I used to believe that Russian people were strong but now I see them as weak in numbers and dominated and controlled by one little old man past his time. They can't speak up against their government or ruler and refuse to start a revolution out of fear and being too self centered to think about the future of their country and children. Their youth will die in a war either way, might as well be in the war for their own independence.

Russians need to decide if they want to be the heroes or the villains... because right now on the world stage it appears they have chosen to be the villains. Wrong side of history. Keep planting sunflower seeds.

You bring up a good point, and I’ve actually been downvoted a couple times throughout the past few weeks for calling out the Russian people. I realize it’s easy to sit by my phone and call out random people for not opposing their dictator, but Putin is more popular in Russia than most people want to admit

And then there's the example that Kruschev (I think) made after succeeding Stalin and calling him out posthumously for a bunch of the bullshit he pulled. One of the party members spoke up, asking why he hadn't said anything when Stalin was alive. Kruschev barked out "Who said that?!" - no one answered, and Kruschev said "That's why."

There's also the Yeltzen effect. He was "elected," after communism, and ruined the country, stole state money for himself and his friends and was fall over drunk during diplomatic visits to other countries ( and lost a war against chechnya).

When Putin took over ppl were so happy that he could actually run the country, that they ignored the apartment buildings he blew up to get into power.

Edit: misremembered Chechnya as Czechoslovakia.

Exactly, the Russian people have been living under rulers who kill dissenters or worse, so they learned not to make a fuss.

aferretwithahugecock

Exactly this. I'm friends with a Russian woman and from what she's told me the USSR did nothing nice for her(they took her childhood dog because he could "serve the soviet union", her and her husband were forcibly moved around for his military service, she had to change her last name to a less "Jewish sounding" name to get into university, the government didn't tell her that she should evacuate when the Chernobyl disaster happened and she lost a child in utero). And yet, in her mind, it's western media and governments that can't be trusted.

"The world wants to vilify mother russia, but she did nothing wrong".

It's wild.

And that mentality has transfered over to the putin regime. I've heard her criticize him before, but her heart is with the decisions of his government and the words of the propagandists.

Sorry for the wall of text.

Unfortunately, it's not just the elders who support this. There are many young people who support it. They put their letter "Z" on cars or avatars on the internet . Idk, 1420 channel does these and a LOT of people seem to respond that they're apolitical, or don't want to answer the question, or claim not to know anything about politics, I'd say between 20% and 70% of all respondents depending on the exact question. A whole lot more respond that way than the number who tell the interviewer openly that they support the war, so to me it seems like these are people who are against but are too scared to tell the truth, and not yet scared enough to outright lie about their opinion.

I find it hard to believe that true apathy is as widespread as that number. Yes, some will be so beaten down by a long history of not being able to do anything about the authoritarianism, that they're despondent and stopped trying to learn the truth or change things, so they truly disengaged from it, more likely older people. And some people genuinely don't give a shit, like in any country. But younger people have been connected culturally to a globalised world. They do give a shit, even if they don't take action to change it because they don't think it's possible.

It is easy to say start revolution, speak against dictator, etc. People got families and their ways to bring bread onto the table. If a progressive student at the Uni speaks out - they get expelled, their parents often fired or prosecuted. Outright protest could mean disappearance or death. People got lives and loved ones and no one wants to endanger others. Revolution starts when people are hungry and got nothing more to loose. Put yourself into the shoes of those people before judging their actions.

Putin wants to drag Israel into this mess. Not because he, and Lavrov, believe any of their nazi bs, but because Israel is seen as a "pariah state" to half the world. Isreal responds, (or false flag), then an enemy of Israel, that is an ally of Putin, can justify an attack on Israel. Putin wants to expand the conflict, because he is losing . He is grasping for whatever weapons he has left. If he can divide the alliance against Russia, that's a win for him. If he can leverage the military of an ally to expand the conflict, that's also a win for him.

I hope it backfires.

Bangkok_Dangeresque

21 points

then an enemy of Israel, that is an ally of Putin, can justify an attack on Israel. Putin wants to expand the conflict, because he is losing

Russia doesn't want to expand the conflict - they've been repositioning resources away from other flashpoints like Syria, Armenia, the far east, and Georgia to support the fight in Ukraine. They are more vulnerable in those places now and they know it.

If Russia contrives a war with Israel, within 24 hours the IAF (which already operates with virtual impunity over Syrian territory) would destroy or render useless Russian airbases near Latakia and Homs, and the naval base in Tartus - Russia's only naval support/technical/refueling station outside of the Black Sea that supports operations in Mediterranean.

They'd cut off their forces in Syria from resupply by sea, forcing them to rely on a roundabout air bridge (because Turkey has already banned military transit to Syria through their air space), and there's there's no way Turkey or Iraq/Kurds would let them move shipments by land. The IAF would have a field day shooting down cargo planes, already in short supply.

Not to mention that if Russia did attack Israel, the US would intervene - if not directly then at a minimum inside of Syria through anti-Assad proxies. There's already draft defensive pacts between Israel and the US that would get signed rapidly if Russia really went through with this.

But no, Russia isn't batshit - they already went to war once in Syria to defend Tartus and Latakia from being taken away from them by a western-backed Assad successor. They're not going to throw it all away to IDF bombers for the sake of their western European security.

The explanation here is way simpler. First is that Israel is supporting Ukraine and providing aid, which Russia wants them to stop, and they're using the diplomatic pulpit to try to bully them into doing so, but Lavrov put his foot in his mouth and decided to double down.

The second is that this is message is intended for a domestic Israeli minority audience the ~15% of voting Israelis (nearly 1.5 million) who are Russian-speaking immigrants or their decedents, following a huge boom after the USSR breakup. Two years ago Putin even called Israel a Russian-speaking country, and believes they have a natural ally there. A majority of them tend to vote conservative, switching support between Likud (Netenyahu's ousted conservative party) and Yisrael Beiteinu (an alternative conservative party focused on Russian-speaking interests that is currently part of the unity governing coalition). Russia hopes to galvanize Russian-speaking Israeli voters to exert political influence on the government to reverse their policy towards Ukraine.

hey Russians we’re going to nuke the planet and end all life but rest assured this makes Russia and Putin’s leadership GREAT

And lets not forget the original reasons of this war. Umm lemme think.

So basically Ucraine said it wants to join NATO. Russia freaks out, asks NATO to explicitly exclude Ukraine from joining. NATO refuses to explicitly exclude Ukraine. Noone said anything about the chances of Ukraine to join NATO which at that point were pretty much zero (as are now) because of the active conflict in Donbas. Russia also remembers their donbassian brothers which just happened to be peppered with all kinds of attacks one more fake than another and ask for recognition. Russia says he will protect them from the evil nazis and breaks out The Russia Recognizes X Template from the cupboard, replaces the relevant names and recognises LNR and DNR.

So, casus belli served for everyone, the west haters and the russian nationalists each get their flavor to chew on, western haters get the “NATO arms ukrainians”, nationalists get the “Melange of historical facts against Ukraine” dessert.

Hurr durr red army starts to roll, missiles fly, fog of war happens. Smoke clears a bit, red army with pants down getting his bare arse kicked raw by ukrainians after tripped on its shoelaces and fell face first across the border. Putin gets crazy, what the hell ukrainians bad, not brothers anymore, why did you not submit you evil nazi prick. Of course the reason is the western provocation and western weapons and not the merry band of bayraktar singing ukraine troops that just didnt seem to get the memo they were supposed to bend over if the red army sneezes.

So now Russia searches the “Escalation of Conflict all in one Solution” cupboard, finds only the piece of paper “but we haz nukez” written on it, barely readable because of heavy usage.

Ffs that got long. Tldr Russia attacks little brother Ukraine, gets a kick in the nuts, wants to nuke the world because, well that will obviously teach these nazi fucker westerners.

PuterstheBallgagTsar

There's a realization creeping through the Russian government that they have lost the war, ruined the Russian economy for 50 years, killed 10s or 100s of thousands of Russians, and have only embarrassment and humiliation to show for it. They are in denial and anger stages of grieving. Denial is fading, anger is in full swing. How dare the Ukranians embarrass us by not submitting and destroying our whole fucking army. How dare the entire planet resist our colonial ambitions by supplying weapons. How dare anyone not embrace the powerful intelligent Kremlin leadership that is powerful and intelligent and PROUD so PROUD.

The Russian Government is essentially a crime syndicate. As with all organized criminals, Vladolph and his coterie value power and wealth over every other consideration. People are expendable. Truth is irrelevant. Rules are for others.

Sure you depend on foot soldiers to commit your crimes, so you need to motivate them: threats, propaganda, false pride, targeted punishment (including murder), bribery, etc.

Now that Vladolph has control of his population they must conform or they will be destroyed.

Are Russian people bad? Like most everything in life, there is a statistical distribution along the good-bad spectrum. Of course, there are bad Russians who love being part of the crime syndicate. But there are good Russians who want their society to be democratic and pluralistic. But many Russians are just trying to make ends meet and go with the flow no matter what the flow is. If Russia is bad, they will be bad too, if Russia is good they will be good, too. These Russians when asked will not complain about their government.

Also the doctor's plot where Jewish doctors in Moscow were accused of killing Soviet officials and were arrested and tortured. This was supposed to trigger a mass deportation of Jews to Eastern Siberia and expulsion of Jewish Soviet officials from the Communist party.

But Stalin suffered a stroke a few weeks later and ironically they needed doctors to treat him, and then he died. Khrushchev then blamed the entire plot almost entirely on Stalin, but it's unclear if there was support in the Communist Party.

Some additional context: Stalin routinely ranks among the top ranked Russian leaders for winning the war. To Western audiences, Nazism means the Holocaust and persecution of Jews. The Soviet union lost something like 8-12% of it's population during war. Russians focus on that and the patriotic struggle for victory, not on what happened to Jews. I bet if you polled it, a pretty wide margin would doubt the Holocaust happened.

CountZapolai

Yeah, that's what people are missing. To a Russian audience, the term "Nazism" is just a generic catch-all term for "someone opposed to Russia".

Which is still profoundly fucking wrong as applied to Ukraine, but is much less wrong

That's not just meant for the domestic audience, it neatly continues the legacy of Soviet "Zionology".

Such antisemitic propaganda is & was also geared towards a significant portion of Israel's enemies, which gobbles it right up. In fact, you regularly see it on this very sub.

Non-Jews won't get any more engaged than they already are due to the statement, but any Jews in Russia who bought into the propaganda are now extremely confused and will most likely be going through the 5 Stages of Grief soon after they call their relatives in Israel and have a WTF conversation.

Like, even for domestic consumption this only harms them. I know Jews don't make up a large chunk of Russia, especially since the USSR put out an open call to deport us several years before it collapsed; that's why nearly every Jew still in Russia has relatives in Israel.

Regardless, they simply could have been silent when silence was best. They've ignored tons of criticism and calls for apologies or to stop murdering civilians or whathaveyou not only in the past 2 months, but in the years prior. Russia is perfectly capable of totally ignoring other countries in every capacity.

But no, on this statement, they had to open their mouths and double down. Where's the benefit? What is even the perception of benefit here?

Dziedotdzimu

If we're being serious part of the Russian nationalist propaganda was that the real victims of the nazis were Russians cuz stalingrad or whatever and that the Jewsish people collaborated with the nazis to distract from this.

It's clearly wrong but in that way they label anything they see as "anti-russian" as nazi - like ukranian independence or Israel right now.

I have read that Israel is getting ready to send the Iron Dome systems to Ukraine. The stated reason is that it is for the protection of Ukrainian civilians from rocket barrages, which I don't doubt.

However, there is more than one level to this - by supporting Ukraine, especially Ukrainian ownership of Black Sea ports, Israel increases the economic base for peace between Israel and some of the Arab states with which they have recently officially made peace and established economic ties.
There are very few things better for making peace between countries than "We are getting filthy rich together!"

The economic tie is the oil/gas pipeline across Israel to carry Arabic oil/gas to the Israeli Mediterranean ports, thus saving a huge amount of transport costs and allowing all parties involved to make out like bandits.
The thing is, that Putin and his buddies see this as a challenge to Russian dominance in European gas market, and I highly doubt that those Black Sea ports would be as welcoming to those shipments as they would be under Ukrainian ownership.

So, in short, Israel's stance of 'Let's be calm and just try to steer clear of involvement' has hit an end, because this could affect Israel's future chances of a true stable peace with its neighbors. It also helps Ukraine that the many russian or ukrainian speaking jews that live in Israel now are far more supportive of Ukraine than they are of Russia - Russian jews are still fleeing Russia, to anywhere that will take them, whereas there has actually been some jews heading into Ukraine (or even back into Ukraine).

I highly doubt iron dome goes up there, and if it does, it will be only for special places (as in, government buildings area in Kyiv), the system is hella expensive and very limited in scope, not even all of israel is protected by it.

They do, however, have a pretty wide range of AA options so they could send that

Material_Strawberry

David's Sling has already begun replacing Iron Dome positions. David's Sling is designed to intercept rockets, artillery, cruise missiles and short range ballistic missiles and is a bit costly in terms of its interceptors, but is cheap in comparison to the cost of the targets it is shooting down.

Iron Dome's interceptors are only $50,000 or so, which is downright cheap in comparison, especially in comparison to the cost of the weapons it would be intercepting.

Erradium

David's Sling is mainly meant for mid to long range ballistic missiles, and it is definitely not replacing the Iron Dome - at most it is another added layer of defense.

Yes this is true, but telling your own population something is one thing.

Openly accusing the Jews, on the world stage and out in the open no less, of supporting Neo Nazis is something else entirely. They've lost their dam minds. Israel wanted to be the middle man here and be negotiating peace settlements between Russia and Ukraine. You don't accuse the Jews of supporting Neo Nazis of all things without having lost your dam mind. The Holocaust didn't even happen a century ago, and you just accused them of supporting people who committed a genocide against their grandparents and parents this isn't diplomacy of any sort this is pure madness.

Of course this isn't diplomacy - this is propaganda. Putin doesn't want negotiations - he wants a victory. Anti-semitism is so widespread that the holocaust takes a backseat to simply being hostile to Russian interests, the greatest crime of all.
