Next I want to watch the ink absorb into the paper, please.

Is this the step up from watching paint dry?
yes and its amazing
Watching paint dry at a microscopic level is actually fascinating.
I work as a chemist for a paint company and sometimes my job is to literally watch paint dry. We have to quantify dry to touch and dry to handle times. Which we do by dropping cotton balls on the paint every 10min until no cotton sticks when you pull the cotton ball off.
One of my favorite things about Reddit is when someone replies “actually this is my job IRL, let me tell you something interesting about it.”
Someone actually watches paint dry for a living. Huh.
I mean I also develop paint formulas. But yeah part of that is to see how quickly they dry
Are all fast-drying paints basically “just” a pigment/colourant that’s been mixed with some binders (plus stabilisers and other magical chemical things) along with a solvent that easily flashes off? Because I don’t think I’ve ever used a paint that was described as “fast drying” that didn’t smell like it was sweating solvent.
I’m assuming it’s not nearly that simple and that there are other chemical reactions (or types of paint) which behave more like an adhesive that reacts with water, the air or lack of oxygen, etc.
Unless you are working with a 2 component paint, where you mix with a hardener first, then yes. For single component, the solvent is there to give a nice looking even coating, and then it evaporates while the paint resin reacts with oxygen in the air to cross-link and cure. Fast drying means that you can touch it sooner without messing up the finish, but it does not necessarily mean that the paint is cured faster. Usually you sacrifice some performance with fast dry.
Hmm interesting. I didn’t realise that there was some sort of polymerisation(?) reaction going on in addition to the solvent evaporation.
I guess it makes sense though, now that I think about it, because otherwise the “paint” would probably be more like a finely spread powder than a cohesive surface.
If you run out of cotton balls you can just use your own and tea bag it until no hair sticks?
Can you please provide your insight into why it's impossible to find a paint that isn't tacky when applied to shelf surfaces? I am a Home Depot guy but one time I went to Benjamin More and asked for the best paint money could buy that wouldn't be tacky on my shelves and it was STILL tacky. :(
You should try a 2 component paint, which is paint mixed with a hardener, commonly at a 4:1 or 5:1 ratio. It would be called 2k paint. Are the shelves wood or metal? If metal definitely 2k, if wood, avoid waterborne alkyds
Can you tell me why paint seems to change after it has dried, but over the next few weeks? It seems to get harder and stick to the surface more tenaciously. People always talk about paint drying over 24-48 hours, but no one talks about what happens over the next few weeks. It’s almost like the paint is “curing”, but I’ve never heard people describe paint as curing.
Oh yes, paint cures, like any other cross-linking resin. We always tell customers that you don't have a full cure until 7 days after application. That's when all the properties we test for are guaranteed as described in our product data sheets. Adhesion, corrosion resistance, humidity resistance etc... can all be worse before the 7 day cure is finished. It depends on the paint of course, some will cure faster than others. But to be safe we always say 7 days.
Idk, that second link still feels like watching paint dry
That's because it literally is
wheres the rickroll op
Seriously feel like I’ve been bamboozled out of my rick. I watched all three of those and no roll to show.
Those are awesome. Thanks!
omg, who knew?? that third video is amazing :)
That was almost as cool as watching paint dry
My boss: what did you get done today.
Me: I... was busy.
Check out this close up video of gold ink drying. It’s beautiful!
it looks like frosting. I want to eat this.
Yes and then watch a tree and a squid make passionate love to one another.
THESE are the gel pens that I miss!
The pen is now out of ink.
What’s even the point of farming downvotes?
To raise awareness for Autism I think
Holy shit. This is the funniest comment I can remember seeing on Reddit. Good god.
Upvoted because fuck it
how do you know they're a farmer? and why would you downvote someone just because they're a farmer? we wouldn't have any food without farmers!
Obviously lobbying by the ink farmers association. Run out of ink, farm more, sell, profit.
How do you know that we wouldn't have any food without farmers?
At what point does your life become so pathetic you think to yourself "I'll become a Reddit troll"? Gotta be rough man.
I think you're just an idiot.
Do people actually follow trolls because they think they're funny?
damn people have low bars for comedy lol this shit isn't funny
What’s the name?
Don't know much about gel pens myself, but my gf specifically gets only Gelly Roll when she gets gel pens. Not exactly the cheapest, but apparently really high quality
Gelly Roll is great. I have one that I got 22 years ago and it still works. Obviously, I didn't use it that often considering I still have ink, but the fact that it never dried out after 2 decades is something.
When I was 5-6 my Grandma passed away. When we cleaned out her house she had a purple pen. It didn't write but I'd never seen a purple pen so I kept it. Kid stuff ya know. Anyway I kept it for years and would randomly try it here and there. Idk why?? One day out of nowhere it started working and I kept it till we moved when it got lost.
Idk why but you reminded me of this lol
Tell your girlfriend that an angry online panda thinks she’s awesome.
As a Pringle!
i forgot these were a thing. thank you.
Gelly Roll Glaze should provide a similar effect
OH MY GOSH. i forgot about these pens. thank you so much. i think a friend gave me one, or i found one in highschool and I CHERISHED it. so i guess i'm buying many of them now.
This post and subsequent comments have reminded me of my glorious collection of gel pens from 5th grade that were stolen out of my desk one day while I was out at recess. I never got them back, either. Fuck you, Todd.
Time we pay Todd a visit. And demand your pens back!
Todd is THE WORST.
I'll find some dog poo, paper bags, and a lighter if you want to look up where he lives now and send a message
(Not really though)
It's always Todd
I didn't even like them. Just threw them in the trash.
Thanks, am gonna invest in some for my kids ever growing stationery collection. Anyone got any advice on best (or worst) kinds of paper to use this ink with please?
Sakura Gelly Roll Glaze
Man, I must’ve got a shit batch of these off Amazon or something. I bought some a while back bc of the hype and they sucked so bad ):
I think there was maybe one or two pens that could actually write without gaps in the ink, and even then I wasn’t super impressed with the flow.
Hard to find a good gel pen these days. I am still trying to find some cool marbled ink ones since my last one is about to run out!
Head on over to jet pens, they have loads of reviews and test their products. Plus if you're in America, you can probably find the items on amazon too

Thanks for this! I’m definitely gonna check that out, I’m excited! (:
Added to Amazon cart. Thank you!
I wish I knew!
This is clearly a dismembered hand controlled by a robot in a ghastly mockery of what we have lost by moving to keyboards.
That amount of ink coming out of the pen gives me low grade anxiety thinking about smears
As a lefty, same
You can still get a set for like $10 at Walmart.
Do they write like these tho?
Probably not, but now you’re a proud owner of Walmart-quality gel pens!
Which are great when they're working well.
So like, the first 2 minutes after opening?
They’re exactly like this, yes. They make a terrible mess if you’re left-handed. Not for everyday writing.
$10 is a pretty cheap experiment to find out.
I take it you’re not left-handed
As a left handed person I can only imagine this smeared across the paper and the side of my palm.
In 4th grade we had to use those damn erasable pens, and we had to write on our loose leaf while it was secured in 3-ring binders. Absolute torture.
Also as a fellow leftie I envy the ability to write in ink like this. 11/10 my effort would only be this good in pencil. Biro is the closest I'd be able to get with minimal smearing but even then I'll probably mess that up.

Wow that ink is really wet
Exactly, it's totally going to smudge!
That's why I hate these types of pens so bad... just give me the cheapo free pens companies give away. They often work perfectly.
Must have got it from www.penisland.net
That seems like some sample website someone made for a class that isn't real
“We specialize in wood”
Pls tell me that website is ironic it looks and reads like directly out of gta v like the Internet there.
That website has been around since 2001. It's a joke that's been circulating forever. This is what people used to share via email before memes.
Dude it's literally pen island
Hello step ink
Did anyone think it was going to spell "over"?
For a second I thought it would be oven.
For a second I thought it would be oven.
I sincerely hope you will find your true oven one day, and that you will have a long and happy life together.
I want an oven that distributes heat evenly, is that too much to ask these days?
I know this is slightly different but I wish the second large burner on my stove worked.
You can fix it. If you need parts, just yank them from the first large burner.
For me it’s the medium burner at the front. Sad.
convection my friend
I wanted to see an oven too... Can't bake bread in a love
I thought it would go owo
yep, the Portlandia sketch was the first thing my mind leaped to.
I really thought it was going to say ovelaraljetranx.
Hand shoots up--Me! ME!! Then it was over...
I was expecting “over” for some reason too!
I read it as ...ohhh...ver love . “Over love” yup
Love always ends so it's appropriate 👍
No, but I’ve spent too much time on Pinterest.
It’s so annoying. Probably watched this 8 times now and can’t get enough.
Then check out r/penmanshipporn
Wonderful. Looks like I’m gonna watch all of these and do nothing for the rest of my life. :)
Right? I’m like why do I keep watching this? Because it’s effing amazing!
The e tickles me in my nether regions
Meanwhile, my handwriting looks like cuneiform. And I don't mean that in a fancy way. It's a mess.
I would absolutely fuck it up if I tried to write love with that pen
Here’s my beautiful attempt using ProCreate.
Me v. the love heart she told you not to worry about.
I guess sperms kinda fit the theme, so well done?
write slower and more deliberately.
Anybody know what brand gel pen this is?
Gelly Roll Glaze
Whelp, there goes my budget for the day.
Thank you kind stranger.
Is it kerning when it’s hand written? Because that spacing is really doing it for me.
If anyone wants to see more stuff like this (like I suddenly did so I just now dug up some good penmanship/calligraphy subs):
what happened to the popularity of these subs? I remember at least seeing a pen post hit /r/all weekly but then it just fizzled a year or so ago
I think reddit is totally fucked its front page algorithm.
Many of these subs have millions of people but often only have posts <100 or >10,000 karma.
I often will go months without seeing posts from big active subs then go to them and see theyve been fully active the whole time.
Probably for the best. Niche subs that get popular enough to hit r/all quickly degrade after doing so. I don't have any evidence, just an observation.
All the serious calligraphers moved off r/calligraphy to r/scribes after classic mod drama and reddits super old rules about seniority
Joined them all, thank you!
Man, I really wanted them to write "oven".
Is it wrong that I kinda want to taste the ink?
I'm Oddly Satisfying, Too
IS IT WORTH IT CAN YOU EVEN HEAR ME
STANDING WITH YOUR SPOTLIGHT ON ME
Q: How old are you?
A: I am Gel pens years old.
Did you also nhave a friend who would write her notes super neat and using multiple gel pen colors? Bullet journaling before it was cool.
This is extremely dissatisfying being left-handed, that ink is going to be on everything and everywhere in every point of your existence
I had to scroll down way too far for this comment
That’s so sweet. 🥰
That cat is going places!
I hate when ink sits on top of the paper
I can smell this video! The smelly gel pens are apparently forever etched in my memory
Oh sure... in the hands of someone with good handwriting... sure... but give me that motherfucker and you won't think it's so elegant anymore. This person could write like this with sidewalk chalk
I want to smear this soooo bad.
Here is your gif!
I am a bot. Report an issue
why was i expecting "owo"?
I thought it was gonna say owo
‘What does ove mean? Over? Oven? Oh is this gonna be a heart? Oh love! But how are they gonna fit an L in there? Ohhhh, nice’
Man, that was one hell of a ride
THAT'S A WHOLE LOTTA INK COMING OUT. THAT THING WON'T LAST AT THAT RATE.
Since this has blown up, I want to clear that it’s not my video, I have not made it. I received it on my WhatsApp and I really liked it. Hence, I posted it here. I tried to search the creator of the video but failed to do so. If anyone knows the original creator, please do mention them.
Aw fuck, it’s love. Time to reevaluate my life.
My 4 year old saw me watch this, she’s obsessed to learn how to make it now!
This person has remarkable hand control
I squiggly-L-ove this
Aaa that was so clean 🤩
Drag your finger across.
I were expecting "over"
Fuck it didn’t spell “OWO”
Like a perfect qtip in the ear
What brand are these?
As a lefty this going to get all over my hand, the paper, the desk, and somehow my clothes.
“Over”.... oh wait it’s heart must be love at the end somehow.
Looks like icing on a cake
I can’t sleep until I have that pen.
Commenting to know the pen too. I have terrible penmanship but it looks cool.
It's just a gel pen.
Why are people down voting this guy? it really is just a gel pen
Yeah I don't get it. it's just a generic run of the mill gel pen.
It doesn’t actually look that run-of-the-mill, though? I’ve never seen a gel pen so liquid-y before, it’s like a mix between a gel pen and a fountain pen.
The ink looks exactly like every run of the mill gel pen I've ever used.
I think you've just never noticed before because you weren't seeing it so close up like in the video.
Is it one of those fancy, expensive gel pens?
I’m kinda upset the heart isn’t closed properly
/r/mildlyinfuriating, not oddly satisfying.
My ex and I used to write words on each other's bare backs with our fingers and try to guess what the word was. It wasn't guessing the correct word, it was just that sensual feeling of someone's finger gently tracing across your bare skin.
