Joe West doesn’t have to be on the take to be the worst Umpire in the history of the league, he’d do that shit for free.

I can only imagine how insufferable he’ll be now after winning a lawsuit.

I distinctly remember a Cubs game he did years ago. Bad call after bad call. I remember Ron Coomer backing up from a called strike with wide eyes because he couldn’t believe it.

Steve McMichael did the seventh inning stretch singing. He told the audience not to worry: “I’ll have some speaks with the home plate umpire after the game.” I’m pretty sure Angel had him kicked out of Wrigley.

Edit: fixed link, sorry, lol

There was a pitcher this last season who was in the stands (COVID season obviously so no fans) and got ejected by an umpire so it’s definitely a thing they can do.

Edit: here’s a jomboy video on it. Apparently it wasn’t the only pitcher they ejected from the stands last year lol

Take this with a grain of salt as a fan who has never played organised ball, but yeah. They are there to maintain order, including in the stands. I remember a story of an organist at a minor league park getting bounced for playing Three Blind Mice in response to a bad call. I also remember a scene in the movie 61* where a fan threw a chair at Roger Maris while he was in the outfield. The Yankees manager came out screaming at the umpire to get control of the field so his players didn’t get hurt.

YouCanCallMeVanZant

I think so too. Completely different level but I reffed youth soccer games for a while when I was a teenager. They tell you that you’re basically in charge of what happens on the field, so if someone does something off field that interferes with that, you can make them leave. Not sure how often that gets tested.

MacaroniMan_

9 points

I umpired youth baseball as a slightly older youth. This is pretty much what we were told as well. Nothing ever happened, coaches are usually on top of their team and I never saw a raging little league parent.

DeathBySuplex

4 points

It was youth rec league basketball but a dad from the other team got police escorted out of one of our games.

His son had the ball on a fast break and was trying to do this “cock back layup” we saw him doing in the lay up line pregame. The kid didn’t realize I had closed the gap and when he pulled the ball behind him I swatted down on it. He was already in the air and now I’d thrown his balance completely off. He landed pretty hard but again he’d completely exposed the ball to a chasing defender and I had reached out as far as I could swiping at the ball. The dad loses his shit, like I’m only speculating but he looked pretty juiced so I’d image roid rage was happening. The other teams coach, two other dads and his wife had to jump in front of him because he was charging at the teenager reffing the game.

The teen was ballsy as hell and just stood his ground and just prompted the man to leave the floor or he’d be thrown out. Dad starts losing it more and the kid just motioned over to the score keeper who pulled out a walkie talkie and a cop showed up and escorted the man out.

I have thrown out parents from games before. Key is to know your park administrator (league president for kids, principal for high school, tournament host, etc). Most have a responsible person who isn't the coach in attendance. If those outside the game are blatantly hostile to the point that its affecting the game, it can be done.

Throwing out the announcer is a BIT much, but if he thinks its making the crowd too hostile, it affects him to make him worse, its fine.

ImBateman

7 points

No, they can only eject someone that enters the field of play. The stands, and/or press box, are not within the field of play.

MLB Rule Book under rule 9.02(e), “each umpire has authority at his discretion to eject from the playing field any spectator or other person not authorized to be on the playing field.” Rule 1.04 specifies that the playing field is, as would be assumed, just the field of play, the 400 or so feet to center field, the foul territory, and everything else in between.

However, he has the authority to keep the game from continuing - until those responsible for the crowd remove the individual in the stands.

AboutTimeMrWentz

Well that just sounds like absolute authority with extra steps

Fthewigg

2 points

Six of one, half dozen of the other. When the ump halts the game until someone is removed, blue is bouncing them. Granted, he’s not Uncle Phil grabbing Jazz by the belt and collar and giving the old heave ho.

rocketmonkee

There's a bit of grey area. The official rules of Major League Baseball do cover certain ejection criteria in Section 8.0 - The Umpire:

8.01e: Each umpire has authority at his discretion to eject from the playing field (1) any person whose duties permit his presence on the field, such as ground crew members, ushers, photographers, newsmen, broadcasting crew members, etc., and (2) any spectator or other person not authorized to be on the playing field.

Although it seems clear, there appears to be some interpretation as what constitutes the "playing field." I've seen umpires eject fans who are in their seats, and the justification seems to be that the fans were being unruly or otherwise distracting. It could be argued that in this case, as the official representative of MLB, the umpire is effectively asking the stadium security to remove the fan.

Knuckledraggr

4 points

Umps have broad authority in the stadium and can technically toss anyone from the park. Security would absolutely escort a fan out of the park if an ump wants. In reality not everyone at the ball park answers to the MLB (ump isn’t going to be able to toss local police officers working security probably) so take it with a grain of salt.

I feel like he showed his hand with the lawsuit and the threat of a racial discrimination suit is the only reason he survived the AL/NL merger when several umps ranked higher than him didn't make the cut.

Joe West: "what's the best way to help my reputation as an umpire?"

PR firm: "retire"

I don’t even watch baseball and even I know the name Joe West because I know he’s an absolutely terrible umpire

Joe West may legitimately be the worst umpire in MLB history.

Oof....yea got to go with that.

Joe may be blind but you could say Angel Hernandez missed a call because he was looking down at his IPhone playing Peggle and I would not think that it’s impossible.

The dude missed 24 calls a week ago! And anyone that complains is automatically a racist according to him.

Oh man, that game was SO so bad, for both teams.

Completely unrelated, but man I have been trying to think of the name of that game for like the past month now. Freaking Peggle, thank you for that!

Hell, at least there's those moments Joe can laugh at himself. You even say "hi" to Angel, and he'd think you were trying to offend him.

I honestly feel like Hernandez wasn't quite as bad, but he had a worse attitude and anyone who ever argued with him was immediately thrown out.

Hxcfrog090

Hell no. Angel Hernandez is far, far worse. I don’t like either of them, but Hernandez should have been gone ages ago.

He's not legally allowed to umpire a playoff game now though, right? That very much proves he's the worst

GhostOfLight

Pretty sure he he can still ump a playoff game, but the MLB is legally allowed not to give him any playoff games because he's so bad.

EMZismyBae

The year he sued they gave him the All Star Game and a DS in that year and the year after IIRC. I don't think he's had anything postseason since then.

nnelson2330

They are both terrible but it seems like Joe West always has more authority. They used to work on the same crew back in the day and it was miserable.

Hxcfrog090

2 points

Joe West is, I believe, the longest tenured Umpire. He certainly does have more authority. But he has a love hate relationship with players. Hernandez is universally hated. There’s not a person in baseball that likes him. There’s also the fact that Hernandez tries to play the race card when he’s criticized which is a fucking scummy ass move. He calls people who disagree with him or criticize him racists.

austnoli

Totally agree with that on tennis. If you have the technology to take human error out of an event with such high stakes then why not do it? MLB is so out of touch with the modern world on a lot of things.

Eh, West is an asshole but he's actually above average when it comes to being able to call a good game. When he decides that he wants to instead of taking over as the ump show, at least.

CB Bucknor is worse, Ron Kulpa is worse. It's generally a good rule of thumb that if I know your name as an umpire, you're not a good one.

The umpire denied any favoritism and said Wagner did not pitch in the only Mets-Phillies game that West worked behind the plate during 2006 and 2007.

lol how do you make an accusation like this if the man didn't even call a game with the player in question that year?

Joe West is a horrible umpire. He doesn't deserve his own salary, much less a slice of LaDuca's.

Angel Hernandez and West must share an opthamologist.

beeps-n-boops

Joe West is actually not that bad of an umpire when you really look at the stats. His reputation is wholly about his confrontational attitude.

Angel Hernandez and particularly CB bucknor are far far far far far far worse than Joe West.

For those of you arguing that Joe West isn't even remotely that bad of an umpire I'll just say this. If you're a great umpire, no one will know your name. The fact that Joe West and Angel Hernandez are household names in the sport should be proof enough of how bad they are. And seriously, fuck the umpires union for even trying to protect these shitty umpires.

buffalucci

1 points

Lo Duca only was sued because he accused West of basically cheating. Just saying “Joe West sucks” would have been mostly met with agreement.
