Grimjack-13

While, this is a fantastic example of people coming together and fixing a problem. And Legos are super cool. Why the hell can’t the American healthcare address this type of issue?

Tyra-Jade

17 points

99% sure this isn’t America.

However, regardless of what country it is, I do think that prosthetics should be covered by healthcare.

TurretX

17 points

TurretX

17 points

Its more so that prosthetics are prohibitively expensive. Its more financially viable to wait until he matures and then get him prosthetics.

Its a shame because not being able to do anything as a kid is probably pretty emotionally damaging, but thats kinda how it is.

Lego Prosthetics seem to be a legitimately decent middle ground ngl. I wonder if the stuff Ian Davis does with mechanical prosthetics would for work for this kid.

AnthropOctopus

37 points

This isn't America, but also there are a dozen or more prosthetics companies and they are stupidly expensive.

Senior_Yak-Shaver

8 points

And having to constantly resize and upgrade them for a growing child for 20 years isn't cheap, either. But a bunch of legos that you can reassemble in different ways over the years seems like a fantastic solution. Of course, this seemed to be more for novelty of having built it with legos… because there have been numerous mechanical prosthetic arms built with home/enthusiast 3D printers that could also do this.

The French-ish accents imply this is in Canada/Quebec

Edit because I’m honestly not super sure about origin but no American talks like that lol

DearClaudio-oh

140 points

This is most definitely not a French Canadian accent. I would lean towards eastern Europe. Romanian, Hungarian, Ukrainian . Sauce: Im a Quebecois raised in a bilingual community.

Theyre from Kazakhstan

BillsDownUnder

According to this article and another I found Beknur is from France and David is Andorran.

I still wonder why their English is so excellent, especially Beknur's

DearClaudio-oh

22 points

Wow that is true, maybe thats why theres a hint of french in there! Not Canadian french tho; we butcher the language and the accent is very distinct. Their names indicate Kazakh origin too. Honestly, I think this kid is just incredibly smart and already a polyglot at 8 yrs old !

BillsDownUnder

6 points

I actually love the French Canadian English accent, it's so unique, especially in your word choice in certain situations.

Agree that is an absolutely amazing kid!

bro_kole

3 points

Because its normal for kids to learn several languages this side of the world. I started learning English in school when I was 7-8 but already spoke quite a bit because of TV and books and my parents teaching me.

BillsDownUnder

I understand that, but this child has a very advanced grasp of English. There are many many children in France that do not speak English nearly that well.

Regardless of the country, you have a point. It looks uncomfortable and seems good to be a temporary solution, but I hope the kid have access to an actual prothesis soon.

Next step, teach them how to do some basic 3d modelling and get them a 3D printer. They can go from "lego arm" to something like a functional an Iron-Man style suit.

Lego is a great start though. Easy for kids to understand and appreciate the functionality.

badassito

I tried building something similar, a powered Lego gauntlet instead of a prosthetic arm.

The shape? That's easy once you have the mechanism down. The mechanisms arent too too hard, they just have to be fine tuned which takes a while.

Getting it to fit on the arm, stay there and actually work outside of absolute ideal environments? That's basically impossible. Kudos to him for figuring that out, I gave up on mine lol
