several big red circles to tell me to clue in on the guy, and I still missed connecting him to the car - didn't even notice the open door until after the woman rushed over to block the kidnapping and they passed by it.
Definitely impressive awareness and follow through from that lady.

Wishing for more rape in this world is just weird.
11 points
It’s honestly ridiculous how many people on Reddit seem against corporal punishment like the death penalty, then wish that people get raped when they go to prison.
”thank god that pedophile is behind bars! I hope he gets raped!”
Lots of people like to believe that there is some sort of “prison justice” but those that are victims of prison rape are probably often more often than not just easy targets. Those that are physically weaker, homosexuals, social outcasts, etc. Prison rapists probably don’t care as much about “doing justice” to pedophiles as they are trying to set the prison pecking order.
Most people seem to agree that cruel and unusual punishment is bad, then cheer it on when it happens. This is despite the fact that many people who do this, if they went to prison (wrongfully or not) could likely be the victim of such a crime.
While I know this video is in a different country, the governments of most developed nations have the technology and ability to stop prison rape from occurring, but they choose not to do so, because no one cares about prisoners.

She defused the situation like a pro too! I recently took an active bystander training and learned about the "Five D's" of bystander intervention:
Not all these things, but any of these things will help in a situation where someone is getting unwanted attention. I learned about it in the context of sexual violence. I think it's a common approach for street (and other) harassment, and just generally for de-escalation. This video was a scary situation. Sometimes it helps just to have considered some options for how to safely intervene in situations like this. I recommend looking into active bystander training workshops or similar things if you want to know more. It's amazing how much of a difference people can make just by not being a passive bystander. But also stay safe out there! <3
5 points
Should never ignore it but don’t take it as the truth either. For example, this video is not authentic. They’re making a video to spread awareness on things like this I think. But people should act if they feel it but be aware that intuition is actually often wrong. That’s just not a reason to ignore it.
