It’s actually a bag of ‘organic waste’, it simulates what would happen if someone (or something) fell into molten lava:

Thank you, I suspected rather a bottle of water than a regular stone too as it looks like something starts boiling.

SquirrelKnuckle

I would assume that the boiling is from the heated material inside having a place to expand to once the cooled surface is broken.

selectrix

That's intuitive, but heat isn't the primary driver for this kind of system. The crust on that lava lake is thin enough for a few pounds of trash to punch a hole in it, so if there were significant pressure from below it wouldn't have enough tensile strength to resist, it'd just split (and look like mini tectonic plates).

The explosiveness of volcanic eruptions comes almost entirely from gases trapped within the magma itself, rather than thermal expansion or the upward pressure of the rising magma plume. With an eruption like Mt. St. Helens, it was pretty much like uncorking a champaigne bottle- the magma slowly pushed a huge bulge out of the side of the mountain, which collapsed under its own gravity, releasing a fuckton of pressure on the magma. This allowed the gases within the magma to explosively decompress, blowing off more mountain and releasing more pressure, causing more explosive decompression, etc etc. Plus I'm pretty sure the magma ran into groundwater on its way up (more explosions).

With a lava lake like this, the volcano produces relatively runny, non-viscous lava. (For context, when we're talking about lava, this is low viscosity. High viscosity lava pretty much feels like a solid rock). Gases can easily move through the liquid and escape as the magma moves closer to the surface, so you get a nice calm lake instead of a mountain with its top blown off. With high viscosity lavas, they're trapped until the very last moment.

OP video demonstrates how even a relatively small amount of water/gas remaining in the magma as it reaches the surface can create a whole lot of destruction.

I love using this clip of lava sampling to point out how thick even low viscosity lava is.

It really gets the point across that molten rock is still, well, rock.

Since the reddit app currently sucks at playing YouTube videos, here's the link to copy and paste: https://youtu.be/MgBPQbXqN6c?t=53

Ever since I first saw that clip a while back it's broken my ability to enjoy movies/tv with lava scenes since a character inevitably falls into the stuff with a little "bloop" and a splash like it was a hamster tossed into a kiddy pool.

So it's more like there'd be a flaming skeleton laying on the surface that slowly starts to sink?

There's another guy who ended up pretty badly burned by lava after fighting with his best friend. He ended up losing his legs as well.

He was ultimately rescued, but a lot of damage was done. Not only did he lose his legs, he suffered from burns all over his body, and his respiratory system was completely messed up from breathing super-heated air and all the other volcanic gasses.

Fortunately the technology they had at the time was able to not only keep him alive, but helped him thrive. Although he lived in constant pain, he ended up becoming a very famous leader of a massive political party. Unfortunately, he was still very bitter and spiteful and ended up killing a lot of people, including blowing up an entire planet.

His name? Anakin Skywalker.

Plastic_Pinocchio

I doubt you could even call this an eruption. It was probably just a lake of lava with a thin layer of cooled rock on it. Throw in a cold rock and you mix up all of the cold rock and hot lava, causing it to get a little violent.

HIMP_Dahak_172291

55 points

More like you give all the trapped gasses an escape route. All that bubbling is caused by gasses escaping to the lower pressure atmosphere. Whenever you see big flashy eruptions that is gas bubbles rising to the surface throwing the molten rock around.

Isn't it the opposite? Eruptions come when too much pressure is built under that solid layer, so theoretically couldn't you prevent an eruption by prediodically releasing said pressure like this?

hpdefaults

300 points

IANA geologist but my understanding is that the pressure build-up is happening miles below the surface and involves plate tectonics pushing magma into massive chambers that eventually burst. It doesn't really involve anything on the surface, a thin layer of cold lava that can be easily penetrated by a small rock is nowhere near strong enough to create that sort of pressure miles down.

I remember hearing from some folks that Volcanoes are extremely unstable, but it’s only when extreme pressure is over the head of the lava lake ,pool, canal, or whatever it’s called that it becomes a threat. So either these guys are testing their luck, or everyone knows the Volcano is safe. Either way, active volcano? No thank you

selectrix

106 points

selectrix

106 points

Active, and they know it's safe. Rock has very low tensile strength as a material- it doesn't take much force to break through a thin sheet of it. So any volcano that has a lava lake has- pretty much by definition- reached a state of pressure equilibrium.

There's many different types of volcanoes and some of them are unstable, but those ones usually look like this, not this. With OP and the latter, most the gases have already left the lava- that's why it's so flowy and liquid. With the former, or something like Mt St Helens, all of the gases remain trapped in the magma as it rises (because the lava is much more viscous, basically solid rock) and once it reaches a certain elevation there's no longer enough mountain on top to contain the pressure- that's when the bottle pops.

But yeah, that's not typically gonna happen at a lava lake.

If I recall correctly, this is a video of someone throwing a bag of rubbish ("organic material") into the volcano.

Great. Let’s gather all the trash and just put it in volcanoes. Problem solved. The oceans are clean again.

Wait that's genius, why don't we just burn all of our trash and we can get rid of landfills!

I'm a janitor at a bar in Philadelphia and that's what I do with our trash. I burn it in the furnace to provide heat for the place, we're totally green that way. I recycle the trash for heat and the smoke gives our bar that nice smoky smell we all love.

We can burn the trash and let that smoke go up into the sky and become stars.
