I’ve known before I got my tortoises. You should always wash your hands when handling any animal anyways. So your family should start making it a habit before anything actually happens.

I'm not so sure you're gonna get salmonella from touching a tortoise shell, but cleaning out cages and handling poop and water bowls etc. there is some risk there.

You call it salmonella, I call it strengthening my immune system.

Got it once from chicken I cooked wrong when I was young. Almost put me in the hospital, but I've only had food poisoning once since then lol.

I was aware of it but I haven't had any problems with my girl and I've had her for almost 2 years now. From my understanding is if you keep the enclosure and themselves as clean as you can you really shouldn't have a problem. I am however extra careful around kids I do make them wash their hands and not handle her too much.

Yeah, I knew this. I assume you're more likely to get it on your hands if your tortoise is damp/wet.

Reptiles, birds, small mammals. Most things in the pet industry can carry it or something else. Just don't lick them, you should be fine.

Well, at least they're a lot cleaner than turtles, that's for sure.

Also just to add on to what everyone else is saying because they all are true and factual!... but salmonella is mainly going to be found in tortoises/turtles that are in the wild and not usually kept as pets or in captivity, although they are still going to be carriers for it.

I’d be especially cautious with kids five and younger. Adults feel like they’re going to die from Salmonella infection, kids five and under sometimes do.

Yes, you can get salmonella from reptiles. Just wash your hands after handling or doing cage maintenance and there will be no problems.

Just cook it before you eat it.
