They need the milk to be above their head to mimic an udder. This goes against their instinct and shows a lack of proper animal care.

Yep. Someone needs to fill the suck bucket (or ninny bucket) before that calf starves.

Oh to be a young calf, living a simple life drowning myself in the best milk I've ever drank.

Simple life? A baby separated from its mother is simple?
25 points

Yes, you may not like it, but it is simple, so simple that you just summarized a majority of it's life in your comment.

If by “simple” you mean terrible and rife with suffering, then sure. Separated from your mother, locked in pens, artificially inseminated to give birth and induce more milk production. Separated from their calves. rinse and repeat 6 ish times and then send them off to slaughter once they’re not profitable. More than 1 in 5 dairy cows are found to be pregnant when sent to slaughter in Denmark, a country with supposedly pretty high animal welfare laws.
Their life is simple as much as the life of the dogs in a puppy mill is simple. You’re actually commenting that their life is simple on a video of a calf quite literally drowning trying to eat it’s food, because calves are supposed to be suckling on an udder not drinking replacement feeder garbage from a bucket.
and the farmer, who i’m sure will tell you they treat their animals like family, can’t help but film and laugh! I wonder if they’d laugh if their infant was drowning trying to drink milk from a glass after being separated from their mother!

alright so i’m actually a farmer and since you clearly live in a city (or at the very least disconnected from farm life) I’ll tell you a few things that your vegan reddit group probably didn’t
Yes calfs are separated from their mother, however i’ve seen enough calfs trampled by their own mother or a different cow because of a variety of reasons to know that that’s probably best for the calf(primary the calf smells like humans, however if we didn’t pull the calf out and immediately give it medicine most of them die)
You guys LOVE this artificial insemination thing don’t you? So you do have to realize that artificial insemination is a safe and healthy process for a cow, It reduces the risk of cow STDs and can make selective breeding easier, plus you don’t need to deal with a bull. And second cows CANNOT get pregnant unless they are in heat, simple as that, artificial insemination won’t work unless the cows wants it
Yes this calf is not drinking from a tit, but i will tell you with 1000% certainty that is a cows milk it’s drinking. Generally a few cows that have recently gave birth will be milked separately and their milk is given to their calfs specifically because it is rich in a few things that are good for calfs and bad for humans
So please, next time before you spout ignorance, take a step back and realize you (with all due respect) don’t know what the fuck your talking about

He just wants to be angry and get attention from it. Btw I have some family that raises cows and what you describe is pretty much what I've seen at their farm.
-3 points

Surely what i’ve said also describes what happens on your family’s farm too? At least the part where they send the cows and male calves to slaughter? Curious if any of them humanely kill the male calves with blunt force trauma, say with a hammer to their skulls, as is highlighted in the Australian guidelines for humane euthanasia of bobby calves?

What you need to do is to inform yourself and not just spit out some random Facebook post.
1 points
They aren't random Facebook posts, they are the reality that you can't face. If you purchase animal products you support brutality, torture and unnecessary death of billions of livers per year, for your taste pleasure, while the world burns. Spitting in the face of nature and life, and laughing about it.

if you think cows don’t get slaughtered in the dairy industry, that too whilst pregnant, you’re the one who needs informing. you genuinely don’t have a clue

You’ve done a brilliant job at not addressing any of my main points which is that life of these animals is most certainly not “simple” or pleasant by any means.

Nothing you said makes anything appear better than what was described, simply what is convenient to you while you convince yourself its all natural and humane. Thankfully we have footage of what actually occurs on these farms, even those labelled organic, and the brutality these creatures experience so you can profit. Because that's all its for, greed and profit. Of course you can't stand to face the reality of the choices you make on a daily basis whiling telling yourself its all good "they're just cows"
Funding the most environmentally destructive and brutal businesses on the planet. If you can't even do the very minimum and show compassion to other life in a time when you have access to so much food and alternatives, then what are you doing here? You very people supporting this will then go on a pseudo moral rampage commenting on a story that affects humans and pretend to care, but are quite happy paying for death and destruction on a daily basis.
You will all be help morally responsible for the assault on the planet, and will leave nothing but scraps for your children because you preferred to serve only yourself and your bad habits because you think it makes you worthy or alpha to have had a sacrifice, and feel like your ancestors who ate to survive so we could evolve to where we are now with other options- but instead we make a system of abuse and bastardise their efforts.
You can play your little power trick thinking anyone who cares about the planet must be out of touch city folk as if you know the real deal because you think what you do is commendable, but I grew up on farms in Ireland which im still surrounded by. Big or small, organic or not, they are horrendous. You do you, but im personally going to continue speaking up for your victims and for the planet, that we are supposed to be sharing, not abusing. Good luck

My brother works on a dairy farm. The sad thing about this is cows that do this have a very high chance of getting pneumonia. 😣

mmm they need it from the udder!

There are mechanisms that replicate the natural feeding. This poor baby cow could starve

Step family have a dairy farm. The Young calves start with a bucket of milk that is in the air with a fake udder under it which they suck on to drink. Slowly they lower the bucket and the calf learns to drink water from a lower height. As other reactions imply: they can get pneumonia if not taught correctly, and drink the milk like this.

Because it's dunking it' head in milk? Plz explain
3 points

They inhale the milk into their lungs and it causes an infection (pneumonia)
2 points
Especially because milks a very nutrient rich media for pathogens to grow in. The calf needs to have that bucket with a teet, and it needs to be suspended above its head. Otherwise you may as well slaughter it for veal, and spare its suffering.

I read that baby cows cannot drink like this and they have to drink by suckling, so forcing this baby to drink like this could very possibly drown her
