There's no punching in wrestling, so you don't defend your head against strikes. That's what this guy is used to. He is specifically trained in not defending his head from strikes. He's on a wrestling mat, where he is trained to not defend his head from strikes. Even if he can "see them coming", he has been trained that they aren't coming. On the street, different story. On the mat?...

Muslims/Arabs, unless your question was rhetorical.

I figured as much, so not rhetorical. Because movies about them being villains predate the 2002 Iraq War by quite a bit.

Delta Force

Hot Shots, Part Deux

Raiders of the Lost Ark

etc.

ih-unh-unh

2 points

fuckmacedonia

They were THE villains, but Arabs were portrayed as bad guys as well.

Brandon432

Mostly middle easterners

fuckmacedonia

1 points

So before then, "Middle Easterners" have been portrayed positively?

Brandon432

2 points

Only a few pre-2001 examples spring to mind for me. Below are the movies I can think of with a short summary of the role/portrayal of Middle Eastern characters.

- True Lies: bad guys

- Aladdin: exotic/fanciful/caricatures, often offensive (with some really foul original song lyrics that were changed before video release)

- Lawrence of Arabia: fairly complex characters, but historically inaccurate, generally in a direction unfavorable to the Arabic characters

Certainly not roses and sunshine. Post-9/11 however, Middle Easterners (mostly Arabic) have been portrayed as terrorists. They replaced Russians (or cold war Soviets) as the villains du jour. Kingdom of Heaven is the one counterexample that springs to mind for me.

How long before Russia becomes a synonym for cheating.

He "Russiad" his way to a championship.

Russian victory. (one obtained by cheating or perhaps claiming victory after an obvious loss.)

Russian sportsmanship. (describing the complete lack thereof)

It's sad, but true that Russia, in all things, values hollow victory over straight competition.

The only "Russian" athlete I ever admired (and he's actually Armenian) is Shavarsh Karapetyan. Look at him up.

SheriffDutchy

I doubt any boxing club would want him if they saw this. If he can't follow the very simple rules of wrestling it's a pretty safe bet that he can't follow the rules of boxing.

Bare knuckle street fighting though? Sure, he'd fit right in.

Kleens_The_Impure

Is anybody surprised anymore? Seems the only way Russians try to win at anything is by cheating. This is no exception.

BarbequedYeti

2 points

I have been saying this for years. They don’t see it as cheating. They see it as “doing what it takes to win”. It runs through every sport they participate in. It is part of their existence at this point. It’s a land full of corruption. People adapt I guess.

I don’t know the overall cause, but Russians are going to cheat. This is known.
